Angela Ruth Collins
(March 11, 1977 - September
17, 2005)
Angela
Ruth Collins was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Charles and Ruth Collins on
March 11, 1977. She was her parents' miracle baby, born to them at the
golden age of 50 and 43, respectively. Angela was the youngest of eight
siblings - two big brothers and five big sisters. Angela was an aunt at
a very young age and often tried to exercise her “grown up” authority -
even though her nieces' and nephews' ages ranged from 7 years older than
her to just several years younger. Despite the initial rejection of
this “so-called“ authority, they all had a great deal of respect for
Angie as they grew older. Angela loved her family deeply. She enjoyed
spending time with her sisters and brothers and nieces and nephews. Angela gave her life to Christ at a young
age and was greatly influenced by the faith of her mother who was the
spiritual matriarch of the family. She was a proud member of The New
4Real Church with Pastor Ronald Ixaac Hubbard. She also had a special
love for Elder Birce Nash and first lady Carol Nash of People’s Church
of God In Christ who showed her so much love and encouragement. Angela was a lively individual filled
with compassion, generosity and a great sense of humor. She was always
able to encourage and uplift family and friends through her light
heartedness. Angela graduated from Collinwood High School in 1995 and
later attended Cleveland State University and Vogue Beauty Academy. She
was also employed at the Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office for several
years before her health began to fail. Angela gave birth to her
daughter Ania Denise Hankins on January 28, 1998 and affectionately
referred to her as “poopie lips”. She often spoke of the time that
Andre Hankins (Ania’s father) came around the corner of the maternity
ward (popping a wheelie) with Ania’s hospital crib overjoyed by being a
father. Angela was an avid reader she could complete an entire book in
one sitting. Two of her favorite authors were Eric Jerome Dickey and E.
Lynn Harris. In addition to her passion for reading, Angela shared an
extreme passion for shoes, pumps, boots and stilettos. She leaves
behind hundreds of shoes for her sisters to inherit. Angela leaves to cherish her memory: her
beloved daughter, Ania Hankins; beloved father, Charles L. Collins;
Andre Hankins (Ania’s father); Cynthia DeWeaver (Ania’s Grandmother);
sisters, Rosa Lee Collins (deceased), Theresa Little, Denise
Walker-Laney (Dorian C. Laney - deceased), Renee Jones, Elaine Womack

discharge. BaBa Kael - I wanted to raise the Standard of Black
Nations and defend of the flag of Black Nationalism. Combining right

to walk in and out of prison and yet could not be separated from the
love of God. Hollywood, top flight instructor AKA Best In The World,

Ruth Collins
(December 7, 1933 - December 15, 2004)
Ruth Collins was born in Cleveland, Ohio
to Frank and Ethel Barclay on December 7, 1933. Little did they know,
God would use her as a vessel to introduce the family to Christ. Ruth
cherished her mother for her wisdom and her strong will. She held dear
the memories of her mother who recently passed away. Ruth loved her family deeply. She
enjoyed spending time with her sisters and brothers and being a part of
all of their children’s lives. In 1957, Ruth married the love of her
life Charles Collins. In February of 2004 they celebrated 47 wonderful
years of marriage. Ruth was a devoted mother and homemaker who enjoyed
making her family happy and she has provided them with a lifetime of
memories to treasure and pass down from generation to generation. Ruth was a great motivator and believed
with God all things were possible. If you had a dream, she would be
your number one fan empowering you to achieve your goal. In 2002, she
became a vision partner for the Renee Jones Empowerment Center on the
Westside of Cleveland. Through her generous support, the center became
a reality and has been open for two consecutive years serving one of
Cleveland’s impoverished neighborhoods. Ruth gave her life to the Lord Jesus
Christ at the age of 23, after seeing Jesus in a dream hanging on the
cross beckoning her to come with his pierced hand. She was a dedicated
member in several churches throughout her Christian walk. In 1997, God
led her to become a member of the Peoples Church of God in Christ. She
enjoyed the love that flowed from the pastor and she absolutely adored
the first lady who she classified as the “most anointed drummer.” She
enjoyed attending service and shaking the maraca’s in the praise
service. When Ruth’s health began to fail she used
her telephone as a ministry. She was always seeking opportunities
to uplift, encourage and offer salvation to people. Ruth’s passion
was spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. Her burning desire was
that people would be saved.
James K. Conner
(October 23, 1952 - September 3, 2006)
Mary Elizabeth Conner
(August 28, 1932 - August 24, 2006)
Mary Elizabeth
Conner was born in Memphis, Tennessee on August 28, 1932, the first
of four daughters born to Lamar and Georgia Sherrod. She was married to
Tommie Conner Sr. in 1946 and the young couple moved first to
Detroit, Michigan and then in 1952 to Cleveland, Ohio where they
raised 12 children-nine daughters and three sons, all of whom
survive her. The daughters are Dr. Katherine Erwin of Atlanta, GA.;
Linda of Painesville, OH; Theresa Henderson of Las Vegas, NV;
Jacqueline Middlebrooks, Juanita Phillips, Marilyn (Gerald) Cook,
Valerie (Dennis) Brown, Sherrie and Tonya all of Cleveland, OH. The
sons are Tommie, Jr.(Lois); Charles and William Sean, all of
Cleveland, OH. A sister, Lois Keel,
is deceased. She is survived by two other sisters, Evelyn Love and
Margaret (Willis) Brady, both of Nashville, TN; seventeen
grandchildren continue the tradition of excellence Mary Conner
instilled in and demanded from them and their parents. In 1982 all of
greater Cleveland heard about the Conner family when then
Congressman Louis Stokes nominated them as the Cleveland Urban
League’s Family of the Year. This matriarch of the Conner clan was
active in the 21st Congressional District and volunteered
in the campaigns of various candidates for political office,
including those of Carl and Louis Stokes, George Forbes, Arnold
Pinkney, Stanley Tolliver and William Denihan. But her greatest
passion was for the children enrolled in the Cleveland Public
Schools. When her children were enrolled in O.W. Holmes Elementary
School, she was the chair of Clevelander’s for Quality Education
NOW, a city-wide organization. She was also a member of the group
WELCOME (West Siders, East Siders Let's Come Together) the purpose
of which was to ensure that the desegregation process in Cleveland
would be peaceful. It was a successful endeavor. Later she was a
founding member of the Cleveland School Budget Coalition, which
sought to impact the schools' budget so that most dollars would be
funneled into direct instructional costs. A close friend made
the following observation: “If every neighborhood had a Mary
Conner, the Cleveland Schools would now be integrated and dispensing
education of such quality that all would graduate with the skills
needed to succeed in college or the job market.” All who knew her
will miss her and can best honor her memory by working to advance
the causes she so ardently fought for.

Willie B. Crawford
(June 15, 1923 - October 10, 2003)
Willie B. Crawford was the first
African-American to own a carpet and tile storefront in Cleveland, Ohio.
He started Crawford Carpet & Tile (formerly Crawford Carpet) in the 3800
block of Lee Road in 1955. He began in the carpet business as an
installer and saved enough money to buy out the owner. He passed away on
Friday, October 10, 2003. Willie B. Crawford was born in Athens, Georgia
to John and Minnie Crawford. Mr. Crawford was honorably discharged from
the Army in 1946 and received two bronze stars victory medals. After
being discharged from the Army, he moved to Cleveland, Ohio. During the
1960’s, Mr. Crawford and busloads of business owners went to Columbus to
garner the support of Governor James Rhodes for the set aside bill.
Their efforts resulted in increased minority business opportunities. In
1980-81, when the 584 bill was threatened once again, he joined many
other minority contractors on a trip to Columbus to protect the set
aside bill. Along with the late Dr. Booker T. Tall and others, he was
one of the authors of the Minority Business Development Center platform
under the City of Cleveland, which was used as a model throughout the
country. The projects completed by Crawford Carpet and Tile included
major commercial and residential properties such as the Frank J. Lausche
State Office Building, Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA),
City of Cleveland, State of Ohio, United States Postal Service,
Cleveland Municipal School Board District, and various churches. Many of
his customers were homeowners as well. Many Clevelanders may know him
from his spare time activities. During the 1970’s, he organized tours to
the Bahamas Islands and cities in the U.S. and Canada. When he was not
working, he spent quality time with his family and friends. He developed
many long-term friendships through his church and the Masonic order. He
confessed Christ as a child in 1936 and was baptized in The Church of
God in Christ. His membership was later moved to East Mount Zion
Missionary Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio. Deacon Crawford was one of
the founding members of Sacrificial Missionary Baptist Church and
remained active for over 42 years. His responsibilities included
Chairperson of the Trustee Ministry and Servant Leader. He was the
Sunday School Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, and Teacher. He
most recently served as the Chairperson of the Deacon Ministry, a role
he maintained for many years. Deacon Crawford stated his favorite
scripture to be: Revelations 2:1-4: “And God shall wipe away all tears
from their eyes And there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, Nor
crying, neither shall there be any more pain; For those things are
passed away.” In preparation for a program honoring his long service to
Sacrificial Missionary Baptist Church, he was asked what was one thought
he would like to leave. This is his wish: “I would like to see more love
in our church and not so much hate. Christ said I give one more
commandment unto you … Love one another as I have loved you.” He became
a Mason in 1977 and held numerous offices in the St. Paul Lodge #131. He
was a member of the Ralph Bunche Lodge #304 upon his passing.
Illustrious Crawford served as the Grand Deputy Inspector General for
the Most Worshipful Ohio Grand Council, Inc. from 1992 until 2002. He
also belonged to all Houses of the Masonic Order and served in many
positions, such as: Member of King Shaka Consistory #5; George W. Brown
Rosa Croix #1; King Solomon House of Perfection #3 – Thrice Puissant

and made family dinners lively. His daughter, Patricia M.
Crawford-Shelby of Cleveland Heights and two granddaughters, Kimberly A.
Crawford of Rochester, New York and Shannon M. Shelby, of Cleveland
Heights, will cherish many warm thoughts and memories. He also leaves
one great-granddaughter, Mikaela I. Crawford-Neal, one great-grandson,
Michael N. Sealy, and one step-son, Stanley Stover (Valarie) and family
(Stacey Stover, Warren Powell, Phillip Smith, and Emmanuel Stover). He
was a positive father figure to many young people. His extended family
was large and included many relatives, long term companions and close
friends who loved him. Throughout the years, he lived with a goal of
creating memories to cherish during his elderly years. He enjoyed
traveling, learning, teaching and storytelling. He studied the
scriptures often. He made an effort to apply the teachings in his own
life and encouraged others to do the same. He walked tall and proud. He
had a mischievous sense of humor and sometimes played practical jokes on
his friends and loved ones. He was always on the go and many are
surprised to learn that he was 80 years old. Lately, he especially loved
to play his harmonica and watch his great-granddaughter, Mikaela, dance
to his music.
