Prentice Jeffery
Hancock II (January 22, 1981 - June 16, 2006)
Prentice
Jeffery Hancock II woke up Friday morning June 16, 2006 and realized
that the old house he lived in since January 22, 1981 needed lots of
repairs. He could barely see out the broken windows, The roof had been
leaking and the door had fallen of its hinges. He was tired, weak and
weary, so he asked God to take him home, He told him to, "pack up and
come home." As he packed he thought of all the blessings
God had bestowed upon him, Scooter remembered his loving parents
Anjanette Jackson-Price and Wardsey Gates, and his birth place of
Cleveland, Ohio. He thought about his years in school, going on to work
at various jobs. He reflected back on being baptized at Light of Liberty
Church. Scooter smiled when he thought about his
daughters; Marciena, Ma'Shay and Shayonna Hancock: sister; Nia Gates:
aunts; Dina Black, Charisse Hancock, Sandy Gates and Wendy Gates;
grandfather: Prentice Hancock: great-grandmother: Jacqueline Duncan:
fiancee; Tameka Landon: step-fathers; Robert Price and Terry Jackson:
God-father; Michael Gilbert, other relatives and many, many friends.
Scooter was blessed with a large family which he loved dearly, family
was very dear to his heart. Scooter prayed that they would all
understand that it wasn't that he didn't love them, he was just ready to
go home. So Friday morning Scooter slipped out of the house unnoticed,
put his luggage in the taxi, told the driver to take him to the banks of
the Jordan River. He booked passage on the shop of Zion because someone
told him awhile ago that it would take him all the way home. Scooter
boarded the ship and the Captain took one look and waved him on. He
didn't need a ticket, because he purchases his ticket a long time ago,
when he walked down the aisle at Light of Liberty, and promised God that
he would be faithful until death. He settled back
in his seat and must have fallen asleep, for he awakened with a start,
realizing the ship had landed, and waiting at the door to greet him with
open arms was Jesus Christ, his grandmothers; Janet Hancock and Eva
Gates and many others who had gone on. Scooter was home at last. He had
a pleasant journey.

During this time, he joined the Evelyn Freeman Band, which played
for teenage dances at Oster’s Ballroom on East 55th
Street and Euclid. In 1942, the Freeman band was recruited by the
U.S. Navy to join the U.S. Naval Band during WWII. This was
important recognition because at that time there were no African
Americans serving in a professional capacity in the U.S. Navy.
Although he was one of the youngest members in the band, Cliff
decided not to join until he had graduated from Central High
School. On July 10, 1943,
after receiving his high school diploma, Cliff entered the U.S. Navy
and became a member of the Naval Band. Additionally, during his
tour of duty he earned the American Theatre Ribbon as well as the
Victory Ribbon. After receiving an Honorable Discharge on May 10,
1946, Cliff joined the U.S. Army National Guard of Ohio 122nd

Catholic Church for many years and Cliff was a member of the St.
Aloysius Men’s Club. In addition, for a brief period at Father
Paul’s request, Cliff accompanied the church choir on piano during
services. Cliff, who had
attended Fenn College for two years, gained employment with the U.S.
Postal Service. He was a Postal Clerk at the Main Post Office and
retired from there after thirty-five years of service. In February of 2003,
Cliff received alumni recognition at “The Great Lakes Experience”
ceremonies held in Chicago, Illinois at the Great Lakes Naval base
for being one of 5,000 African-American bandsmen who changed the
face of the Navy and who made an impact on military history. This
legacy is documented through the Center for Black Music Research at
Columbia College. As an avid chess
player, Cliff taught his sons to play at an early age. He was known
for his devotion to family, his love of music, his gentleness, his
wisdom, love of people and his quiet sense of humor. As a family
man, he encouraged a tradition of hard work, integrity and family
honor. On Wednesday, August

Foster Horton
(July 20, 1948 –
November 23, 2005)
Foster Horton was 57 when he departed this
life on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 in answer to the Master’s call
after a brief illness at home and Huron Road Hospital of Cleveland,
Ohio. Foster Horton was born to the union of
Willie Parum Horton and Gertrude Smith on July 20, 1948 in Goggins,
Georgia. His father, Willie (1983), and his mother, Gertrude (2003),
preceded him in death. During his illness, Foster continued to pray
through his illness with great strength and courage, and he faced his
illness with a smile knowing that he would later be in the care of the
one who loves us all. Foster was a graduate of Glenville Senior
High School, and he was trained as a welder and fence layer in
Cleveland, Ohio. He was employed at Bradley Metals before he became
disabled. As a youth, Foster enjoyed horseback riding, roller skating
and automobiles. Foster fulfilled one of God’s great commandments in
the Bible:
“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all
thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the
first and greatest commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou
shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” (Matthew 22:37-39),
and with his prayer
“… my soul magnifies the Lord; be lifted up, for the
mighty God has done great things for all of you. Be of good spirits,
love, and harmony and remember the word of the LORD; He will restore,
keep and bless you all the days upon this earth …”
Foster was blessed with the love of Cydne
Horton Thomas with whom he shared his life for more than 27 years. To
their joy, their son, CorDaryle Horton, was born. Foster was a devoted
father to CorDaryle Horton, Tameakan R. (Norman) Peak, Johnny Jahmal
Staples, Shaquitta Staples (Winston Salem, NC) and Jimmie of
California. Foster loved his beloved children and his loving fourteen
grandchildren. Foster’s life was filled with love, joy and care from
his grandchildren, sisters Betty Jean Horton, Angela Louise Horton, and
Barbara (Richard) Lorraine Looney, brothers Willie P. (Wanda Sue)
Horton, Jr. of Sweeney, Texas, and Johnny and Eddie James Horton of
Cleveland, Ohio. Although we don’t understand why things
happen as they do, we must have faith that in time God will give us the
answers. Foster accepted the Lord as his personal Savior. Because of
his relationship Him, Foster will not have to labor in sickness or
pain. Everyday will be a day of thanksgiving as he dwells in the house
of the Lord. There he will enjoy everlasting life and rejoice in the
great reunion with all of God’s children. Foster leaves to cherish his memory Cydne,
CorDaryle, Johnny, Tameakan R., Shaquitta, fourteen grandchildren, three
sisters, three brothers, three stepdaughters, a host of aunts, nieces,
nephews, cousins and loving friends. We love you, Papa Foster, and we will truly
miss you. Your legacy of love will never be forgotten.

work schedule and declining health in 1998, he had to give up the
sport. Harold was a
very proud and private man...never letting his right hand know what
his left hand was doing and few people knew of his struggle with
prostate cancer. Upon meeting
Harold, you either liked or disliked him immediately, for he had
such an arrogant way about himself. The timid found his forceful
personality just a little bit intimidating. But those who liked him
and took the time to know him, grew to love him. Harold
reaffirmed his faith in Jesus in 1998 and renewed his membership
with Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church. Harold went
to be with the Lord on August 11, 2004 with loved ones at his side.
Family members who preceded him in death include son, Antoine Hurry,
and sister, Faye Hocker. Harold
leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Sherlean Hurry of Euclid,
Ohio; daughter, Misty Hall; mother, Ruby Hocker, father, Henry
