Emiyah Mack Taylor (September 23, 2007)

On September 23, 2007 at 9:03pm Emiyah Samuel’leah Mack-Taylor was born to Shontia Mack and Eddie Taylor, Jr. and at 9:38pm she went home to be with the Lord.  Emiyah leaves to mourn her passing, her parents; grandparents Maureen Ross, Classie Inkton and Eddie Taylor, Sr.; great-grandparents Marcia Scott, Oliver Scott, Bessie Inkton, Herman Inkton, Sr., Mezteh Taylor, James and Maeleen Taylor; six aunts; seven uncles; godmother Brittney Brigtzer; and a host of family and friends.
 

Hollie G. Mackey, Jr. (August 28, 1933 - February 21, 2005)

Hollie G. Mackey, Jr. was born in Temple, Texas on August 28, 1933 to the late Hollie and Mary Mackey.  Hollie accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized in Temple, Texas.  He was also educated in the Temple School System and graduated from Dunbar High School in 1951.  In 1955, he entered the United States Navy and was subsequently honorably discharged in 1958.  Hollie later moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1959.  In Cleveland, he worked for the White Motor Corporation on East 79th Street until the company went out of business and closed the plant.  He also worked at various other companies, including Van Dorn and Kransy Kaplyn.  Hollie also became a member of Greater New Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.  Hollie married Rosetta Fellows on July 13, 1962 and to this union four children were born - Stephana Mackey of San Diego, California, Andrea and Mercedes Mackey of Cleveland, Ohio and Lynda Mackey of Fort Mills, South Carolina.  On February 21, 2005 at 6:30 a.m. Hollie was called to his home.  Preceding him in death are his parents and one brother, Fred Powers.  He leaves to cherish his memories a loving wife, Rosetta;  dear daughters, Stephana, Andrea, Lynda and Mercedes (Loren Burgess);  three grandsons, Perris Mackey, Bryan Nwafor and Daylon Burgess;  one sister, Mary Cathey of Los Angeles, California; one sister-in-law;  one brother-in-law;  one niece; four nephews; a host of cousins in Texas and in Illinois; as well as best friends Nathaniel Robinson, Earl Hopkins, Sr., Richard Gray, "Big" Hollis and Oliver Lewis.

 

John Paul Macon (April 6, 1949 - February 26, 2007)

John Paul Macon was born on April 6, 1949 in Cleveland, Ohio and was the fifth child born to the union of Millard and Lillian (nee Fields) Macon.  As a young man, John moved with his family to New York where he received his formal education.  On April 11, 1969, John entered the United States Air Force where he served until receiving an Honorable Discharge on October 8, 1970.  After leaving military service, John attended Youngstown State University and later received an Associates Degree in Business Administration from Cuyahoga Community College.  Over the years, John was employed in a variety of areas.  He had worked at Youngstown Sheet & Tube, was a paralegal for HUD’s Tenant Association, worked with the Navy Finance Department, and was an independent real estate agent and travel agent.  More recently, he was employed as a Claims Adjustor for Medical Mutual of Ohio until his health began to fail.  In 1975, he joined Everlasting Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Moses Leroy Smith.  He was an active member of the church and served on the Trustee Board and sang in the choir.  John had also been an active member of the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Ohio - El Hasa Temple #28 where he was a 33rd Degree Mason and Past Potentate.  Also in 1975, John married Ada McCloud and to their union two children were born – Maurice Andre Macon and Andraia LaVon Macon.  On February 26, 2007, after a long period of illness, John departed this life.  He is preceded in death by his father, Millard Macon, as well as by siblings David Fields, Willie Macon, and James Morris.  Those left to mourn and to cherish his memory include soulmate Ada Macon;  children Maurice (Myra) Macon who is currently serving in the U.S. Navy and stationed in Washington State and Andraia Macon of Willoughby, Ohio;  mother, Lillian Macon of Cleveland, Ohio;  siblings Loretta Dawson of Birmingham, Alabama, Narcissus Smith of Manchester, New Jersey, William “Winkey” Morris of Cleveland, Ohio, Virginia Smith of Cleveland, Ohio, Phyllis Macon of Cleveland, Ohio, and Gary Macon of Cleveland, Ohio;  one grandchild, Cameron Macon;  a cousin, Doris Jean Griggs, who was like a sister to him;  an uncle, Bernard (June) Fields, who helped raise him and was like a father;  as well as other loving relatives and friends.

 

Florrie Majors (October 16, 1921 -  December 21, 2005)

Florrie Majors was born on October 16, 1921 in Lexington, Georgia to the union of George and Anna Jackson Majors.  At a young age, Florrie met and married Hamp Belle, Sr. who has preceded her in death.  To this union, nine children were born.  In the mid-1940’s, the family moved north to Cleveland, Ohio in search of a better life.  Here, she gained employment with a uniform and towel supplier.  Florrie accepted Christ into her life at an early age and in later years began Jehovah Witness studies.  She was a quiet and reserved woman who was very family-centered.  She became more social over the years and joined a seniors group where she had an opportunity to go on various trips.  Florrie also loved her cats - which at last count included eleven indoors and thirty-seven outdoors!  On Wednesday, December 21, 2005, Florrie departed this life.  She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Anna; one son, Isaiah Belle;  as well as by all of her siblings, George, Jr., Jimmie, Clarence, Estelle, Minnie and Anna.  Those left to mourn and to cherish her memories include children Hana Shakir, Hamp Belle, Jr. – Fareed, Louise Scott, Nathaniel Belle, David (Joy) Belle, Clarence Belle, Gloria Belle Ivory and James Belle;  twenty-eight grandchildren; great-grandchildren; as well as a host of other loving relatives and friends.

 

Garnet Major (January 24, 1915 - April 6, 2006)

Garnet Major, who was born on January 24, 1915 in Lansing, Ohio, was one of 8 children born to the union of Matthew and Mary (nee Leveit) Calloway.  While living in this household, she was educated at local schools and accepted Christ at an early age.  As a young lady, she moved to Wheeling, West Virginia in search of a better way of life.  While there, she met and married Hance Prayear and their family grew to include three children.  In the early 1950's, she and her children moved to Cleveland, Ohio.  While here, she met and married Willie Major who preceded her in death in the early 1980's.  Garnet worked for many, many years as a sales clerk for a popular wig shop located on 4th and Prospect in Downtown Cleveland.  She also joined Greater Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church where she served as an active member until her health began to fail.  In prior years, she was also an active Eastern Star member.  Garnet was an outgoing woman who was strong-minded, opinionated, and sometimes stubborn.  She was a very well-dressed woman who took pride in the investments she made in her fine-quality clothes and shoes.  She came out of a period of time where everyday was something to dress up for!  On Thursday, April 6, 2006 she departed this life.  She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, all three of her children - Shirley Prayear, Robert Prayear, and James Prayear, Sr., six of her siblings and one grandchild.  Those left to mourn and cherish her memory include her grandchildren, Robert (Zee) Prayear, Jr., Raymond Prayear, James (Pamela) Prayear, Jr., Angela Bryant (Miles) Perry, and Jacqueline Willis; one sister, Edith; 18 great-grandchildren and the legacy continues with great-great grandchildren and other loving relatives.

 

Richard D. Mallett (June 7, 1963 - January 27, 2008)

Richard Darin Mallett was born on June 7, 1963 in Cleveland, Ohio to James Richberg and Lela Mallett.  On Sunday January 27, 2008, Richard departed this life and is preceded in death by his father, James Richberg.  Those left to mourn and to cherish his memories include his children, Darin Mallett, Niken McDade, Marilyn McDade, Brandy Coleman, Alexander, Jvonte Boykin, and Ari Green; mother, Lela Mims; sisters, Cynthia Mallett of Cleveland, Ohio and Deborah L. Mallett (Kip) Coleman of Marietta, Georgia; brothers, Eric Lamont Mallett and Tracy Mallett, both of Cleveland, Ohio; uncles, Luther Bridge Mallett of California, Wiley Mallett of Mississippi, and Jerry Mallett of Cleveland, Ohio; one aunt, Jean Allen Mallett Lampin of Mississippi; other loving relatives and friends.

 

Carolyn Ann Malone (October 11, 1952 - November 7, 2007)

Ann Malone was born on October 11, 1952 in Terre Haute, Indiana to the union of Leon Malone and Ruth Petty and she received her education in the Indiana School System.  Carolyn was a very loving person who was fun to be around.  She demanded respect and in the same token showed everyone compassion and understanding.  Living life to the fullest and being around family and friends was what she enjoyed the most.  During her retirement she spent time with her children and her soul mate Howard Jackson, Sr.  On November 7, 2007 at 7:10p.m., Carolyn Ann Malone departed this life at Euclid Hospital.  Those who have preceded her in death include her parents and her brother Leon Malone, Jr.  Those left behind to cherish her memory include her two daughters – Stacey Lynn (Vincent) Woods of Cleveland, Ohio and Tonya Denise (Lee) Cleveland of Redlands, California; son, Ronald Decarlo Whetstone of Euclid, Ohio; stepfather, Rev. Gerald Russell of Terre Haute, Indiana; soul mate of six years, Howard Jackson, Sr. of Euclid, Ohio; sister, Shauna K. (John) Williams of Arlington, Texas; stepson, Howard L. Jackson, Jr.; three nephews – Deon (Vonetta Harris) Malone of Euclid, Ohio, Pierre Cullpepper of Arlington, Texas, and Michael Malone; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

Betty Jo Marshall (February 27, 1934 - January 11, 2007)

Betty Jo Marshall was born on February 27, 1934 in Charleston, West Virginia to the union of Joseph Henry and Eva O. (nee Hayden) Young.  She accepted Christ into her life at a young age and was educated in Charleston where she graduated from Garnet High School.  In the early 1950’s, the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio where Betty Jo met and married Thomas J. Marshall in 1953.  To their union, three children were born – Ervino, Brenda and Kelly.  While in Cleveland, Betty Jo affiliated herself with Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church.  In addition, for more than thirty years, she worked in the food service industry spending much of that time within college settings.  For the past eleven years, however, she worked at Hillside Plaza Nursing Home and, until her recent passing, was their Dietary Supervisor.   Betty Jo, who was a very family oriented individual that believed in taking care of family and friends, was an excellent cook and had her own catering business.  Her home – “Big Mamma’s House” – was always the center of activity.  Her holiday feasts and that special lasagna will surely be missed!  On Thursday January 11, 2007, Betty Jo entered into eternal rest.  Those that have preceded her in death include her father Joseph Young;  a sister, Margaret Ann “Tina” Young;  and her former spouse who she remained good friends with, Thomas J. Marshall.  Those left to mourn and to cherish her memories include her children, Ervino Marshall, Brenda Moore and Kelly Marshall, all of Cleveland, Ohio;  their brother, J.C. (Brenda) Munford;  her mother, Eva O. Young of Cleveland, Ohio;  siblings, Donna Young (Steve) Acy and Orlando Young, both of Cleveland, Ohio;  four grandchildren, Nicole, Lavelle, Rachel, and Kaylyn;  two great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Kobe;  one brother-in-law, Roy Marshall;  five sisters-in-law, Helen McElvaine, Marguerite Hibbler, Erma Lee Womack, Geneva Marshall and Janet Young;  best friend, Willa Strickland;  and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

 

Walter Marshall Jr.

Walter Marshall, Jr. was born on September 17, 1921 in Little Rock, Arkansas to Walter and Alberta Marshall.  He graduated high school in North Little Rock, Arkansas.  Walter married the love of his life, Luella Pouncy, in 1942 and to their union six children where born.  He joined the United States Army in 1948 and toured many states before he was honorably discharged in 1951.  In 1955, Walter and Luella decided to make Cleveland, Ohio their permanent home.  He worked for Ford Motor Company for many years as a foundry worker.  Those who have preceded Walter in death include his parents Walter and Alberta Marshall; his loving wife Luella; daughter Kathy Marshall; son Walter Marshall III; sister Irene Moore; and brother Thomas Marshall.  Walter leaves to cherish his memories four daughters, Helen Savage, Beverly (Eugene) Houston, Patricia Dean-El and Shereece (Titus) Marshall; two sons, Michael Marshall and Nathaniel (Tonya) Marshall;  three sisters, Charlene Marshall of Chicago, Illinois, Alberta Husband of Florida and Alma Marshall of Little Rock, Arkansas;  extended family member Kathy Copeland;  fourteen grandchildren;  nine great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends.

 

Leslie A. Martin (December 10, 1968 - March 26, 2007)

 

Ronald Harrison Martin (July 20, 1967 - May 11, 2007)

Ronald Harrison Martin was born Friday, July 28, 1967, in Painesville, Ohio, to the late Garv Allen Martin, Sr and Louvenia Jeffries Martin. He departed this world on Friday, May 11, 2007.  He attended Cleveland Public Schools, and was a 1985 graduate of East High School. He was awarded a full scholarship to attend Ashland College in Ashland, Ohio.  He found Christ as a youth, and also studied the Koran and the teachings of The Nation of Islam.  He married his beloved wife, Tyia Louise Cunningham, on July 22, 1995. To this union, one child was born, Kayla Kadijah Martin. and he accepted Candiance Lee as his own daughter.  He was baptized at and was an active member of New Hope Baptist Church, where he served as a member of the Trustee Board, the Usher Board, and was a Sunday School Teacher. He also worked with the youth and was on the Scholarship Committee.  He completed his studies at Moody Bible Institute.  He was employed in the shipping and receiving department at Avery Dennison, Painesville. Ohio.  He leaves to mourn his children Roneisha Martin and Ronald Martin, Jr., both of Cleveland, Ohio; Kayla Martin and Candiance Lee, both of Painesville, Ohio; Mother, Louvenia Martin, of Cleveland, Ohio; siblings, Gary Allen (Charlene) Martin, Jr., of South Euclid; James (Amber) Martin, of Painesyille, Ohio; Heather Martin, of Mentor, Ohio; Darryl (Stephen) Dobrzeniecki, of Florida; Elizabeth (Bryant) Helton, of Cleveland, Ohio; grandchild, Delvonte Allen, Jr. of Painesville, Ohio; and a great host of relatives and friends.  He leaves this world to join his departed loved ones, Father Gary Allen Martin, Sr., Grandmother, Willie Bell Jeffries, Grandfather, Isaac Harrison Martin, Grandmother, Dorothy Martin, and his Beloved Wife, Tyia Louise Martin.

 

Rev. William Martin (October 4, 1966 - May 18, 2007)

Born in Cleveland, Ohio October 4, 1966 to the union of Rose and Bill Martin (deceased), William was a very outgoing and happy person that loved and was full of life.  Growing up, William attended Cleveland Public schools and graduated from Collinwood High School.  As an adult he worked as a Machine Operator at Skill Tool and Die company; he was also the best handyman one could expect.  William gave his life to Christ at an early age and was later ordained as a Minister.  Known as Uncle Funny by his nieces and nephews he was always the life of the party and guaranteed to make you laugh. On May 18, 2007, he departed this life with us.  William leaves in his loving memory, Rose Martin (preceded in death), Bill Martin (preceded in death),  Stepmother Mattie (preceded in death);  loving wife Pamela Martin;  three children, sons William and Jordon Martin, and one daughter Amber Cook;  five sisters, Charlesetta Scott (preceded in death), Joyce Martin, Denise Williams, Vanessa Williams (preceded in death) and Kim Williams;  four brothers, Melvin Williams of Daytona Beach, FL, Fredrick Williams and Michael Martin;  a Godmother Mrs. Gloria Walford, whom he held near and dear to his heart;  five step brothers, Dewight, Ronnie (preceded in death), Bruce, Bernard and Felix and a host of nieces and nephews, friends and family.  William was loved by all and will be missed by many.

 

Beulah Mason (August 3, 1916 - July 9, 2004)

Beulah Mason was born on August 3, 1916 in Greensboro, Alabama to the union of Joe and Lula Thornton Walker, both of whom have preceded her in death.   Mrs. Mason's siblings, Josephine Walker, Marie Walker Bell, Carrie Thornton, Rebecca Walker, Frank Walker, John Walker and Christopher Walker, have also all preceded her in death.  Mrs. Mason was educated in the Tuscaloosa, Alabama school system and accepted Christ at an early age while living in Alabama.  After moving to Cleveland, Ohio some thirty to forty years ago, she fellowshipped with Temple Baptist Church.  While in Cleveland, Mrs. Mason met and married James Mason, who has preceded her in death, and was occupied as a private housekeeper.  She was known to be very personable and fun loving.  During the latter years of her life, she was a resident at the Candlewood Park Healthcare nursing facility.  She leaves to mourn her passing and to cherish her memories, one daughter, Mary Catherine Bell of Tuscaloosa, Alabama;  nieces, Pearl Edwards of Cleveland, Ohio and Lucille Smith of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; and a host of other great nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

Bertha S. Maxville (February 13, 1932 - September 6, 2006)

Bertha S. Maxville, beloved daughter of Eva Mae Davis, entered into eternal rest at home on Tuesday, September 6, 2006.  Bertha was born on February 13, 1932 to the late Johnny Sabb and Eva Mae Whiley in Columbia, South Carolina.  At an early age, Bertha came to Cleveland and attended local schools.  She graduated from John Hay High School.  She later pursued a career in Social Work for the Cuyahoga Welfare Services after graduating from Kent State University.  She truly enjoyed her work in serving the community which she did for over 50 years.  Bertha enjoyed a very brief retirement before her illness and passing.  Bertha accepted Christ at an early age and was a living example that Christ was in her life.  Her mother and family were the joys of her life.  She always enjoyed family gatherings and bringing joy to her many cousins and other family members.  Bertha was a people person who knew no strangers.  She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory:  her devoted mother, Eva Mae Davis;  her aunts, Georgia L. Porter and Bernice Ward, both of Cleveland, Ohio;  and numerous cousins and treasured friends.  She leaves a legacy of love and sharing and she will always be in our hearts.

 

Odessia M. Maye (April 19, 1921 - March 15, 2008)

Odessia M. Maye was born on April 19, 1921 to the union of George and Julia (nee Jones) Felton in Scooba, Mississippi where she received her early education.  As a young woman, Odessia moved to Alabama where she accepted Christ into her life and became a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Cedar Grove, Alabama.   Odessia enjoyed traveling around the country. Her travels eventually led her to Cleveland, Ohio which she ultimately made her home. While in Cleveland, she met and married Willie Doss Maye in 1959.  Odessia was an outgoing, lively, outspoken and very caring woman who had joined Shepherd Inspirational Missionary Baptist Church here in Cleveland. She loved listening to good gospel music and spending quality time with her grandchildren. Odessia also enjoyed a good game of bingo. Her pound cake, bread pudding, sweet potato pie and fried corn will surely be missed by all!  On Saturday March 15, 2008, Odessia departed this life. She is preceded in death by her parents; by her husband; by one brother, D.P.; by three sisters, Fannie, Ezell, and Beatrice; by and one grandchild, Rickey.  Those left to mourn and to cherish her memories include her daughter, Ossie Dale; brother, George (Emma) Lockett; goddaughter, Eloise Alford; seven grandchildren, Claudia (Demetrius) who Odessia raised from the age of six weeks, Debbie, Dessia (Alan), John Jr., Doniella (Antoine aka "Quan"), Melvin and Michael; nineteen great-grandchildren; thirteen great-great grandchildren; as well as other loving relatives and friends.

 

Robert Newton McAlpine (May 17, 1932 - November 10, 2004)

Robert Newton McAlpine was born to the union of Ivy Newton McAlpine and Essie Strit McAlpine on May 17, 1932 in Cleveland, Ohio.  "Bob" or "Bobby", as he was affectionately known, was educated in the Cleveland Public School System.  On April 30, 1952, just before his twentieth birthday, he entered the United States Army.  During his tour of duty, he earned a National Defense Service Medal and, on September 9, 1954, was honorably discharged.  Bob, who worked for the Greater Cleveland Rapid Transit Authority as a driver for many years, was full of life!  He was a fun loving man with a million-dollar smile, a deep raspy voice, and wet kisses!  He loved his family.  He also loved to eat, listen to jazz, watch wildlife and history shows on television and greet family and friends with "Um Gowa"!  He will surely be missed.  Those left to mourn and cherish his memories include children, Robert McAlpine, William McAlpine, Adele "Vicky" Austin, Leota Smith, Michael McAlpine, Michele McAlpine, Karen "Tiny" McAlpine, Eugene Johnson, Stacey Allen, Rosemary "Cookie" Anglen, Kim Stevens, Linda Pannell, Larry Williford and Deborah Williford;  siblings, Emma McAlpine and Ivy Gilbert, both of Chicago, Illinois, Julia McAlpine and Douglas McAlpine, both of Cleveland, Ohio;  twenty-six (26) grandchildren;  ten (10) great-grandchildren;  and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

 

Dorothy Elizabeth McBryde (December 18, 1946 - January 28, 2005)

Dorothy Elizabeth McBryde was born December 18, 1946 to Quincy Lee and Jeweline Solomon in Oakwood, Freestone County, Texas in the Lone Star Community.  Dorothy’s father preceded her in death.  On July 3, 1980 she married James Edward McBryde.  To this union two children were born:  James Quincy and Jeremy Solomon McBryde.  She also has a stepson, Eric De’Loach.  Dorothy became a member of Lone Star Baptist Church at an early age.  She was active in all the church services.  She attended high school at Butler High School and graduated with top honors in 1964.  She received a BS degree in Biology from Wiley College, Marshall, Texas.  While at Wiley College, Dorothy was on the Dean’s list and was named Miss Wiley in 1968.  She pledged and became a member of Alpha Iota Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.  She completed courses at Prairie View A&M University and went on to receive her Masters Degree in Education from Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio.  Dorothy came to Cleveland in 1968 and worked as a summer Camp Director for Cleveland Council of Campfire Girls.  Dorothy went on to become a very well known and creative Science teacher in the Cleveland Heights/University Heights school system in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and retired after 35 years of service.  Dorothy was extremely well respected in the teaching community and had a strong impact on the lives of her students.  Dorothy was known to lead the charge on ensuring her students received a quality education and was quick to tell her students with hard work and perseverance, “You can be whatever you want to be”.  Dorothy loved to sing and was a key member of the Wings Over Jordan Celebration Chorus.  She was also heavily involved with various political activities and a strong union advocate. Dorothy was also an active member of National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE), Heights Alliance of Black School Educators (HABSE) and was a member of the scholarship fund raising committee.  Dorothy was also the head of Future Teachers of America.  Dorothy was also one of the founding members of African American Manufacturing, Inc., makers of Clear Quencher Bottled Water, and will be sorely missed by her partners, Ethel Dickerson and Cassandra Buxton.  Dorothy became a founding member of Trinity Methodist Church at 17115 Miles Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio.  She served as Choir Director, a Youth Coordinator and was a member of the church council.  Dorothy headed up many fund raising activities for the church.  She reaffirmed her faith in Christ and departed this life and God called her home to heaven on Friday, January 28, 2005.  Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory:  her loving mother, Jeweline Solomon; a devoted husband, James E. McBryde; two sons, James Quincy and Jeremy Solomon McBryde and a stepson, Eric De’Loach and wife Bridgett of Las Vegas Nevada; grandchildren, Jaylen Quincy McBryde, Brandon (Ean) De’Loach and David Austin; two sisters, Barbara Allen of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Ethel Dickerson of Shaker Heights, Ohio; one brother, Lieutenant General (retired) Billy K. Solomon and wife Cathyrn of Gainesville, Virginia; and a host of many relatives and many special friends.

 

Bennie W. McClain (March 13, 1926 - November 28, 2006)

Bennie W. McClain was born on March 13, 1926 in Florence, Alabama.  He parents, Ernest and Lucinda (nee Patton) McClain, and sisters Mary Elizabeth, Alberta and Margaret, have all preceded him in death.  On July 8, 1944, Bennie entered the United States Army where he earned several commendations and was Honorably Discharged on August 5, 1946.  In search of better opportunities, Bennie moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1953 where he gained employment at Columbia Vise.  On July 29, 1955, Bennie and Cora Ingram were united in matrimony and to their union three children were born – Janice, Toni and Tammy.   Bennie was a family oriented man.  He traveled with family and friends and hosted a number of parties in Cleveland as well as at the family’s summer home in Lisbon, Ohio.  He loved to be the center of attention and was a practical jokester.  He was very honest and outspoken regardless of whether or not it hurt your feelings.  Bennie enjoyed fishing, gardening, barbecuing, various carpentry and handy work projects.  Even after his retirement from Columbia Vise in 1988, he continued to work part time until failing health prevented him from doing so.  Bennie’s all-time favorite activity, however, was sneaking off going to eat with any one of his many grandchildren!    Bennie was the perfect example of what a real man and a father should be.  Those left to cherish his precious memories include is loving wife Cora who he spoiled every chance he got;  beautiful daughters, Janice Rogers, Toni (Duron) Freney and Tammy (Marvin) Rollins;  sisters, Ernestine Chambers, Rosa Lee Kelly, Laurene Collier and Willie Grace Johnson;  grandchildren, Mary Rogers, Michael Rogers, Corinne Rogers, Sabrina Freney, Tierra McClain and Felisa Freney;  ten great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren;  nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends.

 

Alphonso McCloud (October 11, 1958 - June 2, 2006)

Alphonso McCloud, who was born on October 11, 1958 in Cleveland, Ohio, was the fifth of seven children born to Shelly and Sarah McCloud.  Alphonso attended the Cleveland Public Schools.  At an early age, he accepted Christ and united with Everlasting Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend M. L. Smith.  For many years, he was employed at Executive Caterers.  Al was the proud father of two loving children - Stephanie Bagley and Alphonso McCloud Harris.  His greatest joy was being with his children and family.  He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed socializing with friends.  On June 2, 2006, he answered his call to death and is preceded by his father.  Those left to cherish his memory include his mother, Mrs. Sarah McCloud;  his daughter, Stephanie Bagley, and his son, Alphonso McCloud Harris;  four sisters, Ada McCloud Macon, Ella Marie, Sarah Francis, and Sandra;  two brothers, Larry Donnell and Malvin (Yvette), all of Cleveland, Ohio;  close cousins David Williams and Darlene Lawrence; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.

 

Sha-Nea McCloud Duncan (April 5m 1978 - March 19, 2007

Sha-Nea was born on April 5, 1978 to Jennifer McCloud Duncan and Dwayne S. Duncan in Cleveland, Ohio.  She was the youngest of two children born to this union.  Sha-Nea graduated from Shaker Heights High School in 1996 and it had been her goal to become a physician.  She was a warm and sweet person who met no strangers.  She loved the world and trusted everyone.  Sha-Nea loved reading and shopping and spending time with her niece and nephews - Pony, Mave, Madison and Max.  She was like a second mom to them and would say that these were her kids!  Hanging out with her big sister, special cousins Jazz and Maria, other family members and friends, brought joy to Sha-Nea.  Her walking down the street, jazzy with her high heel shoes, will surely be missed by all!  On Monday, March 19, 2007, God quietly whispered to Sha-Nea, “Peace Be Thine”.  She is preceded in death by her grandmother, Barbara L. Thornton.  Those left to mourn and to cherish her memory include a loving and devoted mother Jennifer Duncan;  father Dwayne (Brenda) Duncan;  her one and only loving and devoted sister, Tawana L. Duncan (Myron) Wilson;  grandmother Queen E. Duncan;  three loving and caring nephews, Myron III, Maverick L. and Maximus L. Wilson; a very special niece, Madison L. Wilson;  three uncles, George Duncan, Jr., Gregory (Laura) Thornton and Darryl McCloud;  two aunts, Pam Tate and Kathleen McCloud;  a special friend she loved dearly, Ian Edward McGhee;  other loving relatives and friends. 

 

Marci'a C. McConnell (March 18, 1958 - April 17, 2007)

Marci’a Chastean McConnell (nee Adams) was born on March 18, 1958 in Cleveland, Ohio to the union of Henry Arthur and Hattie Jean (nee Bunkley) Adams.  Marci’a, who was a member of Union Avenue Christian Missionary Alliance Church, received her education at Lutheran East High School and Cuyahoga Community College.  She worked for twelve years at Medical Mutual of Ohio and she also worked as a travel agent.  Marci’a suffered from the ravages of a chronic disease for over thirty years  She was often uncomfortable and suffered with severe pain.  She seldom complained, instead she tried to live a normal life and was an inspiration to all of those around her.  On Tuesday April 17, 2007, Marci’a entered into eternal rest and joins both of her parents who preceded her.  Those left to mourn and to cherish her memories include her loving husband, William;  dear sister, Pamela Adams;  niece, Freska;  aunt, Chastean Grierson;  cousins; other loving relatives and friends.

 

Clement Pate McCraney (August 2, 1942 - January 7, 2007)

Clement Pate McCraney was born on August 2, 1942 in Cleveland, Ohio to the union of Pate and Lucille (nee Clements) McCraney.  At an early age, Clement confessed Christ at St. John A.M.E. Church.  He attended the Cleveland Public School System and graduated from Glenville High School.  Clement later attended Lakeland College.  On July 2, 1964, Clement joined the United States Army and received an Honorable Discharge on June 21, 1966.  After being discharged from the Army, he was employed at TRW for twenty-six years until retirement.  He also held many other jobs after retirement.  Clement later met Sandra Cooper and was joined in Holy Matrimony August 8, 1981.  This union reared six children – Diane, who preceded him in death, Robert, Kenyatta, Terista, Millicent and LeShawnia.  Clement enjoyed his life to the fullest over the years.  He enjoyed bowling, softball and traveling with his Van Club, “The Chosen Few”, where he was known as “Capt. Easy”.  Whether he participated or just enjoyed watching on TV, sports was his favorite activity.   Clement truly loved and enjoyed his family, making many sacrifices to provide for them.  On January 7, 2007, he departed his life at the Louis Stokes V.A. Medical Center and is preceded in death by his parents.  He leaves to cherish many great memories Sandra McCraney;  his children Robert, Kenyatta (Anita), Terista (Wililie), Millicent and Le’Shawnia (Jovan);  nineteen grandchildren;  ten great-grandchildren;  a very dear cousin David Rogers;  and a very special companion Gloria McIntyre.

 

Nathaniel McCrary, Sr. (October 27, 1923 - October 20, 2004)

Nathaniel McCrary was born on October 27, 1923 in Atlanta, Georgia to the union of Eldridge and Adelle McCrary.  After the passing of his mother, Nathaniel was raised by his aunt Eddie Clyde Riley and grandmother Eliza Mathews in Butler, Georgia where he subsequently graduated from the Butler Colored High School.  In 1943, Nathaniel joined the United States Navy.  He served as a Seaman, first class, and earned Asiatic-Pacific, Victory, American Area, and Philippine Liberation medals.  On February 18, 1946, Nathaniel was honorably discharged.  After later settling in Cleveland, Ohio, Nathaniel worked for Willard Storage Battery for nearly twenty years.  He later became employed at University Hospitals of Cleveland.  It was here that he met and fell in love with Carolyn Williams and on August 7, 1970 the two were married.  In 1988, Nathaniel retired from University Hospital as a Facilities Engineer and remained active with the hospital's Quarter Century Club.  Nathaniel, who was baptized at Mt. Gillion Baptist Church in Cleveland, was a very sociable person and could be described as a missionary as a result of his helpful ways with people.  Because he was mechanically inclined, he could often be found performing handyman work, fixing cars or providing transportation for others.  On Wednesday, October 20, 2004, Nathaniel entered into rest in Cleveland, Ohio at Hospice of the Western Reserve surrounded by family.  He is preceded in death by his parents, aunt Eddie Clyde, grandmother Eliza and grandchild Sonia.  Those left to mourn and to cherish his memories include wife, Carolyn;  children, Daniel Davis, Deborah Eason McCrary and Nathaniel (Darshel) McCrary, all of Cleveland, Ohio;  nine grandchildren;  six great-grandchildren;  aunt Pauline Mathews of Cleveland, Ohio;  uncle Calvin J. Mathews of Butler, Georgia;  and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives and friends.

 

Beverly Ann McCurdy (March 19, 1955 - February 12, 2004)

Beverly Ann McCurdy was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Beverly Benjamin and Mildred Roshell on March 19, 1955.  She was the youngest of three children.  Her father preceded Beverly in death.  Beverly attended Cleveland Public Schools graduating from Glenville Senior High in June 1973.  On June 18, 1977 Beverly Roshell and Joe McCurdy were married.  Beverly was a loving and devoted mother of three children - Ameerah (Alfonzo Hawthorne), Joe, III and Mathew Lawrence.  Beverly was baptized at an early age at Everlasting Baptist Church under the late Rev. Leroy Smith.  She previously served as teacher and secretary of the Sunday School.  Beverly was a very kind hearted person always greeting you with a smile - to know her was to love her.  She was a hard worker.  Beverly was employed at the Cleveland Board of Education from 1990 to 1994.  From 1995 to present she was employed by the Spiral Binding Company.  Beverly leaves to cherish her memory:  her loving and devoted mother, Mildren Roshell;  three cherished children, Ameerah, Joe, III, and Mathew Lawrence.  Beverly adored her only grandchild Ameerah who she affectionately called "Stinky".  She will also be lovingly missed by her brother, Sherman (Bobbie Ann);  sister Rita Mathau;  three aunts, Theda Nichols, Pecola Roshell and Pearl Hunter;  uncle, William Anderson;  five nieces;  sister in Christ, Mamie Blaney;  and a host of other relatives and friends.

 

Andrew McDonald (December 30, 1955 - May 25, 2007)

Andrew “Blu” McDonald was born on December 30, 1955 to the late Douglas and Nettie Lee (nee Lowery) McDonald.  Blu departed this life on May 25, 2007 at Candlewood Nursing Home. He is preceded in death by two brothers -  Cleveland and Sylvester McDonald, and four sisters - Aurilla Minter, Jeanette Perkins, Curtis and Zenobia McDonald.  Blu, who accepted Christ at an early age, moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1971 with his parents and siblings and attended Glenville High school.  He was a jack of all trades when it came to employment.  He worked as an Exterior Decorator for the North Cultural Center for many years, as a Chef at Pacers, The Yacht Club and Hopkins Airport and he was a Carpenter with McBride and Associates and various other companies. Blu was a true friend to many.  He will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.  He leaves to cherish his memory three sons, Sante and Andrew L. McDonald by Leona, and Curtis Hickman by   Linda;  one daughter, Shandrea Sherman by Leona;  three granddaughters, Santesia, Sachanna and Takaria;  two sisters, Catherine McDonald of Mobile, Alabama and Jean Carter of Selma, Alabama;  seven brothers, Ardean Lowery, Samuel (Christine), James, John, LaBaron (Annette) McDonald of Cleveland, Ohio and Nathaniel and Stanley McDonald of Mobile, Alabama;  two sisters-in-law, Jeanette Jones and Eddiemae Freeman;  one brother-in-law, Roy Minter;  and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends.

 

James McDuffie (October 9, 1934 - December 7, 2007)

James McDuffie was born on October 9, 1934 in Tampa, Florida to the union of Rev. Ezekiel and Brinie Mae McDuffie.  James accepted Christ at an early age and lived a life that was pleasing to God.  He attended public school in Tampa and graduated from Don Thompson High School.  He attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia and graduated with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration.  In 1968, James moved to Cleveland, Ohio with his family and was a member of Christ Temple for almost forty years.  James was a lover of life and had a loving and giving spirit.  He was full of life and energy and always left everyone with a special word.   James retired from University School as the Director of Maintenance after many years of service.  On December 7, 2007, James departed this life at Kindred Hospital.   Those left to mourn and to cherish his memory include a loving and devoted wife Jean who he was married to for forty-four years; sons Darryll, James Jr., and Michael;  daughters Michelle, Sandra, Sylvia, and Mona;  eight grandchildren;  other relatives and a host of friends.

Mary McGrady (October 1, 1923 - November 18, 2007)

Mary McGrady, who was born in Troy, Alabama to the loving relationship of Garfield McGrady and Rachel Lawson, was the oldest of thirteen children.  Mary was educated at East Academy High School in Troy, Alabama where she met Lillie Owens who became her best friend for over sixty years.  During the early 1940’s, Mary moved to Detroit, Michigan.  In the late 1950’s, Mary moved to Cleveland, Ohio where she was employed as a Nurse’s Assistant at City Hospital (now known as MetroHealth Medical Center) until her retirement in the 1980’s.  Mary was baptized at an early age in Troy, Alabama and later in life attended Jehovah’s Witnesses services.  Mary was “Auntie Mary” or “Miss Mary” to a lot of people.  She was a strong-willed and determined woman who treated people the way she wanted to be treated.  She was blessed by God to live a long and full life.   Mary suddenly became ill and was admitted to Euclid Hospital.  On Sunday November 18, 2007, Mary departed this life.  She is preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers, one sister, one nephew – Terry, as well as by her special and dear friend Lillie Owens.  Those left to mourn and to cherish her memories include her special sister Susie (Willie) Coleman of Cleveland, Ohio, as well as sisters Mattie, Alberta, Mary Emma, Vivian and one brother Willie Albert, all of Troy, Alabama; sister-in-law Anna McGrady of Troy, Alabama;  her special nieces Betty, Cheryl, Carol and Diana;  nephews George and Donald;  and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, other loving relatives and friends.

 

James Otis McHaney (November 13, 1946 - June 18, 2004)

James Otis McHaney, also known to others as Bunny & School Boy, was born on November 13, 1946 to the late Mary McHaney and J. Will Pearson in Lexington, Tennessee.  James graduated from Montgomery High School in 1965 and on May 25, 1965 joined the United States Air Force.  He was initially stationed at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California, subsequently served in Vietnam and ended his service in 1967.  Upon leaving the service, he came to Cleveland where he resided until his death.  James was employed by Ford Motor Company in Brookpark, Ohio and was later employed at First Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church as a custodian.  He went on to be employed by Precision Metal Smiths until he was laid off in 2001.  At the time of his passing, he was an employee of Tenable Security Company.  At an early age Mr. McHaney confessed his hope, belief and his joy of the Lord at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church under the guidance of Rev. J.L. Burkley.  In 1984 he became a faithful steward and was a trustee of the First Zion Baptist Church under the guidance of Pastor Henry Charles.  He leaves to mourn his companion and friend of six years, Sandra Hammonds;  four siblings, Fred (Martha) Neal, Argentra (Paul) Wadley, LaWanda Lowe, and Terence McClerkin;  fifteen nieces and nephews, eighteen great-nieces and nephews, and two great- great-nieces and nephews and a host of family and friends.

 

Howard Lee McIntosh (August 29, 1941 - January 30, 2007)

Howard Lee “Mac” McIntosh was born on August 29, 1941 in Detroit, Michigan to the union of Alonzo and Louise (nee Arnold) McIntosh.  When Howard was seven, his family moved to Tuskegee, Alabama where he attended school.  When Howard was eighteen, he moved back to Detroit for a brief period of time and then to Cleveland, Ohio where he found employment.  For thirty-five years, Howard was a truck driver and had been a member of the Teamster’s Union.  He and his wife Wilma (nee Lewis), who he met through a mutual friend and married on November 11, 1964, were blessed with two children.   Howard was a very family oriented person who was not only a father to his children, but, was also a father-figure to many others.  He was a kind and generous man who met no strangers.  He loved to laugh and to make others laugh as well.  He also enjoyed fishing and gardening – indoors and out – and he prided himself on his vegetables and flowers.   Howard was also a pretty good cook and his barbeques, fish fries and family dinners will surely be missed!  On January 30, 2007, Howard departed this life.  He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Wilma, and sisters Lowell Humphrey and Mary Louise Arnold.  Those left to mourn and to cherish his memories include one son, Sekou Malik Shumba (fka Howard Jr.) and one daughter, Sheila McIntosh, both of Cleveland, OH;  a brother, Alonzo McIntosh of Detroit, MI;  sisters, Catherine Foster of East Cleveland, OH and Evelyn McIntosh of Bedford, OH;  grandchildren, Aziza Shumba and Sakile Shumba, both of Cleveland, OH;  brothers-in-law, Leroy Lewis, Horace Lewis, Hakeem (Crystal) Lewis, and Timothy Lewis;  sisters-in-law, Barbara Lewis, Lisa (James) Moss and Malika Lewis;  a special cousin and sister-in-spirit, Yvonne McIntosh;  other loving relatives and friends.

 

Wilma McIntosh (July 22, 1944 - June 27, 2006)

Wilma Carolyn McIntosh was born on July 22, 1944 in Cleveland, Ohio to the union of Leroy and Willie Virginia (nee Moore) Lewis.  Carolyn, as she was affectionately known, accepted Christ into her life at an early age.  She was also educated in the Cleveland Public School System and graduated from John Hay High School.  As a young woman, Carolyn was introduced by a mutual friend to Howard McIntosh.  After their courtship, the two were united in Holy Matrimony on November 23, 1964 and to their union two children were born.  Carolyn’s life revolved around her family.  She was a quiet woman and a good listener.  Although she was a person of few words, her words were full of impact, sound advice and wisdom.  Carolyn will truly be missed.  On Tuesday June 27, 2006, Carolyn departed this life and is preceded in death by her parents.  Those left to mourn and to cherish her memories include her husband of more than forty years, Howard;  two children, Sekou-Malik Shumba (fka Howard Jr.) and Sheila McIntosh;  seven siblings, Leroy Lewis, Jr., Barbara Lewis, Horace Lewis, Hakeem (Crystal) Lewis, Timothy Lewis, Lisa Lewis (James) Moss and Malika Lewis;  two grandchildren, Aziza Shumba and Sakile Shumba;  a "special sister", Yvonne McIntosh;  and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends.

Jake McKinney (June 6, 1946 - September 18, 2007)

Jake “Bobby” McKinney was born on June 6, 1946 to Ellen and John Henry Pringle, in Birmingham, AL.  He moved to Cleveland, OH in the early 60s.  Jake met and married his loving wife of 38 years, Betty Oglesby on December 21, 1968.  God whispered in his ear and called him home on September 18, 2007.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson Javon McKinney.  Jake was an avid Cleveland Browns and Tiger Woods fan who shared his love of sports with his brother, Leroy and his son-in-law, Wes.  He had a smile on his face after he got to see the Browns have a truly successful game the Sunday before he passed.  The only thing that surpassed his love of sports was his love of family.  He was a kind and gentle man who was extremely supportive and fiercely protective of his family.  Even though his children lived far away, he went out of his way to make sure that he stayed close to them in spirit.  Anyone who ever talked to Jake knew how he felt about his family.  Jake worked at the GE Pitney Glass facility for more than 10 years.  He had been employed at International Paper for the last 20 years.  During his time here on earth, he developed many lifelong friendships both inside and outside of work.  His smile and witty sense of humor will not be forgotten!  Jake is survived by a cherished wife, Betty; daughter, Nichelle (Wes) Young; son JaMarvel (Cherese) McKinney; brother Leroy Williams; six grandchildren: Ferando Green, Amber Young, Cierra McKinney, Justice Young, Jordan Young and Jaleil McKinney; cousin, Marvin McKinney; mother-in-law, Roxie Oglesby; as well as an abundance of aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, family and friends who will commit to memory the times they have shared with Jake.

Maria A. McMahan (November 11, 1946 - November 17, 2006)

MARIA A. MCMAHAN, WAS BORN November 11, 1946 to Emmanuel and Myrtle Ealom in Paducah, Kentucky.  Maria, attended school in Kentucky until her family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, when she was twelve years old. She graduated from High School here in Cleveland.  She accepted Christ at an early age, joining Triedstone Baptist Church in Kentucky, and was a living example that Christ was in her life.  Maria met and fell in love with Mr. George McMahan and to this union four children were born, Malcolm, Tamara, Tekerne and Edward; and later married Mr. James Hollimon, Jr., who preceded her in death. And to that union one child was born, James Hollimon.  Her family and friends were the joys of her life.  Mommy was always feeding the neighborhood.  All of my friends called her mommy.  Most of my friends have stayed at her house at one time or another.  If I ever had a problem needed a recipe, if something happened to the kids and I didn’t know what to do, I asked mommy.  Who will I ask now? She always knew what to say.  What to do.  She would also say whatever was on her mind; she would say “anything”!  Everyone loved and respected her.  She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory:  her devoted children, James Holliman, Malcolm McMahan, Tamara McMahan, Tekerne McMahan and Edward McMahan. One brother Frankie Moore and one sister Rossneau Ealom and a host of nieces and nephews.

 

Bryant D. McPherson Sr. (December 24, 1947 - September 3, 2006)

Bryant Douglas McPherson Sr., proud son of the late Robert & Clara Chandler and the late Leroy & Sarah (McPherson) Wallace, was born on December 24, 1947 in Cleveland, Ohio.  He graduated from Glenville High School and joined the United States Air Force immediately after graduation.  He was stationed in Phoenix, Arizona.  While there, he met his loving wife Margaret Hardeman.  They were joined in marriage on June 21, 1968 and celebrated 39 years of marriage this year.  To this union were born five children.  Bryant accepted Christ at an early age.  He attended Glenville Church of God under the leadership of Pastor Cochran.  Bryant joined Blessed Hope Missionary Baptist Church on May 9, 1989 and was ordained as a Deacon on April 12, 1991.  Bryant loved talking about his church and challenging people to study the word of God.   He as a dedicated Sunday school teacher & Bible Study teacher for over 15 years.  He loved gospel music and was a member of the Male and Gospel Choruses where he sang bass with his buddies Deacon Page and Pastor Perkins.  He also loved being the Overseer of a number of auxiliaries at the church, his latest auxiliary being Blessed Hope Newspaper Committee.  He loved that auxiliary and in his last days, he still questioned what was going on and asked how everybody was doing.  Bryant was a very successful salesman in his professional career working a J.C. Penney’s and Sears most recently.  He also was an insurance agent for a number of years.  In time, his physical illnesses forced him into an early retirement, but illness did not stop his commitment to his church and family.  Bryant enjoyed singing, playing the keyboard, fishing and playing board games with his family, especially Chess and Monopoly.  He currently still holds the belt for chess in the family, but the Monopoly belt is currently held by his son-in-law, Rodney Sr.  Bryant was a pillar for our family and will be greatly missed, but, praised be to God, we know that we will see him again.  Bryant was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, U.L. Barbara Miller (March 30, 1934 - January 21, 2008)

Mrs. Barbara Jean Miller was born March 30, 1934 in Springfield, Ohio to the union of John Jacob and Emma Hibbitt and was the eldest of eight children.  When she was a young child, her family moved to Cleveland, Ohio where she graduated from the Cleveland Public School System.  Barbara was united in holy matrimony to Lawrence Miller on June 28, 1952 and to this union six children where born.  Barbara continued her pursuit for knowledge and enrolled in Jane Adams Nursing Program to become a License Practical Nurse.  After graduating from the program, she gained employment with Mount Sinai Hospital and retired after rendering twenty-five years of dedicated service.  Shortly after retirement, Barbara endeavored to learn as much as she could about Jehovah God and his son Jesus Christ.  Her cherished moments were spent with her mother, brothers, sister, children and grandchildren on family trips and reunions.  After an extended illness, Barbara departed this life on January 21, 2008.  She is preceded in death by her father, John Jacob Hibbitt;  daughter, Carla Johnson;  son, Ricardo “Ricky” Miller;  sister, Marlene Calhoun;  and brother, James “Jimmy” Hibbitt.  Those left to cherish her memory include her mother Emma Hibbitt;  three daughters, Karen (Robert) Jackson, Ladena (DaVaughn) Davis and Sheila Poole;  one son, Courtney Miller;  two sisters, Carol Hibbitt and Arlene (Joe) Johnson;  three brothers, John Spring, Ronald (Frankie) Hibbitt and Michael (Sharon) Hibbitt;  thirteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren;  brother-in-law, Roger Calhoun;  son-in-law, Sylvester Johnson;  nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives and friends.

 

John H. Miller, Jr. (August 7, 1939 - February 3, 2005)

John Miller, Jr. was born on August 7, 1939 to John Sr. and Lula J. Miller in Birmingham, Alabama.  The family migrated to Cleveland, Ohio.  John attended East High School where he graduated at an early age and joined the U.S. Marine Corp. where he was baptized into the Catholic faith.  John was honorably discharged on January 13, 1958.  John was united in holy matrimony on August 19, 1961 to Harriet Ann Drake.  From this union two sons were born.  John drove for the Cleveland Transit System (CTS) for many years.  John drove for Hostess Cake (Wonder Bread) for 30 years.  After his retirement from Hostess, he drove a tour bus for Southeastern Trails for four years until he went to his heavenly home on February 3, 2005.  He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Ann;  two sons, Marcellus and Michael;  a daughter-in-law, Stephanie;  his father and stepmother, John Sr. and Alice;  his mother and stepfather, Lula J. Jones and Henry of Milwaukee, Wisconsin;  two sisters, Odessa Miller of Chicago, Illinois, and Angela Hill of Euclid, Ohio;  one grandson, Brandon;  one granddaughter, Kalene;  two nephews and a host of relatives and friends.

 

John Henry Miller, Sr. (February 23, 1919 - April 11, 2005)

John H. Miller, Sr. was born on February 23, 1919 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where he was raised and educated.   In 1956, John moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he gained employment.  In 1978, he married the former Alice R. Spencer.  John was employed as a security guard for Barger Metals for a number of years before his retirement in 1982.  On April 11, 2005 he departed this life and is preceded in death by his parents and son, John H. Miller, Jr.  Those left to mourn and to cherish his memory include his loving wife Alice;  two daughters, Odessa and Angela;  daughter-in-law, Ann;  four stepdaughters, Glenda (Jerome), Barbara (Mervin), Saundra (Chris), and Vastoria;  one stepson, David;  mother-in-law, Gussie Spencer;  two sisters-in-law, Ester Spencer-Phillips and Sophia Ronny (William, Sr.);  three brothers-in-law, David Spencer, Theodore Spencer and James Spencer (Charlene);  twenty-two grandchildren;  twenty-two great-grandchildren;  four great-great-grandchildren;  and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

 

Myrtle A. Miller (November 10, 1950 - February 1, 2008)

Myrtle Ann Brown Miller was born a fraternal twin in Meridian, Mississippi on November 10, 1950 to Calvin and Fannie Brown.  Myrtle professed Christ and was baptized at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church by Reverend William Murphy in 1957 and later attended Charity Baptist Church under the Reverend S. S. Neal. As an adult, she became a member of Maranatha Christian Fellowship under the leadership of Pastor Gene Morris. It was then that she received full understanding and embraced Christ as her Lord and Savior. Myrtle served there as church secretary for several years until her health began to decline.  Myrtle attended schools in Cleveland, Ohio and graduated from Glenville High School in January of 1969. She worked and retired from Ameritech (Ohio Bell Telephone Co.) after more than twenty-five years.  Myrtle found strength in the study of her Bible and listening to songs of praise. She was very fond of making pottery and various types of ceramic crafts. Myrtle’s greatest attribute was a heart of gold. She was giving, selfless, devoted and loving to her entire family.  Myrtle leaves to cherish her memories, loving parents, Reverend Calvin and Mrs. Fannie Brown; brother Jessie J. Brown (Gwenyth) of Pasadena, California; sisters, Merle A. Perkins (her twin), Norma J. Wagner (Lawrence), Carolyn E. Evans, Victoria R. Brown of Cleveland, Ohio and special brother, Dr. Melvin T. Jones (Sallie). She leaves many uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

 

Leslie Constantine Mills (April 7, 1916 - November 3, 2005)

On April 7, 1916, Leslie Constantine Mills was born to Benjamin and Laura Mills in Linstead, St. Catherine, Jamaica.  Leslie was the second oldest of four children: George Sr., Percival and Linda.  Leslie fathered two sons, Prince and Roy, whom he loved dearly.  In 1946, Leslie migrated to Cleveland, Ohio where he became a United States citizen.  He was a dedicated employee for 35 years at The Penn Central Railroad Station, as a Mail Handler.  After retirement, he frequently took Adult Classes and was very proud of his Auto Mechanics Certificate.  He was the Treasurer of the Cleveland West Indian Cricket Club.  He also was a dedicated member of the B&M Shoe Corp.  Leslie lived a quiet and independent life, and he enjoyed going to the spa, and he loved to travel.  Leslie accepted Christ at an early age.  He was a faithful member of the Windermere United Methodist Church where he served on the United Methodist Men's Board.  On Thursday, November 3, 2005, Leslie was called home to be with the Lord.  He was preceded in death by parents, Benjamin and Laura Mills, and one brother, George (Anna ) Mills, Sr.  He leaves to cherish his memories two sons, Prince Houlton of Atlanta, Georgia and Roy Hudson of Cleveland, OH; four grandchildren, Martina, Mikayla, Jacquel and Royanna, all of Cleveland, Ohio; one brother, Percival (Louise) Mills of Chicago, IL, and one sister, Linda Ferguson of Canada.  Leslie also leaves to mourn an array of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

 

Rufus Mitchell, Jr. (December 24, 1928 - October 19, 2005)

Rufus Mitchell, Jr. was born on December 24, 1928 to the union of Rufus and Julia Mitchell in Albany, Georgia.  It was here, and at an early age, that he confessed his hope in Christ.  After the passing of his parents, Rufus moved to Butler, Pennsylvania.  After a short stay with his aunt and uncle, he entered the U.S. Army in January of 1946 and served three tours of duty in World War II and the Korean War.  He received the Army of Occupation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and a Purple Heart.  In April of 1954, he was Honorably Discharged.  For more than forty years, Rufus was employed by the Federal Government at several Veterans Hospitals.  During this time period, he worked in Veterans Hospitals in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Brecksville, Ohio and in Cleveland, Ohio.  As a Nursing Technician, Rufus loved his work and took much pride in it - gaining the respect of his co-workers.  In 1998, and after receiving more than twenty awards of recognition for superior and outstanding performance, Rufus retired from the Veterans Administration system.  Retirement allowed him more time to enjoy sporting activities, which included bowling on several teams.  On Wednesday, October 19, 2005, Rufus departed this life.  Those family members who have preceded him in death include his parents, sisters - Evelyn and Mattie, and grandchild - Gary.  Those left to mourn and to cherish his memories include a devoted wife, Eula (nee Norfleet), whom he met and married in 1972;  five children, Thomas (Barbara) Mitchell and Darlene (Ziggy) Mitchell, both of Butler, Pennsylvania, Vanessa (Theodore) Parker of Orange Park, Florida, as well as Kim Jackson and Micah (Diane) Mitchell, both of Cleveland, Ohio;  one sister, Luvenia Morgan of Cleveland, Ohio;  grandchildren, Tyronne, Edward, T'eona and T'eron;  five great-grandchildren;  one aunt and one nephew;  a host of cousins and other loving relatives;  many friends;  as well as a special friend, Royal Burwell, who has assisted the family on a continuous basis throughout Rufus' illness.

 

Walter Mixon (November 13, 1932 - October 18, 2007)

Walter Mixon was born on November 13, 1932 in Selma, Alabama to the loving union of John and Dora (nee Hicks) Mixon.  As a young child, Walter moved with his family to Cleveland, Ohio where he received his education.  In 1953, Walter met Arlear Norfleet through her sister and in 1955 the couple was joined in holy matrimony.  To their union, one child - Walter Jr., was born.  Walter was an outgoing and sociable man who had many friends.  He loved fishing and most sporting activities.  Walter attended barber college and worked for many years in this family trade under his older brother.  He eventually opened his own barber shop.  Later in life, Walter had worked for Ferro Corporation for a number of years.  On Thursday October 18, 2007, Walter departed this life.  Those who have preceded him in death include his parents;  siblings, Randolph Mixon, George Mixon, Mary Persons, Howard Rogers, David Mixon, and Edward Mixon.  Those left to mourn his passing and to cherish his memories include his wife, Arlear;  son, Walter Jr., sisters, Augusta Dexter and Dannie Mae Coleman;  four grandchildren;  several nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives and friends.

 

Lester Montford Jr. (September 13, 1924 - July 20, 2007)

Lester Montford, Jr. was born on September 13, 1924 in Macon, Georgia to the union of Lester and Maude Bell (nee Howard) Montford. While in Georgia, Lester accepted Christ into his life and received his early school education.  On May 1, 1944, Lester enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served as a Steward’s Mate First Class. On May 8, 1946 in Great Lakes, Illinois he was honorably discharged.  After his time served in the Navy, Lester moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he met Frances Daniels at an social event. The couple was later joined in Holy Matrimony on June 4, 1956.  Lester became a member of the National Grand Orient of Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Masons – Lodge St. Paul – 131. In addition, after many devoted years working in the construction industry he retired from the Ohio Operating Engineers Local 18 in 1985.  Lester enjoyed working in the yard and building things around the house. He took pleasure in socializing with family and friends be it by having or attending a barbeque or a party. Family was very important to him and he loved to be at home. Even though Lester was a lively person at most times, he had times where he would be quiet and wanted his private time in his private area of the home known as “the hole”.  At 11:37am on July 20, 2007, Lester departed this life. He is preceded in death by his parents as well as by siblings Bessie Mae Evans, Leslie Montford, Johnnyjames Clayton and Eugene “Cowboy” Clayton.  Those who are left to mourn and to cherish his memory include his loving wife Frances; stepdaughter, Eleanor Brooks; one sister, Johnnie Mae (Raynell) Kelly of Cleveland, Ohio; one brother, Abdul-Majid (Jamila) Hasan (f.k.a. Preston Montford) of New Jersey; sister-in-law, Sandra Montford; grandchildren Tamaia, Michael and Jahmal; great-grandchildren Brianna, Aaron and Edwynn; nieces and nephews, Heather, Simone, Reggie, Terry, Andre, Shaun, Brian, Beyyinah, Halim, and Khalil; cousins Elaine Flowers, Theotis Flowers, Zenobie Bell, Donald Bell, Tiffany Bell, Bryon Hazely, Magdeline Hazely, Bruce Hazely, Eva Mae Wesley and Mae Eva Wesley of Atlanta; one aunt Katie Fortune of Milwaukee; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Richard C. Moore (June 5, 1928 - May 23, 2006)

Richard Clarence Moore was born June 5, 1928 in Seale, Alabama.  He was the son of the late William H. and Lilly Moore.  He was raised in Columbus, Georgia in a big family consisting of five sisters and three brothers.  Earning a football scholarship, he had the opportunity to attend Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina.  His experience there allowed him to fulfill his curiosity in chemistry.  After spending time in Boston, Massachusetts, Richard relocated to Cleveland, Ohio in 1954.  Employed as an electronic technician for 32 years, Richard retired from The Veterans Administration Hospital in 1984.  Richard also managed his own successful business in television repair.  Richard married his college sweetheart, Ruby L. White, on June 29, 1954.  From this beautiful union, Richard and Ruby had two children and had a wonderful marriage of 52 years.  Richard found love in dedicating his life to Jehovah.  He was baptized in the summer of 1999.  At Glenville Congregation he served faithfully as a ministerial servant.  Finding joy in preaching about Jehovah and the promise of a paradise earth, Richard spoke these words to others until his death.  He was preceded in death by his three sisters, Annie Reese, Tommie Fisher, Lillian Leonard, and two brothers, William F. Moore and James Moore.  Richard is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Ruby L. Moore; his daughter Wynolia (Cherry) Randle; his son, Anthony W. Moore; his grandchildren Jocelyn C. Randle and Kevin B. Randle; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and over 6 million friends.

Rebecca Morgan (September 26, 1908 - February 26, 2005)

Rebecca Morgan was born September 26, 1908 to the parents of William and Susie Asberry in Montgomery County, Alabama.  Rebecca, who was the wife of the late James Morgan, departed this life on Saturday, February 26, 2005.  She leaves to cherish her memories, a devoted son, James Morgan Jr. (Betty) of Cleveland;  two grandchildren, Sharon (Delano) Scott of South Carolina and Calvin of Cleveland;  one sister-in-law, Julia Asberry;  a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

 

Richard Easton Morgan (October 30, 1946 - March 13, 2005)

Many people look upon death as a sad occasion but the death of a Christian is a glorious time, for our Lord and Savior, has said so and the Psalmist in Psalm 116:15 says, "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saint."  We have gathered here together today to mourn the passing of Richard Easton Morgan. He was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, October 30, 1946 to the late Samuel Easton and Louise Lewis Morgan.  Richard was educated in the Waynesboro Public Schools.  He was a construction worker for a period of time in Maryland.  And moved to Cleveland with the family in 1985 where he met and married his loving wife Pearl, October 2,1994.  Richard was employed at Cleveland Metropolitan Housing Authority for five years until he became ill and was no longer able to work.  Richard joined Greater New Calvary in 1995, where he served on Usher Board #1.  Richard departed this life on Sunday, March 13,2005.  He leaves behind to cherish his memory: his caring wife Pearl, his devoted aunt, Vallie Lewis of Cleveland, Ohio; two sisters, Sue Morgan of Cleveland, Ohio and Deborah Miller (Manning) of Richmond, California; three step-daughters Toni, Tracie, and Jacqueline of Cleveland; one stepson, Percy also of Cleveland; 12 step-grand children; two uncles Zack Lewis (Anita) of Waynesboro, VA. and Roscoe Lewis (Maxine) of Cleveland; two sisters-in-law, Charlette Parrish and Lela Acoff; other relatives and many friends.

 

Gloria Anita Morganfield (August 9, 1949 - December 6, 2005)

Gloria Anita Morganfield was born August 9, 1949 in Cleveland, Ohio to Elve Morganfield, who preceded her in death, and Dorothy Sayles Morganfield.  She accepted Christ as Lord and Savior of her life at an early age at True Vine Baptist Church on Lynn Drive under the late Rev. William Nickerson.  She was a member of the Red Circle, Sunshine Band, Youth Choir, and the Jr. Usher Board.  She later united with Christian Unity Baptist Church on E. 105th Street in Cleveland, Ohio.  Gloria graduated from Glenville High School in 1967 and retired from Ameritech after 28 years of service.  Her retirement was celebrated by staying active and working part-time at North Point Restaurant, Customer Service at Richmond Mall, as a trainer at Curves on Lake Shore Boulevard, and an Art consultant for Artistic Expression.  Gloria loved helping others - regardless of the task.  Her big heart enabled her to care for all.  Her skills in decorating and making things beautiful is envisioned by her gorgeous home.  She shared her knowledge freely - encouraging everyone to “try it” - oftentimes claiming, “you can do it.”  Gloria loved fine dining and cooking;  again, readily willing to share her knowledge.  She was a member of the East Cleveland Theater, she loved to bowl, travel, and she liked telling you like it is, and she would try anything new.  She was the epitome of the expression that says in order to become a friend and make a friend, you must present yourself friendly.  Precious memories are cherished by her mother, Dorothy Sayles Morganfield; step-grandmother, Edith Morganfield;  six sisters, Beverly Jean Martin Davis of Gretna, LA, Leora M. (Jackie) Johnson, Evie M. (Michael) Johnson, Janet Head, Xanique Davis, all of Cleveland, OH, and Evelyn Head Bernard of Omaha, NE;  four brothers, Elvin Keith Morganfield, Gerald Sayles, of Cleveland, OH, Gerriell (Teresa) Sayles of Akron, OH, and Oliver (Barbara) Martin of Toronto, Canada;  her God-mother, Mrs. Dorothy Dozier and her sons and daughters;  nine aunts, Reola Nickerson, Virgie (Clifford) Austin of Cleveland, OH, Verneeta (Elton) Jackson, Florence Wiley, Loretta (Ernest) Franklin, Jeanette Morganfield of Memphis, TN, Eddie Mae Howard of Cleveland, OH, Jane Morganfield of Clarksdale, MS and Izola Sayles of Gary, IN;  one uncle, Rev. Odell Smith Moore

Odell Smith Moore was the third daughter born to the late Alex and Mary Smith on November 11, 1916 in Mason, Tennessee. She accepted the Lord at an early age and kept him always in her heart and life. He was her salvation and strength throughout her trials and tribulations. She was a member of the New Community Bible Fellowship in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.  "Dell", as she was affectionately referred to by her family and friends, was joined in married to James Augusta Moore on October 14, 1941 and moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1944, where she opened her heart and home to everyone that she met. This union was blessed with two sons: Michael Willie (Yvette) and Timothy (Denise), and five daughters: Mary Ellen Tucker, Augusta Moore Brown, Maya Thomas-Bey. Elouise Moore, and Christine Sanders (Steve).  "Dell" was multi-talented and a hard worker. Her talents were evident with her beautiful quilts, her cooking and gardening skills, and her famous "to die for" canning treats. And she had time to devote to raising her children.  She was preceded in death by her loving husband (1979), and her sisters Samella Somerville (1986) and Robbie Watson (1998).  In addition to her child, she leaves to cherish her memory: 19 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 5 great- great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.   "Dell you will be missed, but not forgotten."

 

Carolyn B. Morris (December 28, 1949 - February 15, 2004)

On December 28, 1949, Eddie D. Davis and Dorothy E. Davis were blessed with their first beautiful baby girl.  She was named Carolyn.  As God commanded, Carolyn honored her parents.  With much love and nurturing, Carolyn developed into a beautiful, loving, caring, unselfish, strong woman.  These characteristics were evident with each endeavor she pursued.  Carolyn was introduced to Christ and baptized into the body of faith as a young girl at Greater Friendship Baptist Church.  She continued her Christian growth through membership at the Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church were she continued.  She was proud to serve the congregation as assistant secretary.  Carolyn lived life.  She was proud to have graduated from Glenville High School.  She had very fond memories of the friends she met during elementary, middle and high school.  She was proud to have maintained those friendships.  She sought to enhance her administrative skills by attending career enhancing programs.  She had recently been enrolled at Tri-C Community College in pursuit of a degree in Business Administration.  She enjoyed the challenge of learning new computer programs and had a talent for typing.  While she was committed to her career development, she was most passionate about children.  While she was married to Dennis Morris, she became the proud mother of Kellie LaChielle and Anthony Demetricus.  She was totally committed to them.  Fortunately, her love for children extended into the lives of other children.  She volunteered with the East Cleveland Headstart program for many years.  She loved this experience. She also volunteered as a Big Sister through Big Sisters/Big Brothers.  She served as a dedicated Girl Scout Troop Leader and assisted with Boy Scouting.  She later became employed and served as a positive as role model as a Community Respite Worker (Mentor for troubled teens) and most recently as a child care playroom attendant.  Carolyn believed strongly in family.  She always considered the needs and requests of family and friends as a priority in life.  She was a blessed servant.  She will be forever remembered, honored, and celebrated by those she leaves to cherish her memory:  Kellie Lachielle Morris (Daughter), Anthony Demetricus Morris (Son); two sisters Patricia Davis-Meadows of Cleveland, OH and Linda Davis-Nettles of Atlanta, GA;  3 nieces Rochelle, Shayla, and Shair, other relatives, and many special friends.

 

Jessie Clinton Morris (July 1, 1921 - April 13, 2007)

Jessie Clinton Morris was born on July 1, 1921 to the late Linzzie and Pearl Morris (Elliot) in Humboldt, Tennessee. His aunt Linvena McCatherance raised Jessie after the death of his mother at the age of three. He was the youngest sibling of three; his brother Samuel and sister Ella Mae both preceded him in death. Jessie accepted Christ at the age of 12 years old at Free Will Baptist Church in Paducah, Kentucky, under the leadership of the late Rev. More.  He was educated in the Paducah School system at Lincoln Grade School and Lincoln High School.  After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and from 1945 until 1947 with an Honorable Discharge.  Jessie Clinton Morris and Loretta Carter were joined in Holy Matrimony and of this union five sons were born.  One son Jessie Jr. preceded him in death. He relocated to Cleveland in 1955 where he met and fell in love with Annie J. Washington and of this union two daughters were born.  As a family, they united with Hartfield Primitive Baptist Church.  He was ordained as a Deacon under the leadership of the Rev. A.V. Caniness.  Later joined Antioch Primitive Baptist Church under the late W .H. Hobbs where he served until uniting with Willing Workers Baptist Church under the leadership of the late E.D. Ward, where Jessie accepted his calling as a Minister on March 29, 1964 under the leadership of the late Thomas M. Matthews.  Rev. Morris served at Antioch Prayer and Praise Church where he worshipped until his health failed.  Jessie worked at Rivers Melting & Refining Company for many years. He retired in 1989 after his health failed him.  Jessie enjoyed telling stories of his football days in high school and his career in the Army.  He came from an avid family of athletes.  Both he and his brother Samuel played football.  Jean his niece played basketball also.  The legacy continues with his grandsons Andre (Man), Anthony (Boo) and his great grandson Andre Jr.  He also loved to sing church hymns even while in the hospital.  Rev. Jessie Morris leave to cherish his memories, four sons:  Alvin, Harry, Larry and Anthony Morris of Louisville, Kentucky;  two daughters, Gwendolyn-Smith and Renee Morris both of Cleveland, Ohio; eight grandchildren:  Andrea (Brandon) Johnson, Andre (Heather) Smith,  Alaija Morris, Anthony Smith, Tiffany Morris, Derrick Morris, Brian Smith and Isaac Smith all of Cleveland, Ohio; one niece Linda Davis of Akron, Ohio;  two nephews:  Kenneth (Terry) Morris of Louisville, Kentucky and Rev. Dr. James Morris of St. Louis, Missouri; seven great grand children and a host of other relatives and friends. Special thanks to Regina Bryant his Home Health Aid, the Staff of the V.A. Hospital; Deacon Springer and Deacon Stokes for the many scriptures and prayers given to him during his illness, and a very Special friend Annie Washington and son-in-law Anthony Smith.

Gwendolyn Marie Mosley (December 11, 1950 - December 10, 2004)

Gwendolyn Marie Mosley was born on December 11, 1950 to Jeanne Mosley-Pelly and the late Ralph Eugene Mosley.  Gwendolyn completed her education through the Cleveland Public School System.  She attended Cuyahoga Community College where she received an Associates Degree in Emergency Medical Training.  She accepted an appointment with the United States Postal Service where she was employed for over twenty years.  She attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.  Gwendolyn was known to keep everyone laughing and in high spirits.  She was also an excellent cook who enjoyed family cookouts.  She was a good listener, a great friend and had a unique talent for making people love her.  She passed away peacefully in her home on Friday December 10, 2004.  She is mourned by her daughters, April Chelsea (Legba) and Raquel Irene;  her mother, Jeanne Mosley-Pelly;  her sister, Eugenia Rae (Gerald) Rupert;  five grandchildren who brought her joy, Jacob, Ramses, Jeremiah, Sasen and Sutchat;  her long time companion, Dexter Hunter;  a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, cousins, friends and blessed acquaintances.  The family wishes to express a sincere thank you to the Reeder Family for their love and support.

 

Charline Muhammad (December 4, 1935 - March 21, 2008)

Charline (Wicks) Muhammad was born in Forrest City, Arkansas.  The proud parents Charlie and Lear Wicks announced the birth of their beautiful baby girl December 4, 1935.  She was the eldest of six siblings.  Charline accepted Islam in 1963 and later became a member of Masjid Al Warithdeen.  Charline met and married her love A. R. Muhammad and from this union seven children were born:  Letorio, Charmane and Anthony (who preceded her in death), Ishmael, Fatima, Shatibah and Malachi.  Charline inherited her love of cooking from her mother at an early age.  She dedicated her life to Islam and her family.  Charline was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.  Her other passion was the work she enjoyed at the Masjid Al Warithdee
