Hattie Virginia Davis (June 22, 1940 - January 13, 2007)

Isabell Davis (January 8, 1927 - January 19, 2008)

Isabell Sims madder her debut into the world on January 8, 1927 in Birmingham, Alabama to the union of Samuel and Mattie Lou Sims. She was the sixth of eight children (five of whom preceded her in death). Dimples, as she was known by her close friends and family attended elementary school at Hudson Elementary and later graduated from Parker High School.  In 1945 at the tender age of 17, Dimples left Birmingham, Alabama, taking her young son William, to follow her mother who had departed Alabama suddenly because of racial tensions and was residing in Chicago, Illinois. It was there in Chicago in 1947, that she met and married Deward Leonard Wells, Sr. To this union three children were born, Elaine, Sharon and Deward Jr.  In 1954, Dimples packed up her family and followed her mother to Cleveland, Ohio where she settled for the remainder of her life. Arriving in Cleveland, Dimples joined Starlight Missionary Baptist Church, which was located on E. 90th and Superior Avenue at the time, under the direction of Pastor Edward Small. Dimple’s followed Pastor Small and Starlight as they grew and moved to 997 Lakeview Rd and then to their present location of 14516 Euclid Avenue. She was a devoted member there for over 50 years. She volunteered at the church, working funerals, assisting her fellow church members with the loss of their loved ones. Dimples attended Sunday school and 8:00A.M. worship regularly. She was often recognized on sight for her elaborate and bejeweled “Sunday” hates. She also served on the Flower’s Guild faithfully for 10 years.  Deward Sr., her husband, preceded her in death in 1965. Being the strong and resilient woman that she was, she continued to raise her 4 children with the assistance of her mother. In 1968 she married Eddie Davis Jr. with whom she spent the next 31 years of her life with until his passing in 1999. Of this union came Darnelle Mayson, Eddie’s nephew that they adopted and raised as their own.  Dimples worked for 19 years at Swift Cleaners, and later went on to work at the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) for 19 years before she retired in 1992. She still remained involved in RTA, attending the retiree’s luncheon monthly. This was a time for her to catch up with old co-workers and still remain abreast of the goings on within the service.  Dimples was a strong willed and determined woman who treated people they way she wanted to be treated. She was a no-nonsense type of person. However, she found deep enjoyment being around her family and friends. Dimples would often times pack her car with grandchildren, and take an impromptu trip to Chicago to see her sister Juretha Banks, or to Detroit to see her best friend Annabell Jones. The whole neighborhood would know when Dimples from Cleveland was there. Food could be smelled on the BBQ grill and music, usually Al Green or Bobby Blue Band, could be heard from the corner.  She always loved to cook for her family. A few of her specialties included: peach cobbler, pineapple cake, sweet potato pies, fried corn, and her BBQ was finger licking good. Dimple’s cooked from “scratch,” no frozen pie crust, or boxed dressing for her family. Every Thanksgiving her baby brother, Alfonzo Sims came by to pick up the goodies his sister had prepared especially for him. Because she canned and froze vegetables every year, everyone knew that if they needed some food go over to Dimples freezer.  Dimples battled long and hard, putting up the good fight. Eve on days when she really did not feel strong, she continued her activities at the Helen S. Brown Center. She liked to go and polish nails at the center because she wanted the seniors to still feel pretty and feminine even in their golden years. In her last days, Dimples went to the beauty shop, where her great-granddaughter worked to get her hair done as often as she could. She also made sure when people came to visit her that her eldest daughter Elaine was in the kitchen preparing food for her guest and Sharon her youngest daughter, was cleaning her house to her specifications. She continued her “bossy” ways until the very end.  She is precede in death by her parents, Samuel and Mattie Lou Sims, her husband, Eddie Davis Jr., her sisters WillieBell and Elnora, her brothers, James, David, and Robert, and her longtime friend Annabell Jones.  On Saturday, January 19, 2008 at 6:30 A. M. she answered God’s voice and quietly left this world. She left behind cancer, left behind pain and medicine, left behind her loss of appetite and her inability to do the things she loved and joined our Lord and Savior.  She leaves to celebrate her home-going, her sister Juretha Banks of Chicago IL, her brother Alfonzo Sims Cleveland OH, her two daughters Elaine Dennis and Sharon Wells both of Cleveland OH, her three sons William Wells and Deward Leonard Wells Jr. both of Cleveland OH, and Darnelle (Sharon) Mayson of Corona CA, in addition to her fifteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild, and an abundance of nieces, nephews, and friends.
