Bertha Samuel - Thompson (April 24, 1928 - October 15, 2007) 

Mother Bertha M. Samuel-Thompson was born April 24, 1928 in Wayne, Alabama to Maxie and Essie (nee Williams) Miller.  She grew up and attended school in Baker, Florida.  Mother Thompson came to Cleveland in 1963 where she later married Bishop Willie C. Samuel.  Mother Thompson was a wonderful Church Mother who was saved, sanctified and filled with the Holy Ghost.  She worshipped under Pastor Samuel Lockhart.  After the passing of Pastor Lockhart, Bishop Samuel established his own church where she served for over fifteen years as the First Lady.  After the passing of her husband, Bishop Samuel, Mother worshipped and served under Pastors Freddie Thomas and Willie Winbush.  Mother Thompson and Elder Isaac Thompson married in 1993 and joined Peoples Church of God in Christ in 1996.  They both remained faithful and supportive to this ministry until God called them home.  Mother Thompson was a “true example of Discipleship”.  She knew how to calm you down and cast the devil out at the same time.  Mother knew what it meant and took to “live holy”.  She had a habit of asking God to forgive her everyday, even when things were alright.  Mother Thompson was known as a “Prayer Warrior” who knew how to reach heaven.  Sometimes God answered her right away, and sometimes he said not now.  If you knew Mother Thompson, you knew how she loved music, quartet groups and good gospel preaching from her Pastor and the late Bishop G.E. Patterson.  Mother might have been a “senior citizen” in age, but not in spirit.  She praised God in a dance until her body couldn’t keep up.  Mother had a library of Christian Videos and DVDs.  When she could no longer attend church, she was still having church in her home.  Mother Thompson “WILL BE MISSED”   Mother Bertha M. Samuel-Thompson went home to be with the Lord on October 15, 2007, in Mansfield, OH.  Those who have preceded her in death include her parents; husband Bishop Willie C. Samuel and husband Elder Isaac Thompson; five brothers: Wilson Miller, Rayford Miller, Ben Miller, James Miller and James Harvey Miller; two sisters: Mae Miller and Verdell Blue Crestview.  Mother Thompson leaves to cherish her memories one son, Johnnie Earl Miller of Cleveland, OH; five additional children that she raised – three sons: Douglas (Tressy) Samuel, Isaac (Janice) Thompson, Jr. both of Cleveland, OH, and Jeppie Samuel of Fort Walton Beach, FL; two daughters: Jackie Hart and Deborah (Willie) Green both of Fort Walton Beach, FL; four brothers: Maxie Miller of Warren, OH, Eddie Lee Miller of Pittsburgh, PA, Lacy Miller of South Carolina and Frank Miller of Cleveland, OH; one sister Lillie Bell Cobb of Wayne, AL; as well as a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other loving relatives and friends.

 

Cherry Jean Sanders (March 7, 1949 - December 6, 2003)

Cherry was born March 7, 1949 in Jackson, Mississippi to Eugene Travis and Christine Manogin, both who preceded her in death.  Cherry attended Carver High school located in Montgomery, AL. Upon completion, she moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1968.  She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age and rededicated her life to Christ in 2000, as a member of the Glenville Church of God.  Soon after moving to Cleveland, she met Johnnie Sanders and they married on October 1, 1970.  To this union was born Angela Denise (who preceded her in death), Johnnie, Jr., Cherisse, and Kevin.  Cherry knew many people and whenever she met someone she always took the time to stop and talk. Cherry was employed at Finast Supermarket for seven years and Cleveland Heights/University Heights Board of Education for eighteen years.  She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of thirty-three years, Johnnie, Sr.; her children, Johnnie, Jr. (Stephanie), Cherisse, and Kevin; and five grandchildren, Tyara, Johnnie III, Katrina, Cheron, and Stephan.  She leaves two brothers, Eugene Travis, Jr. (Gwen) and Johnel Travis (Alesia) of Montgomery, AL.; three brothers-in-law and five sisters-in-law Willie James Sanders (Jerry) of Toledo, OH, Myron Sanders Sr. (Elethia), Fred Sanders (Donzella) of Cleveland Heights, OH., Esther Armistad, and Hazel Davis of Cleveland, OH.; one Road Dog and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.  Cherry is loved by many and will be missed dearly.

 

Frederick Raymond Sanders (April 26, 1950 - July 19, 2005)

Frederick Raymond Sanders was born in Cleveland, Ohio on April 26, 1950 to Willie & Pearl “Dear” Sanders who both preceded him in death.  He was the fifth of six children.  Fred attended the Cleveland Public School System.  He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a young age.  In 2003, he rededicated his life to Christ at Glenville Church of God.  On August 31, 1979 he married Donzella Lewis and together they raised their four children: Mike, Stephanie, Peaches and Angie.  Fred was employed by General Motors Corporation for 36 years.  He was a proud and dedicated employee who enjoyed his job and made many friends over the years.  Fred was blessed with good hands.  He and his brothers worked together on many projects.  He also had a passion for woodworking.  He was enrolled as a student at The Cleveland Woodworking Academy and had built a dresser and chest for his wife.  He was in the process of completing two nightstands and a headboard.  His work as a craftsman was fulfilling.  It brought him peace and serenity.  He was a man who enjoyed life and brought joy to everyone around him.  He was a leader and when he spoke everyone listened.    Fred was an excellent role model for many people.  His spirit was a light and drew many to him and his presence was magnetizing.  He was truly a blessing to his family and friends and will be sorely missed.  He leaves to celebrate his life, his wife, Donzella; four children, Michael (Tammy), Stephanie (Shawn), Rachella, & Angela; three brothers, Willie (Jerry), Johnnie, & Myron (Elethia); two sisters, Esther & Hazel; eight grandchildren, Shaquita, Michael II., John II, Jasmine, Christian, Shonn, Anissa, and Alston.  He also leaves a special brother, Charles Carr (JoAnn)  and many nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends.  Fred will be missed by more people than he could have ever imagined.

 

Kevin Eugene Sanders (April 7, 1980 - May 15, 2004)

Kevin was born on April 7, 1980, in Cleveland, Ohio to Johnnie W. & Cherry J. Sanders.  He attended Cleveland Heights High School. After leaving high school, Kevin held several employment positions and was Co-Owner of two businesses, So Fresh & So Clean Auto Detailing Shop and Big Boi Towing.  Kevin recently became a member of the Glenville Church of God and accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. He knew many people and was affectionately known as "Church" to his family and close friends.  Kevin departed this life to be with the Lord on May 15, 2004. His beloved mother, Cherry Jean Sanders and sister, Angela Denise, preceded him in death.  He Leaves to cherish his memory, his father Johnnie “Wonderful” Sanders; his brother and sister, Johnnie Jr., (Stephanie) and Cherisse “Resey;” five nieces and nephews, Tyara, Johnnie III, Katrina, Cheron, and Stephan.  He leaves five uncles and aunts, Eugene (Gwen) Travis Jr. and Johnel (Alesia) Travis of Montgomery, Alabama, Willie (Jerry) Sanders of Toledo, Ohio, Myron (Elethia) Sanders, Sr., Fred (Donzella) Sanders, Esther Armistad, and Hazel Sanders of Cleveland, Ohio; Two partners in crime, Nooty and Dre. and many great-aunts, great-uncles, cousins, and friends.  Church's enormous smile and presence will be missed by all who knew him.

 

Diane Sauvey (September 5, 1945 - November 12, 2006)

Diane Sauvey, the daughter of Frank S. Carter and Nellie Marie Carter, was born Olivia Diane Carter on September 5th , 1945.  Born in Cleveland, Ohio she attended Cleveland Public Schools until high school.  Before finishing high school, Diane ventured to Columbus, Ohio to live with her aunt and uncle, Floyd and Ester Johnson, to attend East High School, as her father did before her.  After graduating from East High she attended Ohio State University While at OSU, Diane divided her interests as an active participant of campus life at OSU by becoming a champion of racial equity during the Civil Rights Movement.  She was one of the thousands of people who participated in the historic March on Selma, Alabama.  She made time for dozens of diverse friends at OSU, and even managed to find time to briefly pledge in the AKA sorority.  Eventually, Diane met and had a son with George Brown.  After leaving OSU, she stayed in Columbus until roughly 1975 when she and Leighton, her son, moved to Wichita, KS.  In Kansas, Diane made it he mission to expose Leighton to as many interesting characters and rich experiences as possible.  She worked at Boeing Aircraft Manufacturer and married Brian Sauvey for four years. Diane and Leighton enjoyed the six years they lived in Kansas, but in 1981, and she and her son returned to Cleveland and lived with Diane's parents in the Collinwood area of Cleveland.  Most recently, Diane worked as an independently contractor delivering packages for UPS.  She preferred the flexible schedule the work afforded her so that she could visit her only grandson, Ian Alexander Carter in Culver City, California.  In addition to sharing time with Ian, she collected hundreds of baseball cards and attended jazz concerts as a member of the Northeast Ohio Jazz Association.  At the close of Diane's life journey, she leaves behind her son, Leighton Carter, her grandson, Ian, her mother Nellie Carter, her younger brother, Frank Leyton Carter and nephews, Jehmiah, Frank, Brandon, Kevin, and Christopher and niece, Christina.  In addition to her immediate family, Diane's earnest thoughtfulness and quirky disposition will be sorely missed by a score of friends and extended family.

Elbert P. Scott (September 30, 1924 - January 8, 2007)

Elbert P. Scott was born in Cleveland, Ohio on September 30, 1924 to William Ross and Ella Mae Peavie.  As a result of his mother’s passing at childbirth, Elbert was adopted and raised by Robert and Alice Scott.  He accepted Christ into his life and was educated in the Cleveland Public School System.  Elbert was employed as an auto mechanic for a local auto body shop.  Working on cars was something that he truly loved and could talk about all day.  He was a quiet and family oriented man with a variety of interests that included raising birds, watching the Discovery Channel, watching boxing matches, and staying up to date on current events.  He also loved to play chess and listen to jazz.  On Monday January 8, 2007, Elbert departed this life.  He is preceded in death by his mother, his adoptive parents, as well as his children Leon Scott, Marcia Scott and Elbert Scott Jr.  Those left to mourn and to cherish his memories include his loving wife of sixty one years, Theresa;  their children Edward (Charlene) Scott, Robert Scott, Carl (Barbara) Scott, Carolyn (James) Harris, Diane (Samuel) Rogers, Pamela (Ramsey) Ellis, Elaine Scott, Elberta (Barry) Johnson as well as his son Sean Whitie;  three sisters, Gloria Lee, Sandra (Roscoe) Heath and Louise (Oliver) Carty;  twenty-eight grandchildren;  eighteen great-grandchildren;  one great-great-grandchild;  other loving relatives and friends.

 

Lemon Scruggs (February 17, 1923 - June 14, 2006)

On February 17, 1923, God made a special delivery to the late Horace and Carrie Scruggs with the birth of LeMon, the seventh of thirteen children. In July of 1953, God guided LeMon to meet Harriet Moore. They found that they shared Christian values and had other common interests. They fell in love and married on December 11, 1954. General Motors was the recipient of his hard worked from 1952 until his retirement in 1985. He encouraged others to seek employment there and was always happy when he saw others trying to improve themselves, especially in academia. No academic achievement was too small and he often commented on the fact that youngsters today were not taking advantage of opportunities he wished he had had when he was their age. He was the embodiment of a man who loved his family and his church. His constant desire was that his family and his friends, "Keep in touch!" Who could possibly list all of his church activities? He served as an usher, Sunday School teacher, elder, groundskeeper, garbage man, gate keeper, food server, and dishwasher. he was also a member of The Servants for Christ. He was awarded a plaque from the Missionary Society for his service to the organization, even though he was not a member. His love of gospel music was evident to those who saw him at choir rehersals, where he was often seen with this eyes closed and his head bobbing - "directing" the choir from the pews.  As long as his health permitted, he did not allow grass to grow under his feet. God decided that on the morning of June 14, 2006, LeMon's job on earth was done. Left to continue the celebration of his life are his wife Harriet; son, Greg (Elizabeth) of Manassas, VA; daughters, Greta Kisner (Allan, Sr.) of Richmond Heights, and Gwanna, of Cleveland Heights; Four grandchildren, Aprille, Garret, Allan, Jr., and Gabrielle Kisner if Richmond Heights; three sisters, Elise Bowling, Helen Smith, and Margaret Cunningham; three brothers, Horace, Jr., Arthur (Irene), and Charles (Minnie); sisters-in-law Mollie Scruggs, Luella Lee, Ora Lockhart, Eleazer Gamble, Lucy Thomas (Nathan), Ruby Smith, and Bertha Carter (James); brothers-in-law Luther Moore (Delores); special friends Elder Menefee Moses and Drene Ivy; 'adopted'; son, Leon Adams; "adopted" daughter, Audrey O'Neal; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

 

Mollie Scruggs (January 11, 1925 - March 5, 2007)

Mollie Scruggs was born on January 11, 1925 in Montgomery, Alabama to the union of Thomas and Susie (nee Rudolph) Harris.  While in Alabama, Mollie received her early education.  She also united in marriage and to that union one child was born, Veto Pressley Jr.  On December 19, 1949, Mollie and her young son moved to Cleveland, Ohio.  Several years later on August 11, 1965 and at the home of her sister Ellen Crosby, Mollie was united in matrimony to Connie Scruggs. Mollie, who became a member of Everlasting Baptist Church on November 6, 1994, was a sweet and outgoing lady who loved to cook and to take care of children.  She will surely be missed!   On Monday March 5, 2007, Mollie departed this life.  She is preceded in death by her parents, by her son Veto Pressley, Jr. who passed away on March 7, 1973, and by her husband Connie Scruggs who passed away on July 31, 1987.  She is also preceded by siblings Bessie Mae Lewis and Thomas Harris as well as by one great-grandchild.  Those left to mourn and to cherish her memories include sisters, Ellen Crosby of Cleveland, Ohio, Annie Mae Steiner and Lucille Frazier, both of Montgomery, Alabama, as well as Ruby Brooks of Tarpon, Florida;  one brother, Noble Harris of Montgomery, Alabama;  two grandchildren, Brenda Denise Boyd and Veda Boyd, both of Cleveland, Ohio;  fourteen great-grandchildren;  caregivers:  niece, Betty A. Harris, great-niece, Veda Harris Malone and great-nephew, LaVelle Harris, all of Cleveland, Ohio;  Darryl Montgomery of Cleveland, Ohio who was like a son;  Carrie Smith of Cleveland, Ohio who was a caring neighbor and “sister”;  other loving relatives and friends.

 

Richard Segines Sr. (August 31, 1944 - May 8, 2007)

Richard Segines, Sr. was born on August 31, 1944 in Bristol, Virginia to the loving union of Thelma Segines and Jay Vaught.  In 1946, the family moved to Cleveland where Richard accepted Christ into his life at an early age.  Following graduation from Max S. Hayes High School on June 15, 1962 and after receipt of his automotive license, Richard entered the U. S. Army on November 29, 1963.  He earned National Defense Service Medal and Sharpshooter commendations and was honorably discharged on November 9, 1966.  After leaving the military, Richard, who was affectionately known as “Daddy Rich”, worked at Warner & Swassey for about ten years.  In 1963, Richard met Brenda Preston and on January 8, 1965 the two were united in holy matrimony.  To their union five children were born:  Tonja, Richard, Dawn, Antoine Segines and Dalton Preston Jr.  After this relationship ended in the late 1970’s, Richard entered into a loving relationship with Elaine Richmond and accepted her daughter, Darlena, as his own.  Their family grew to include their son, Richard Richmond.  Later in life, Richard enjoyed a loving relationship with Thelma Gholston who has preceded him in death.  Richard had a special love for cars and dogs and could listen to a car and fix any problem.  He was well known and couldn’t drive down the street without someone saying “Hey Daddy Rich, give me a ride!”  “Daddy Rich” was a party animal and a jokester. He loved to get all of the family together and have hotdog cookouts.  He truly enjoyed being a father and especially a grandfather.  He didn’t like to share the spotlight so he would tell a story, sing a song or two and dance with his children.   He was famous for saying “Do it first, ask later”;  “All ugly people look this way!”;  and “Where’s my favorite kid at.” 

 “Daddy Rich” learned of his heart illness in the early 1990’s.  It wasn’t until late 2004 that his illness progressed to the point where he needed a defibrillator.  In the early morning of May 8, 2007, Richard was finally able to go Home.  He leaves his memories alive in the children he raised: Tonja Segines, Shaquitta Segines, Marquitta Segines, Shawnna Segines, Kamariyah Segines, Darwin Segines, Richard Segines Jr., Felicity Segines, A’Nya Lee Segines, Dawn Segines, Perrices Segines, Portia Segines, Preschus Segines, Antoine Segines Sr., Antonie Segines Jr.; Richard Richmond; DeJarnira Shepard, Darlena (Edgar) Shepherd, Ariel Shepard, Bryan Shepard, Curtis Shepard, Bryan Shepard, Jonathan Shepherd; Dalton Preston Jr. (Tina), Marquela Preston, Jasmine Preston, Zilijah Preston; Dorothy Banks, Sanisha Banks, Charles Banks Jr.; and five cousins who were like brothers to him, Anthony Banks, Robert Booker, Michael Booker, Clarence Booker & James Stevens.

 

James Franklin Settles (August 5, 1935 - January 26, 2005)

James Franklin Settles was one of five children born to the late Hackett and Betty (Wallings) Settles on August 5, 1935 in McMinnville, Tennessee. He was educated in the Warren County Schools receiving his diploma from Bernard High School where he was also a star athlete. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served honorably from 1952 to 1955.  On June 6, 1958, James married Doris L. Holder. They later relocated to Cleveland, Ohio, where he was employed at S. Barker's Sons Company. He was a hard and dedicated worker, and remained an employee for more than 20 years until his health began to fail. James, affectionately known as "Hack", loved fishing & watching baseball and football games. He was also a proud Veteran, often sharing stories of his days in Korea.  He received individual citations for National Defense, Korea and U.N. Service Medal.  James entered into rest on Wednesday, January 26 after a lengthy illness. He leaves to cherish his memory, a devoted wife of 46 years, Doris Settles; one precious daughter, Patricia (Michael) Buchanan of Clarksville, TN; four beloved sons, Kenneth Settles, Leonard (Delecia) Settles, both of Cleveland, OH, Charles (Joanne) Settles of Washington, and Anthony (LaDonna) Settles of Maple Hts, OH; one sister, Dorothy (Edward) Solomon of TN; two brothers, Zollie (Vera) Settles of TN and Rollie (Lillie) Settles of AZ; sisters-in-law, Lottie (Amos) Mathis, Matilda Scott, Beverly Holder and Ruthie Holder;  brothers-in-law, Rufus Holder, Jimmy Holder, Terry (Jackie) Holder and Kenny Curry; 14 grandchildren, Antonio, Marjorie, Kenetta, Wakita, Malika, Akeem, Kenta, Cathy, Leonard II, Jamaal, Jarell, Jalisa, Retha, and Michael II; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Joe and Charles Settles; and 2 grandchildren, Aliyah and Aaron Settles. 

 

Sarah Jane Seymoure (March 5, 1920 - March 28, 2008)

Sarah Jane (nee Nolan) Seymoure was born in Roanoke, Alabama on March 5, 1920 to George and Olevia (nee Bell) Nolan.  She was the fourth of seven children born of this union.  Sarah attended Randolph County Training School in Roanoke. She later accepted Christ and was baptized at First Baptist Church in Roanoke. She met and married John Seymoure and to this union two (2) children were born, Sara Rose and Mary Jean. She later moved to Cleveland, Ohio to be with her family.  On Friday March 28, 2008, Sarah entered into eternal rest.  She is preceded in death by her parents; four (4) brothers, George, Lewis, Harold and John; two (2) sisters, Janie and Maggie;  he husband; daughter, Mary Jean Smith; as well as by granddaughter, Patricia.  Those left to cherish her memory include one daughter, Sara Rose Jackson of Cleveland, Ohio; six grandchildren, Ivan (Jane) Jackson of Harker Heights, Texas, Edward (Lynn) Smith of Madison, Wisconsin, Michael Jackson of Cleveland, Ohio, Isaac Smith of Jersey City, New Jersey and Wendy Smith of Silver Springs, Maryland; eighteen great-grandchildren; fourteen great-great-grandchildren; two nephews, Charlie (Sabra) Thomas and Johnny Thomas; and niece, Debra (Marvin) Spates, all of Cleveland, Ohio;  as well as a host of other loving relatives and friends.  We love you mom, but GOD loves you best.

 

Mary Ruth Shealy

Mary Ruth Shealy was born to Pleas and Fannie Carr, (both preceded her in death).  She was born in Birmingham, Alabama September 6, 1928.  She graduated from Parker High School in Birmingham, Alabama.  She came in 1963.  She joined Starlight Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio and was a member for over forty years.  She was in the Missionary Ministry.  She retired from Western Union.  She became ill and was not able to attend church.  She lived in Indian Hills for 34 years.  She was also an Eastern Star.  She's at Rest, she's in the arms of the Lord.  She leaves to cherish her memory four children, Gloria (Charles), Patricia (Charles) preceded her in death, Joyce (Artie), Reginia (Stan) and Dwayne (Lillie); two brothers, one sister (deceased), one brother living Robert Carr, one special sister-in-law (Katie) and three other sisters-in-law; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; she loved her great and her great-grandchildren; two godsons, Sedale and Langston, two special Goddaughters, Laniece and Danita and a host of relatives and friends.

 

Violet Lee Shelton (June 23, 1951 - November 3, 2006)

Violet Lee Shelton, was born to Willie and Louise Williams  on June 23, 1951. Violet attended the Cleveland public school system.  She also worked as a Security Guard for Cleveland State University. Violet confessed Christ at an early age in her life. Before she became ill she was a faithful member of Second Tabernacle Baptist Church, on Union Ave in Cleveland Ohio under the teaching of Reverend Thomas E Chapman.  Violet was taken home on Friday November 3, 2006 while sleeping peacefully in the comfort of her home.  Violet leaves to mourn: A loving mother Louise Williams;  Two beautiful children Sylvia M. Gullatt (La-Shaune).Charles E. Shelton (Sheron), five grand children,La-Shaune, Tashay, Charles Jr., Chatiana and Chariana. Two sisters Gloria Wilson (Raymond) Shirley Johnson (Johnny) one special Aunt Lucille, five nieces Rhonda Pitts, Stacy Mays, Gloria Mays, Fanecia Cummings, Latasha Cummings and one nephew Robert Cummings and a host of great aunts, great nieces, nephews, first cousins and numerous other relatives and friends.

 

Bonita G. Shephard-Lemon (March 3, 1954 - November 19, 2005)

Bonita was born in Cleveland, Ohio on March 3, 1954 to Frank V. Shepherd who preceded her in death and Cassie Pearl Shepherd.  She was the second of four children.  She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized by the Rev. J.J. Richardson at Alpha Baptist Church.  She sang in the Youth Choir while there.  She later joined Everlasting Baptist Church and attended Sunday School under the training of Mother Mildred Rochelle.  She attended school in Cleveland and graduated from Glenville High School in 1972.  She attended Aims Business School and became employed by Blue Cross Insurance Company of Ohio.  She was later employed at Cleveland Clinic Hospital as a Communications Specialist.  In 1973, she married her high school sweetheart Mario Moore and to this union one son, Marlon was born.  Bonita was a wonderful mother, and Marlon was her Pride and Joy.  She touched the hearts of many people who crossed her path.  She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory:  loving son, Marlon (Yolandra); beloved mother, Cassie P. Shepherd; sister, Mary Harris; brother, Frank W. Shepherd; sister, Patricia Battle (Floyd); grandsons, Marlon and Mario Moore; and a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

 

Demetrius A. Simmons (June 15, 1966 - May 26, 2007)

Demetrius Auturo Simmons, affectionately known as “Deek”, was born on June 15, 1966 in Chicago, Illinois.  As a toddler, Deek moved with his family to Cleveland.  He joined Starlight Baptist Church in Cleveland where he enjoyed singing in the choir.  In addition, Deek was a 1984 graduate of Shaw High School and a graduate of ETI as a computer technician.  Over the years, he held various jobs at BP Standard Oil, E-Check, Fairview General Hospital and Sears.  Deek primarily worked in the area of electronics which wasn’t a surprise to anyone that knew him because he had a unique talent for repairing things at a very young age.  He was affectionately known as the family repairman!  Deek loved his mother and his sister with a passion.  He liked helping other people and was definitely there for those who needed his assistance.  He had a great smile and a very humorous and comedic presence.  Once he got started, he would have you laughing for hours!  He loved his family and especially his first cousins - Angie, Nicole, Derek, Michael, Raymon and the late Ernest IV, who will all greatly miss him.  Deek’s hobbies included collecting vintage model cars, watches and various electronic gadgets and lifting weights.  When he wanted bragging rights, he wanted to be called “BIG DADDY”.  Deek departed this life on May 26, 2007 and is preceded in death by his mother, Pearl M. Simmons, who passed away in 1986.  Deek never recovered from her death and life just wasn’t the same.  It took a piece of his heart that could never be replaced.  He can now rest in peace and be with his mom who he truly loved.  Those left to mourn and to cherish his memories include his sister, Linda Simmons-Covington; nephew, Carl F. Covington II;  niece, Kasha Monè Covington;  aunts, Thelma (Mack) Stockdale, Norma (Robert) Worthy, Gwendolyn (Ernest) Renshaw, and Kathryn Annette;  uncles, Lawrence Reed Jr. and Dr. James E. (Mary) Reed;  cousins, other loving relatives and friends.

 

Lillian O. Simms (July 31, 1926 - January 4, 2008)

Lillian Ophilia Simms born July 31, 1926 in Starksville, Mississippi. Lillian was the third child of seven born to Benjamin and Madie Powers, both proceeded her in death. The Powers family moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1929. Lillian confessed Christ at an early age and joined Liberty Hill Baptist Church. She later joined The Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church.  She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Fred Berry and to this union one son was born Fred Berry Jr.  She later married the late Napoleon Gooch and later Larry Simms.  Lillian Ophilia Simms departed this life in sickness. Friday, January 4, 2008.  She leaves to cherish her memories one son Fred Berry Jr., two sisters Katherine Jackson and Mamie Peterson. One brother George Powers. Two granddaughters, Nichelle and Desiree (Gary Cuttrelle) and one great-grand daughter Summer.

 

Demitrius Alan Lewis Simpson (September 9, 1983 - November 28, 2005)

Demitrius Alan Lewis Simpson (“Meech”) was born on September 9, 1983 in San Jose, California as the biological son of David Lewis and Cheryl Jones-Lewis.  As a child, he was very kind and heart giving, often aiding his grandparents, William and Adell Jones, at the young age of four.  Becoming a ward of the State of California and no longer being able to live with his grandparents, Demitrius, along with his brother Terrell, were moved from California to Cleveland, Ohio in 1990.  Demitrius and his brother were placed in the care of William and Sylvia Simpson in an effort to keep the family ties together (Sylvia is the blood relative).  After years of foster care, the Simpson family adopted Demitrius and Terrell.  Meech showed a very high intelligence in his grade school and junior high years, often achieving honor and merit roll grades.  Having been given a child’s drum set, he learned rhythms and beats quickly, so he joined the Drum Corps of Shiloh Baptist Church under the guidance of his grade school music teacher.  Demitrius had many good times with his new family and longed for his California family.  Many times he would visit and laugh about the things he did with his siblings while growing up.  Although he was raised in the church, Demitrius did not come to Christ until he was a young adult.  He joined and was baptized at Greater Friendship Baptist Church, where the pastor is Dr. Larry Howard.  On November 28, 2005, Demitrius Alan Lewis Simpson’s spirit departed from us around 9:45 p.m.  In his leaving, Meech takes with him the love of the family that has survived him:  his son, Demitrius A. Simpson, Jr.; his mothers, Sylvia L. Simpson and Cheryl Jones-Lewis; his fathers, William T. Simpson and David Lewis; common-law-wife, Cristina Williams; his sisters, Katrina Williams Myers, DeJorel and Frances Simpson, DaQuandra Lewis, and Monica Phelps; his brothers, Terrell and Nickolas Simpson, Markell Harris and Johnny Phelps;  his grandmothers, Helen McCabe and Mary Alice Lewis; grandfather, Henry Lewis; uncle, Sheldon Jones and great-aunt, Willie B. McCoy; Albert Gardner, friend and acting grandparents to the Simpson children; and a host of other aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

 

Jaymar D. Sims Sr. (July 28, 1973 - May 8, 2006)

Jaymar Daraiel Sims Sr., affectionately called “Jay”, was born July 28, 1973 to the late Homer Willis III and Johnetta Sims-Scullark in Cleveland, Ohio. He attended the Cleveland Public School System and graduated from John F. Kennedy High School. Jay confessed hope in Christ at an early age.  Jay grew into a strong young man being reared and directed by his adopted father Milton L. Lewis since the age of four.  He was employed with Nestle Company for a number of years and held various other jobs. He loved spending quality time with this three boys and “Ma Ma” - the apples of his eye. Jay always had a special interest in his music, clothes, and cars. Traveling was one of his past time favorites. Patricia A. Skipper (March 8, 1968 - June 29, 2006)

Patricia A. Skipper (known as "Trici") March 8, 1968, the only child born to the late Leroy & Mary L. Skipper of Greensboro, Alabama.  Patricia spent most of her early years growing up in Cleveland Ohio. Until she was relocated back to Greensboro with her mother. She attended Greensboro Public School East and was a graduate of the Class of '86. After high school, Patricia was employed at the Golden Rod Broiler where she worked for several years.  Patricia confessed her life to Christ and was a baptized at the Union Grove Baptist Church.  Patricia was married January 26, 2004. to a wonderful and devoted man, James Ward. She was a devoted wife, sister, niece, and friend. She was very outgoing and understanding person, that always kept a smile on her face.  Patricia had a heart of gold and was always there for anyone who needed her. Ora Lee Slade (August 14, 1923 - December 12, 2004)

Ora Lee Slade was born on August 14, 1923 in Cleveland, Ohio and was the oldest of five children born to Oscar McCommon and Alberta McCommon.  Shortly after graduating from Central High School, Ora married Ernest Lincoln Slade.  He preceded her in death after forty-eight years of marriage.  Their union was blessed with five children.  For twenty-six years, Ora was devoted solely to being a wife and mother.  She later gained employment with the Hebrew Academy where she was employed for twenty-two years.   Ora was baptized at an early age by Rev. David Weldon Hill at Second Mount Sinai Baptist Church.  She later attended Crawford Road Christian Church for many years; her final church home was Bethany Christian Church.  Ora was in regular attendance until her health began to fail.  Ora loved to cook and was known for her delicious holiday meals and gatherings.  You were never asked to leave her home, although she was off to bed at seven o’clock sharp every evening!  Ora was very forthright!  Family and friends could depend on her to be honest with her thoughts and feelings.  She would always stress the importance of being independent and self-reliant.  She was called home to rest on Sunday morning, December 12, 2004.  Ora leaves to reflect her memory:  children, Reginald Slade, Elaine S. Anderson, Alan (Cynthia) Slade, Donileo Slade and Duane (Rosalind) Slade;  sister, Victoria O. Harrison;  eight grandchildren, Gary, Erika, Ronald, Ernest, Carlton, Robert Jr., Damien and Julian;  three great-grandchildren, Maya, Brianna, Brielle;  one niece, Sharon Lourens;  and a host of other relatives and friends.

Maurice Slaughter (October 11, 1944 - November 1, 2004)

Maurice Slaughter, who was the first child born to the late Haywood Slaughter and Elizabeth Norris Slaughter, was born on October 11, 1944, in Fairfield, Alabama.  Maurice, better known to his co-workers as "Mo", began working at the Cleveland Clinic Hospital in 1969 in the Central Supply Department as a Sterile Processing Tech before retiring on disability in 1997.  "Mo" departed this earthly life on Monday, November 1, 2004.  The memories of Maurice will be cherished by his sister, Wilhelmeni Slaughter; two uncles, Arveture Norris of Montgomery, Alabama; and Charlie (Carolyn) Norris of Montgomery, Alabama; and a host of cousins and devoted friends - especially his co-workers at Cleveland Clinic, Indian Hills Nursing Home, and Antioch Towers.

 

Albert Smith (February 29, 1928 - May 15, 2006)

Albert Smith was born February 29, 1928 to Willie Smith and Ora Cockran Smith in Covington, Georgia.  He was the second oldest of seven children.  He attended school in Covington, Georgia, and later married his school sweetheart, Gladys Fears, and they later moved to Detroit, Michigan.  He began working at Chrysler Corporation and later relocated to Cleveland, Ohio where he met and married Annie Taborn.  He continued working for Chrysler Corporation where he remained employed for 35 years.  He confessed to Christ at an early age and later joined Mt. Nebo Baptist Church.  Al’s hobbies consisted of cooking.  He cooked some of the best sweet potato pies around!  He loved working on cars and watching his WESTERNS on TV!  With a very short illness, he departed this life on Monday, May 15, 2006.  Albert was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Albert Earl, and two sisters, Margaret Giles and Lattie Gilstrop.  He leaves to cherish his memory a loving, devoted and FAITHFUL wife, Annie Smith; ten children, Horace, Diane, Barbara, Reginald, Floyd, Tyrone, Dalton, Albert, Jackie and Pam; two brothers, Billy (Ernestine) Smith of Detroit, Michigan and Bobby Smith Monroe of Covington, Georgia; four sisters, Willie Pearl Foster, Sarah Norwood, Ocie Franklin, Diane Smith Monroe, all of Covington, Georgia; two brothers-in-law, Samuel Hoye and Earl (Jeanette) Hoye; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

 

Dorothy Lee Smith (August 17, 1928 - October 17, 2004)

Dorothy Lee Smith was born August 17, 1928 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  She was the daughter of the late Richard and Savannah Smith. Shortly after her birth, her parents passed away. Then, she and her older brother, George, moved to Meadville, Pennsylvania and were raised by her late uncle Wilson and aunt Ella Johnson.  Dorothy confessed Christ and was baptized at an early age. She attended the Meadville public schools and graduated from Meadville High School.  Dorothy moved to Cleveland, Ohio where she met, fell in love, and married Eddie Louis Smith. From this union came six children.  Dorothy worked as a licensed practical nurse for the State Hospital for over 20 years before she retired in 1980. She also worked as a private duty nurse and was a licensed pharmacist.  Dorothy loved bowling and had won many trophies and awards in her league.  She also loved garage sales, puzzles, ceramic classes, bingo, playing cards, and watching football. Dorothy was a member of the Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio under the pastorate of Rev. Donald P. Newsom.  On October 17, 2004, God sent His angels to bring Dorothy's soul home. Her husband, Eddie L., son Robert, granddaughter Tina Lee Grays, and great-granddaughter Taylor Jenise Carter, all preceded her in death.  Dorothy leaves to cherish her loving memory, five daughters, Marsha Smith, Debra (Derrick) Harris, Lutisha Olgetree, Juanita (Gene Baker) Springer, and Theresa Smith, all of Cleveland, Ohio; a brother, George Smith of Las Vegas, Nevada; brother-in-law, John Lee Smith of Cleveland, Ohio; cousins Nathaniel Johnson, Gertrude Campbell, Cleola Richardson, & Elsie Martin; twelve grandchildren; thirty-five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other cousins, relatives, and many friends.

 

Floyd Bert Smith (March 20, 1933 - February 12, 2006)

 

Floyd L. Smith (October 5, 1980 - November 27, 2007)

Floyd L. Smith was born on October 5, 1980 in Cleveland, Ohio and was the second child born to Erline Smith and Floyd L. Austell.  Floyd attended Cleveland Public Schools were he was known to many as “J.R.”  Later on in life he achieved his General Education Diploma.  Floyd was a sensitive and extremely caring person with an enormous heart.  His hobbies included entertaining others and being an entrepreneur.  Floyd was a man that believed in God and in a higher power.  He was a devoted father who thought highly of his daughter, Nevaeh and made her the focus of his universe.  On Tuesday, November 27, 2007, Floyd departed this life.  Those left to mourn and to cherish his memories include his loving parents, Erline Smith and Floyd Austell; one loving daughter, Nevaeh Smith and her mother, Crystal; loving sisters Kisha Smith and Aletha;  three brothers, Baby Floyd, Almon and Raheem;  one special nephew, Michael Smith;  special soulmate Simone;  as well as a host of other loving relatives and friends.

 

Hattie Ann Smith (March 27, 1933 - April 8, 2006)

Hattie Ann was born on March 27, 1933 in Marion, Alabama to the union of Adell and Nancy (nee Underwood) Hope.  Not long after Hattie’s birth, the family moved to Gaston, Alabama where she was raised and received her education.  While in Gaston, she met and married Soul Smith.  In the early 1950’s, the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio where she gained employment as a presser with a dry cleaning establishment.  Hattie was a happy and outgoing woman who loved her family.  She was a good mother and considered a leader and role model by the family.  Her home was often the center of many family-oriented activities.  She was a good cook and her signature “Cha-Cha” will surely be missed.  On Saturday April 8, 2006, Hattie entered into rest.  She is preceded in death by her parents as well as by her husband.  Those left to mourn and to cherish her memories include her son, Jimmy Hope of Cleveland, Ohio;  four sisters, Susie (Frank) Billip of Cleveland, Ohio, Mary (Lindsey) Macon of Gaston, Alabama, Shirley (Edward) Johnson and Mollie (Albert) Williams, both of Cleveland, Ohio;  two brothers, Lee (Lillie) Hope of Cleveland, Ohio and Joe (Margaret) Hope of Gaston, Alabama;  two grandchildren;  as well as a host of other loving relatives and friends.

 

James Chappell Smith, Jr.

James Chappell Smith, Jr. was born in New York City on August 23, 1923 to James C. Smith, Sr. and Marcell Poole, his parents.  James is a United States Navy veteran who served his country in World War II from 1943 to 1946 and was honorably discharged.  James lived and worked in Cleveland, Ohio where he was self employed as a painting contractor with commercial and residential clients.  He was also involved with his religious affiliation.  On this day, Wednesday, March 1, 2006, James is laid to rest at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.  He leaves to cherish his memory a dear friend, Leonia Daniel, and others whose lives were touched by his presence.

 

James Allen Smith, Sr.

James Allen Smith, born the son  of Henry and Ardie Mar Smith, departed this life on June 8, 2006. James was born in Decatur, Mississippi and moved to Hattisburg at an early age.  James was a member of the Mount Olive Baptist Church as a young boy where he met and accepted The Lord Jesus Christ.  He attended Earl Travillion High School where he played football and graduated in 1962. Soon after, he moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he later met and married Gwendolyn on June 6, 1980. From that union, two children were born.  James was affectionately known as "Smitty". he loved his family, playing golf, and he loved his church. He joined Second Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in 1989, and he served faithfully as a Trustee and later a Deacon. In both capacities he was sincere and devoted and well loved. His career as an insurance agent spanned the majority of his adult life.  James is survived by his loving wife, Gwendolyn; his sons; Steven of New York and James Jr.; and his daughter, Kwanna L., both from Cleveland Ohio. He also leaves to cherish his memories two brothers, Charles (Diana) and Jerome; and two sisters, Mary Ann (Lloyd) and Olander (Mandel) of Cleveland, Ohio; three dear grandchildren, Jayden, Landen and Payton, and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and other loved ones.

 

LaWanda Smith Lowe (August 19, 1948 - March 26, 2006)

LaWanda Smith Lowe was born on August 19, 1948 in Lexington, Tennessee to Mary McHaney and J. Will Pearson.  She attended John Hay High School as well as Jane Addams High School and graduated from the Beatrice Beauty Academy in 1978.  LaWanda accepted Christ at a very early age at the St. Paul Baptist Church in Lexington, Tennessee.  At the time of her passing, she was a member of Beulah Missionary Baptist Church where she was serving as a member of the Mothers Board.  She had a great love for children and spent many years as a foster care provider.  LaWanda was first married to Mr. Ralph Smith.  She later married Mr. Robert Lowe and divorced in 1988.  On Sunday, March 26, 2006, she departed this life.  She is preceded in death by her parents;  a brother, James McHaney;  and brother-in-law, Paul Wadley.  Those left to mourn and to cherish her memory include seven children:  Diane Jones, Kendrick Smith, Kendra (Michael) Norris, Karen (Stephen) Farmer, Yolanda (Alan) Keaton;  two adopted children, Roneisha Wall Lowe and Ronald Wall Lowe;  niece, LaShawn Smith;  nephew, Donte Smith;  one sister, Argentra Wadley;  two brothers, Fred (Martha) Neal and Terence McClerkin;  thirteen grandchildren;  six additional nieces;  three additional nephews;  one great niece;  four great-nephews;  one great-great niece;  a best friend of many years, Ms. Jackie Williams;  other loving relatives and friends. 

 

Sallie L. Smith (December 5, 1920 - January 12, 2008)

Sallie Louise Smith was born on December 5. 1920 to Leon and Louise Frieson in Nashville, Tennessee being the youngest of four children.  She moved to Cleveland at the age of seven after the death of her parents to he raised by her aunt Sally Joyner.  Sallie attended the Cleveland Public Schools.  She was united in holy matrimony to Willie Floyd Smith in 1937.  She became a faithful member of St. Timothy Missionary Baptist Church where she served on the Nurses Guild.  She retired from Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital after many years of service as a dietary aide and she loved to travel.  Cherishing her memory are three daughters, Veronica (Nathan), Sally (Ronald) and Darnella; a son, Donald, and eighteen grandchildren, Tina Singer (Keith). Faye Clark, Pamela Dawson (David), Alonzo Clark, Benjamin Frieson, Iris Jones, Rosalind Stewart (Linwood), Tracy Bryan, Ronald Smith, Tenisha Hood, Gerald Simpson, Elaine Smith, Donald Smith Jr., Tammy Dudley, Christopher Smith, D’Andrea Smith, Richard Smith and James Smith.  Besides her mother and father, the late Leon and Louise Frieson, she was also preceded in death by her former husband Willie; two brothers, Carl and Hubert; a sister Clara; eldest son Gilbert and two daughters, Margaret and Darlene. She also leaves to rejoice in the Lord two daughters-in-law, May and Geraldine; several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

 

Walter Smith Jr. (May 3, 1929 - September 22, 2007)

Walter Smith, Jr. was born on May 3, 1929 in Cleveland, Ohio to the union of Walter and Johnnie Marie Smith.  He was the second child born to this union.  “Lil June” or “June Bug”, as he was affectionately known, attended Dike Kennard and graduated in 1947 from Central Senior High School.  Walter ran track for Kennard and Central (very good may we add) and he did a little boxing.  After leaving school he was hired by the City of Cleveland as a trash collector.  Also during his younger years, he worked as a redcap for the Pennsylvania Railroad.  On May 25, 1951, Walter entered the U.S. Army and was Honorably Discharged on April 10, 1953.   In 1965, Walter married Martha Wilson.  There were no children born to this union, but he was blessed with Sheldon and Otis Wilson.  After getting out of the army he went back to work for the City and he also worked for Metro (City Hospital).  Walter advanced to the position of Foreman with the City.  In 1985 he was recognized by then Mayor George Voinovich and then City Council President George Forbes for 40 years of service.  He was also a member of Union 1099 for over 50 years.  In 1987, Walter retired from both jobs.  During his senior years, Walter attended St. Martin De Porres where he was given the feeling of being “King of the House”.  St. Martin De Porres was like his second home and he couldn’t wait to get out of the house to get there.  Walter is preceded in death by his parents; two sons; and siblings Dorothy, Barbara and Robert.   Those left to mourn include his sons Roosevelt, Glenn and Shelton; his sisters Louise, Bernice, Delores and a brother Rudolph.  He also leaves to mourn many nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and dear friends.

 

Willie Edward Smith Jr. (July 16, 1948 - December 27, 2007)

Willie Edward Smith, Jr. was born on July 16, 1948 in St. Louis, Missouri to the union of Willie E. and Delores (nee Rosser) Smith, Sr.  He moved to Cleveland, Ohio shortly after completing his education and was later drafted into the United States Army where he was Honorably Discharged after serving for two years.  In 1974, Willie married Rosalind Leverette and to their union a daughter was born - Stacey.  Willie enjoyed painting, spending time with family and friends and, most of all, helping others.  He also loved to make people laugh with his tall tales and sarcastic sense of humor.  Willie’s purpose in this life was fulfilled and he departed this life on December 27, 2007.  He is preceded in death by his parents, one infant brother as well as by stepdaughter Kelly Leverette.  His memory will be forever cherished by his daughter, Stacey Smith; five grandchildren, Sher’Ron Smith, Michael Williams II, Kacey Wilson, Kailand Smith and Kellice Smith;  one sister, Sharon Smith;  two brothers, Ronald Smith and Reginald Perry;  nieces Ni’Ya (Steve), Wendy, Monisha and Samantha;  nephews, Maurice and “Little Ronnie”;  his loving and committed companion Ms. Janice Cummings;  as well as a host of other loving relatives and friends.

Willie Wilbert Snow, who was the youngest of eight children, was born on September 2, 1935 in Sharon Dale, Kentucky to the union of Robert and Melissa (nee Moore) Snow.  Willie was educated in Kentucky and, at a young age, accepted Christ into his life.  On October 31, 1952, at the age of 17, he entered the U.S. Army.  During his tour of duty, Willie earned a National Defense Service Medal as well as an Army of Occupation Medal (Germany) and, on February 17, 1956, was Honorably Discharged from military service.  Willie, who was employed at Republic Steel in Cleveland for many years, could best be described as a quiet, good mannered and friendly individual who loved his family.  On Friday, August 4, 2006, he departed this life.  He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters - Mattie Black and Janie McWilliams, and by two brothers - Booker Snow and Bennie Snow.  Those left to mourn and to cherish his memory include two children, Jeffrey Snow and Gary Elliott;  three sisters, Geline Jones, Bobbie Snow and Buna M. Hall;  brother-in-law, Carl McWilliams, Sr.;  former spouse, Deloris Snow;  as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

 

Lucille Speight (February 1, 1929 – November 23, 2004)

Lucille Speight was born on February 1, 1929 to the late Frank Stanton and Martha Jones of Panola, Alabama.  Husband Floyd Z. Speight and two daughters, Evelena Hill and Betty J. Coleman Hollis preceded her in death.  Lucille confesses Christ at a early age and joined Zion Valley Church in Panola, Alabama.  She later moved to Cleveland, Ohio where she became a member of Starlight Baptist Church of East Cleveland, Ohio under the leadership of Pastor Edward Small.  Lucille left Panola, Alabama in 1952 to live in Cleveland, Ohio with her husband, Floyd Speight.  She received her license as a LPN and worked and retired from St. Vincent Charity Hospital of Cleveland, Ohio.  Lucille loved going to church and especially loved her Sunday School Class.  She served faithfully on the Usher's Ministry and was elected President in 1957.  She was loved by everyone who met her.  She never stopped giving unconditional love to everyone.  Grandma will be missed by all.  Lucille departed life on Tuesday, November 23, 2004.  She leaves to cherish her memories a loving aunt, Mattie Gay and brother, William Lee (Johnnie Mae) Stanton of Edgewater, Alabama, two sisters, Elizabeth (Eugene) Shelton and Patricia Voorhees of Cleveland, Ohio.  A son Ernest (Jamie) Speight of Birmingham, Alabama, twenty grandchildren; Rhonda (Lamuntz), Jacqueline (Reginald), Wanda (Arthur), Everett (Lynarthia), Kenneth, Gregory (Connie), Coleman, Antonio, Alvin, Pamela (Gary), Roderick, Tomekia (Devon), Walter Lee, Floyd, Wayne, Jay, Muriel, Eunice, Ida, Bonnie.  A host of other relatives and friends.

 

Thomas Lloyd Spencer, Jr. (August 22, 1962 - May 1, 2004)

Thomas Lloyd Spencer, Jr. ("Noonie") was born on August 22, 1962 to Thomas and Nell Spencer.  He was the fifth of six children born to this union.  Thomas, who was baptized at an early age at Avon Avenue Baptist, was raised and educated in Cleveland, Ohio where he ran track for South High School.  Between 1979 and 1982, Thomas served a three (3) year tour of duty in the United States Army, achieving the rank of E4 Specialist.  During this time, he met and married Theresa Walker.  This union was blessed with two sons, Darrell Aikee Spencer and Thomas Lloyd Spencer, III.  After Thomas'   honorable discharge, the family moved to Florida where Thomas was employed as a mental health counselor.  Later, the family relocated to Cleveland, Ohio, where Thomas worked in building maintenance supervision.  Noonie, as he was affectionately known, was extremely gifted with his hands - being skilled in many of the building trades as well as in automotive service and maintenance.  With an ever ready entrepreneurial spirit, Thomas engaged in several ventures and loved playing challenging games of dominoes and spades with his friends.  After a lengthy illness, Thomas went to his final rest on Saturday May 1, 2004, surrounded by his family and friends, at Euclid General Hospital in Euclid, Ohio at the age of 41.  He is preceded in death by his father, Thomas Lloyd Spencer, Sr., as well as by his stepfather and friend, Clarence Gaither Wilson.  He leaves to mourn and know the joy and sorrow that comes with memories:  sons, Darrell Aikee Spencer (Kristy and grandson Dominick) and Thomas Lloyd Spencer, III, both of Maple Heights, Ohio;  former wife, Theresa Spencer of Maple Heights, Ohio;  mother, Mrs. Nell Spencer Wilson of Euclid, Ohio;  brother, Gregory Spencer of Cleveland, Ohio; sisters, Zandra (Herman) Mason and Cynthia Patterson, both of Cleveland, Ohio;  brother, Juan (Arthur) Spencer of Brooklyn, New York;  brother Robbie (Moniqua) Spencer of Columbus, Ohio;  uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousin;  as well as a host of other relatives and friends.  It is to be especially noted that in his later years, Thomas' devoted companion was Diane Alexander who remained with him until his passing.

 

Mary Betty Spicer (August 9, 1944 - March 2, 2008)

Mary Betty (nee Higgins) Spicer was born on August 9, 1944 to the union of Levi and Annie L. (nee Thompson) Higgins.  She was affectionately known as “May Betty.”  Mary was born and raised in the south and graduated from Washington High School in Caruthersville, Missouri. She married Thomas Spicer and from this union they became the parents of three beautiful daughters.  Mary lived in New York City before moving to Cleveland, Ohio in the mid 1970’s.  As an adult she was a licensed Cosmetologist for twenty-five years.  She retired in 1997 from the Cleveland Municipal School Board where she was employed as a Dietary Aide for seventeen years.  Mary’s favorite pastime was fishing with her best friend Doris.  She also loved good cooking and good eating, holiday gatherings with her family, and going to church.  She was a member of Blessed Hope Missionary Baptist Church and participated in the Senior’s Ministry.  She also enjoyed good singing, attending family reunions and spending time with her family.  Mary was a very funny lady who was well liked.  There will never be another Mary Spicer!  She was unforgettable and had a good and generous spirit.  She was loved and appreciated by many.  She lived a fulfilling life even though she had some medical complications, but through it all, she was determined to make the best of it.  On March 2, 2008, Mary went home to be with the Lord.  Those that have preceded her in death include her father Levi Higgins and her brother Ralph Anthony Higgins.  Those left to mourn her passing while cherishing her memory include her mother Annie Higgins; three daughters, Loretta Higgins, Brenda (Doug) Taylor and Zelda (Tyrone) Cromity;  her siblings, Annie Irene Harris, Frankie Jean (Paul) Williams, John Lee (Della) Higgins, Joe Thomas (Sandy) Higgins, Yvonne (Andrew) Williams, Freddie Alan (Alice) Higgins, Kenneth Bernard (Gwen) Higgins a.k.a Timmy and Forrest Gene Higgins; one sister-in-law, Ruby;  eleven grandchildren;  one great-grandchild; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

 

Patricia Joyce Sprigs (September 12, 1941 - June 10, 2004)

Patricia Joyce Sprigs was born on September 12, 1941 in East Chicago, Indiana to Percy Howard and Martha Miller.  She received her formal education in the East Chicago and Cleveland Public City School Systems.  She was last employed as a press operator at Magnesium Aluminum until she became disabled.  Patricia accepted Christ at an early age.  She was a very outgoing person who loved all types of music, social clubs, and outings.  Pat was well liked and loved by all that knew her.  She touched the hearts of all that crossed her path.  She nursed those who were in need of such.  Pat had an "open door policy" to all.  She leaves to cherish her memories: children, Duane Howard of Cleveland, Raoul Cloud of Cleveland, Soncerceria Cloud of Cleveland, Terry (Lee) Williams of Cleveland, Diane (Robbie) Hartman of Cleveland, Leanna Cloud of Kent, Ohio, Ovise Sprigs, Jr. of Cleveland, James Cloud, Jr. of Cleveland, Kenneth (Reba) Cloud of Cleveland, and Raphael Cloud of Cleveland; mother, Martha (Robert) Fell of Cleveland; father, Percy Howard of Gary, Indiana; brothers, Robert Howard and James Howard, both of Gary, Indiana, and Calvin Drake of Cleveland; sisters, Jeanette (James) Drake of Maple Heights, Ohio and Renee Fell of Cleveland; uncle, James Miller; aunt, Penny Williams; sixteen (16) grandchildren; two (2) great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and two very special friends, Loretta and Linda.

 

Edna L. Spivey (September 27, 1936 - December 13, 2007)

Edna L. Spivey was born on September 27, 1936 in Akron, Ohio to the loving union of Neal and Lula (nee Bryant) Harris.  She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age. 

Edna graduated from Central Howard High School in Akron, Ohio.  In 1954, Edna married Calvin M. Spivey and moved to Cleveland, Ohio and to their union four children where born - Brenda, Calvin, Michael and Theresa.  Edna had a quest for knowledge and furthered her education at Cuyahoga Community College where she studied Social Services.  Edna was a dedicated worker at Cuyahoga County Children and Family Services as a Case Worker for twenty-seven years.  Edna was a hard working, energetic, free-hearted, inspiring and witty woman!  She loved playing cards, enjoyed being around people, had a lot of friends and was very helpful to others.  She was a high class lady that was always strict with her appearance as well as the appearance of others!   On December 13, 2007, Edna went home to be with the Lord.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Neal and Lula Harris;  siblings, Ethel Sibley, Alice Harris, Ted Harris, Clifford Harris and T.J. Harris;  as well as one grandchild, Antonio.  Those left to mourn while cherishing her memory include four children, Brenda (Glenn Shearer) Spivey of Cleveland, OH,  Calvin (Linda) Spivey of Cleveland, OH, Michael Spivey of East Cleveland, OH and Theresa Spivey of Euclid, OH;  siblings, Mary (Reverend Willie) James, Hazel Harris, and John Henry Harris, all of Akron, OH;  eleven grandchildren, Davon, Ebony, Marcus, Desiree, Twilla, Antoinette, Shatema, Nolan, Dominic, Tiffany and Terria; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives and friends.

 

Shelby A. Spivey (March 7, 1949 - November 2, 2007)

Shelby Ardella Spivey (nee Abercrombie) was born on March 7, 1949 in Cleveland, Ohio to O.T. and Jessie (nee Wheeler) Abercombie.  She was the only child born to this union.  In 1967, Shelby graduated from John F. Kennedy Senior High School in Cleveland, Ohio. In the same year as her graduation, Shelby began working for Ohio Bell and later retired in 2001 after thirty four years of service.  In 1973, Shelby met and married James E. Spivey and to this union two daughters were born - Kimberly Dawn and Janice Marie Spivey.  Later in life, she became an honorary aunt to R-Riana Spivey and her children - JaKiya and Ricardo (Reco) Jackson.  Shelby was a light that shined brightly in the lives she touched.  She was known for her brutal honesty, her quick witted sense of humor as well as her generous nature.  Although Shelby was the only child, she developed a lasting sisterhood with Evelyn Spivey and their unique bond lasted well over twenty years.  She will be greatly missed but never forgotten.   On Friday, November 2, 2007 at 6:30pm Shelby went home to be with our Father in eternal peace.  Those who have preceded her in death include her parents and one grandchild, Mercedes.  Those that are left to cherish her loving memories include her two daughters, Kimberly Dawn (Dwayne Baker) and Janice Marie (Michael McKenzie);  ten grandchildren - D’Vaughnte’, Dynasti, Yazmin, Shelvonna, D’Aughnte’, Lexus, Tre’Vaughnte’, Tyreke, D’Angelus and Delamondre’;  one sister in Christ, Evelyn Spivey;  ex-husband, James E. Spivey;  as well as a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, adopted family members and friends.

 

Aaron Rushon Steele (March 26, 1984 - May 8, 2007)

Aaron Rushon Steele was born on March 26, 1984 to Hugh and Bertha Steele in Cleveland, Ohio.  Aaron departed this life on Tuesday, May 8, 2007.  Aaron began his educational career at St. Gregory the Great in South Euclid, Ohio.  He entered Benedictine High School in the fall of 1999 and later transferred to Lutheran East High School, where he received his diploma in 2002.  After graduating from high school, Aaron attended the University of Toledo for two years and later attended The Ohio Technical College in Cleveland where he earned a certificate in paint and auto body repair.  After obtaining his certificate, Aaron was employed by the Regional Transit Authority.  Aaron had a heart of gold and was always willing to give to anyone in need.  Aaron lived by the motto, “The good you do to others always come back to you.”  He liked working with his hands and especially loved airbrushing, drawing and painting.  He had a special fondness for children and aspired to be a father one day.  Aaron’s love of his family was shown in the care and dedication he took in caring for his father.  He was dearly loved and will be sorely missed.  Aaron leaves to cherish his memory his devoted parents, Bertha and Hugh; brothers Hugh Jr. and Maurice (Tracy); sisters Veniece, Tonya (Kevin) and Ashley; a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and a multitude of cousins and friends.

 

Cassandra Lynn Steele (February 16, 1954 - October 27, 2003)

Cassandra Lynn Steele, aka “Squeaky”, age 49, entered into rest on Monday, October 27, 2003.  She was born February 16, 1954 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Edward and Doris Steele.  She attended John Adams High School and furthered her education at Cuyahoga Community College.  Over the years, Cassandra held various jobs in the Cleveland community and was most recently employed by Tops Friendly Market.  On October 17, 1986, Cassandra was baptized at the Glenville Seventh Day Adventist Church in Cleveland where she has remained a faithful member.  Cassandra enjoyed playing cards and Pokeno, but, most of all, she enjoyed talking, laughing and joking around with her family and friends.  She was always going out of her way to help others.  She has cared for two nieces, cared for her father until his passing in 2001, and, at the time of her passing, she was raising three grandchildren.  Words cannot adequately express how truly and deeply Cassandra’s presence will be missed.  She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Victoria Steele, and one child, Rasheda Steele.  She will remain a treasure in the hearts of her beloved partner, Paul Jenkins of Cleveland; three children, Erik Steele, Kashema Steele and Keenya (Emanuel) Thornton, all of Cleveland;  two sisters, Jackie Steele and Toi Steele both of Cleveland;  two brothers, Edward (Diane) Steele, III and Joseph Steele, II both of Cleveland;  nine grandchildren and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

 

Geraldine Arizona Steele (April 1, 1923 - December 15, 206)

Geraldine Arizona Steele was born on April 1, 1923 in Friendsville, Tennessee to the union of Hugh and Della (nee McGee) Baker.  In Tennessee, she received her education and accepted Christ into her life.  Geraldine met and married Henry Steele and to their union seven children were born.  In 1964, the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio where she worked in housekeeping at The Illuminating Company.  She was also very much family oriented and her home was the center of family activity.  She will surely be missed.  On Friday December 15, 2006, Geraldine departed this life.  She is preceded in death by her parents, by her husband Henry, as well as by her children Mildred Hackler and Wesley.  Those left to mourn and to cherish her memories include sons, Hugh (Bertha), Alfred, Henry Jr., Kenneth and Roy (Susie);  a sister, Caroline Baker;  sisters-in-law, JoEvelyn Liggett and Marquerite Steele;  fifteen grandchildren;  sixteen great-grandchildren;  two great-great-grandchildren;  and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

 

Howard L. Steele (May 7, 1955 - November 26, 2006)

 

Wesley Floyd Steele (May 7, 1955 - April 13, 2006)

Wesley Floyd Steele was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on May 7, 1955 to the late Henry W. Steele and Geraldine Steele.  He was the youngest of the seven children born to this union.  Wesley loved the Lord and he accepted Christ at an early age.  He attended Cleveland Church of Christ Citadel of Hope until his illness.  He was educated through the Cleveland Public School System and he attended Cuyahoga Community College.  He received specialized training in Dietary and Food Service, and he received his specialized certification from the State of Ohio.  Always a hard worker, Wesley served as Food Service Supervisor at the PVA Circle of Homes for a number of years until his illness.  Wesley was a family-oriented person.  He embraced his family and friends and tried to keep in contact with those who lived in and out of the city.  He served as a caregiver for his father until his death and helped with the care of his mother until his own death.  Wesley went from grace to reward on Thursday, April 13, 2006 at the Huron Road Medical Center after a lengthy illness.  He is preceded in death by his brother, Marion Henry, and his sister, Mildred Hackler.  Left to cherish fond memories are his mother, Geraldine Steele; six brothers, Hugh (Bertha) Wilson, Alford Lenord, Henry William, Kenneth Glenn, Roy (Susie) Anthony and Norman McKissick of Knoxville, Tennessee; uncles, Clyde Steele, Harvey Steele and Carson C. Steele; aunts, Caroline Baker, JoEvelyn Liggett and Marguerite Steele; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; as well as his close friends, Mrs. Porter, Anita, Tyrone Wiggins, and his best friend for over 40 years, Leonard R. Dixon.

 

Aaron Lewis Stephens (October 2, 2003 - December 30, 2003)

 

Gertie Stewart-Dew

"The Life and Times of the King's Kid".  God knew that He could Bank on Gertie Mae to be a good Stewart and Dew the things He asked of her.  She began this earthly journey on January 5, 1934 in Cleveland, Ohio as the only child born to the late James Anderson and Ruth Azeala (Gaines) Banks. A self proclaimed “Original Girl in the Hood,” Gertie had some difficulties in her early life, BUT GOD, in His infinite wisdom places her in a foster home where she was under the direction of a Christian Foster Mother who was a Methodist Evangelist.  Although Gertie was educated predominately in The Cleveland Public School System, while attending John Hay High School she received a scholarship from the Methodist church to attend the Boarding School in Georgia, Hosey Cobb Institute. After graduation she remained in Georgia attending Payne College on a basketball scholarship.  Gertie accepted Christ at an early age and joined the C.M.E. Church under the pastorate of her foster brother, Rev. Thomas Thorton. She later joined the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. David C. Calvert. While at Mount Pleasant she sand in the choir, taught Sunday School, was active in the Mission and Baptist Training Union. She united with the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. Leroy Kelly. “Mama Dew” as she was affectionately called, did many things at Mount Olive. Some of her activities included, teaching and assisting in Sunday School, being a Departmental Superintendent of the Sunday School, Singing in the Gospel Chorus, Coordinating the Male Chorus, being a Hattie Jackson Guild Leader, a Church office volunteer, a member of the 50 Plus Seniors and S.E.A.S.O.N.S. Bereavement Ministry… “Mama Dew” taught Mission circles, Vacation Bible School and Moody Bible Classes. She Supervised Summer Lunch Programs at Mount Olive and was one of the Supervisors in the Y.O.O.F. Summer Youth Works Program, but, her passion was always about giving and doing for “the least of these”. In this spirit she founded and was the Leader of Mount Olive’s Prison Ministry Team.

 

James Stewart (August 27, 1925 - July 26, 2004)

"Prince" James Stewart was born on August 27, 1925 in Midway, Alabama to the union of Minnie Graves and Eugene Stewart.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by siblings Eugene Stewart, Jr., Hosea Stewart and Ardella Taylor.  James was educated in Cleveland, Ohio and at the age of 17 enlisted in the U.S. Navy.  After serving for four years and traveling the world, he was Honorably Discharged on May 28, 1946.  In 1947 he met the love of his life, Zelma Brown.  While they were engaged, James played drums in the hottest clubs of that time in the Cleveland area.  He and Zelma subsequently married on September 21, 1948.  Ready to start a family, James quit the club scene in order to obtain a steady job as a meat cutter at Fisher Foods where he became a Teamster.  He remained with the company for 30 years until its closing.  James then took a job in maintenance at St. Aloysius Church until his retirement in the 1990's.  James loved to horseback ride in his spare time.  He also loved to listen to his jazz - at times pulling out the drums to keep his skills fresh.  James was a religious man.  He and his wife Zelma were members at St. Aloysius Catholic Church for 49 years.  James leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife of 56 years, Zelma; daughter Glynis (Walter) Morris, Jr. of Cleveland, OH; son James R. (Linda) Stewart of Morristown, TN; brother Eddy Stewart of Cleveland, OH; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

 

Shuler M. Stewart, Jr. (March 3, 1934 - June 18, 2006)

Shuler M. Stewart, Jr., “Pap”, was born March 3, 1934 in Cross, Arkansas to the union of Shuler Stewart and Learlee Biven Stewart.  At the early age of 7, Shuler was baptized in Arkansas.  He also attended classes at Whitmore Jr. High School in Cross, Arkansas. In 1954 Shuler married the late Jamesina Clark.  Two children were born to this union which later ended in divorce.  Shuler, who was active in the community, supported his children as a loyal and dedicated employee for over 50 years as a construction worker.  Shuler was an outgoing, diversified person with many interests some of which included everything from outdoor adventure to cooking.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping out.  His favorite food was cabbage and pigtails and his favorite desert was pecan pie.  Shuler was a happy person and he wanted others around him to be happy as well.  He was always smiling and laughing and ready to help - even if it meant giving his last.  On Sunday June 18, 2006 Shuler went home to be with the Lord.  Loved ones that have preceded him include his parents, his stepfather – Senior Whitfield, a sister - Lois Webbs, a daughter - Olivia Stewart, as well as Paul Cook and Willie Hudson.  Those left to cherish his memory include his four children, Mary C. Hollins of Cleveland, Ohio, LaTell A. (Deborah) Stewart of South Carolina, Rebecca Stewart and Ben Stewart, both of Cleveland, Ohio;  children he helped raise, Aubrey, Lorene (Thelton) Winns, Linda (Charles) Clark, Doris McGhee, Jerry McGhee, Joyce (Woody) Blackmon and Tommy Miller;  two sisters, Katherine (William Jr.) Gamble and Emma Louise Malone, both of Memphis, Tennessee;  one brother, Robert (Deborah) Watts of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida;  grandchildren, Andre, Vanya, Andrea, LaTell II, and Jermaine as well as an additional twenty-five grandchildren;  great-grandchildren, Deandre, Amari and Jermaine Jr. as well as an additional seventeen great-grandchildren.  He also leaves a host of other nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends.

 

Odessa Still (June 2, 1920 - March 21, 2008)

Odessa Still was born June 2, 1920 in Birmingham, Alabama;  the daughter of Hattie and Monroe Washington (both deceased).  Odessa confessed Christ as her personal Savior, at an early age.  She has resided in Cleveland, Ohio since the age of 15 years old.  She attended public schools of Cleveland, Ohio;  and was a product of Cleveland's Central High School.  Her membership at Holy Trinity Baptist Church, began under the pastorate of her cousin, Dr. Henry J. Payden, Sr., and faithfully continued under present Pastor, Rev. Chelton C. Flanagan.  Her Christian character is known and mentored by many who knew her.  Her marriage, December 24, 1945, to William "Skippy" Still in Cleveland, Ohio was blessed for 50 years.  She and her husband "Skippy" (deceased), initially embraced the air waves of Cleveland and surrounding areas, the first Sunday in August 1959.  Heard for many years over, AM Radio Station WABQ from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. each Saturday; ministering Gospel music to a vast listening audience, encouraging the sick and shut-in; and informing listeners of community services and activities.  A profound legend in the art of broadcasting, Odessa, received local and national recognition, earning the title as, "Queen of The Airwaves", among her constituents.  Her heavenly scheduled flight departed, Good Friday, March 21, 2008, 12:05am from Willow Park Nursing Facility, Cleveland, Ohio.  The legacy of this beautiful Christian Woman, member of the former Deep River Songbirds and Fair Promoters;  Gospel Music Workshop of America; National Radio Announcers Guild;  Ladies of Gospel Founder, Humanitarian, Tour Organizer, Gospel Emcee, Broadcasters Hall of Fame Inductee with honors too numerous to mention, will be forever treasured by;  her nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.  (Two brothers and her sister preceded her in death).

 

Frank Simon Stitts (November 8, 1936 - March 4, 2004)

Frank Simon Stitts was born on November 8, 1936 in Jackson, Tennessee.  He was the first son of the late Oliver Lee and Queen Esther Stitts.  Two brothers, Ronald and Don Stitts also preceded him in death.  God called Frank home on Thursday, March 4, 2004.  Frank completed his primary and secondary education in Jackson, Tennessee.  He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1953, where he reached the rank of Radioman Second Class.  He was honorably discharged in 1957, and moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he earned his FCC License in Radio School.  Frank attended Home Baptist Church in Jackson. In Cleveland, Frank was an active member St. Aloysius from 1961-1973.  From 1973 until his homegoing, Frank was active and very instrumental in the growth and positive development of St. Adalbert Catholic Church.  Frank met Dorothy Powers in 1958.  They became friends and were joined in holy matrimony in 1962, and to that union three children were born.  Frank briefly worked at Benjamin Rose hospital and the Cleveland Transit System.  He retired from the United States Postal Service with over 25 years of service.  Frank’s involvement in the community and the church was extensive and commendable.  He held leadership positions in the Black Lay Catholic Caucus of Cleveland (president), St. Adalbert P.T.U. (President for three terms), the Black Catholic Advisory Board (president), the Catholic Commission on Community Action (vice president and treasurer), and the Catholic Interracial Council (treasurer).  He also served on the Board of Directors for the National Office of Black Catholics, the African and Native American Grant Board, and the Parent Advisory Board of Beaumont School.  He was also a member of the Desegregation Committee and the Vocations Committee for the Diocese of Cleveland, the Planning Committee of Beaumont School, the Glenville Catholic Congress, the Black Catholic Youth Input, and the Parish Councils of St. Aloysius and St. Adalbert Churches.  He was also a collection counter for St. Adalbert, and did immeasurable volunteer work for the church.  Frank was considered a surrogate father and mentor to many.  His patience, understanding, sense of humor, and overall character will be sorely missed.   Frank’s service to mankind was honored with the 2001 Archbishop James P. Lyke African-American Male Image Award.  Frank was an avid golfer.  He played in many tournaments and was a member of the Divots Golf Club.  He also enjoyed cooking (especially on the grill), traveling, playing the lottery, dining out, and he loved football and the Cleveland Browns.  Frank leaves to cherish his memory and celebrate his life his loving wife Dorothy Frances; two daughters, Doria Kathleen Stitts (Kathy), and Karen Denise Stitts of Charlotte, North Carolina; one son, Michael David Stitts of Cleveland; four sisters, Bettye Jones (Wilton), Beverly Johnson (Jeff), and Dorelia Sharp (John) all from Cleveland, and Carolyn Brown (Ralph) of West Covina, California; one brother James of Jackson, Tennessee, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. 

 

Foster L. Strong (June 24, 1939 - October 22, 2007)

Foster L. Strong was born on June 24, 1939 in Huntsville, Alabama to the loving union of Reuben Strong, Sr. and Emma Sue Petty. Foster was baptized at an early age at Hopewell Baptist Church in New Market, Alabama.  In addition, he attended the Cousel Training High School in Huntsville, Alabama and later married Katie Mae Strong who is now deceased.  Foster moved to Cleveland, Ohio in I967 and was employed by Cleveland Trust Co.  He was later employed at ABM Building Maintenance.  Foster was also an entrepreneur and was gifted in painting, plumbing and carpentry.  In 1974, Foster was joined in Holy Matrimony to Peggy Blackshire and to this union three sons were born.  Foster also joined the Greater Faith Baptist Church family under the pasturage of late Rev. Leon Lawrence.  Foster was a wonderful neighbor and he was a great fan of the Cleveland Indians.  He loved to go fishing and he also loved to drink McDonald’s coffee!  Foster L. Strong departed this life on October 22, 2007 at 10:20pm at the Cleveland Clinic Hospital. Those who have preceded him in death include his father; brother Alton Smith; sister Betty Joyce Kelso; and brother-in-law Ray Ashby.  He leaves to mourn and to cherish his memory, six sons, Jerrod Foster Strong, Jason Claude Strong, Darrick Reuben Strong, Wallace Blackshire, David Blackshire, and Timothy Shawn Blackshire; his mother Mrs. Emma Sue Petty; his ex-wife Peggy Muhammad; seven brothers, Curtis (Patricia) Strong, David Strong, Percy Lee Smith, Reuben Strong, Jr., Robert (Carolyn) Strong, W.D. (Jimmie) Strong, and Willie Smith; five sisters, Clara Bell Smith, Ester Petty, Leavis Ashby, Ozell (Troy) Dunlap and Stella Galloway; thirteen grandchildren;  and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives and friends.

 

James Perry Strong (May 9, 1947 - January 8, 2005)

James Perry Strong, the oldest of three children born to the late James Clarke and Ruthie Mae Strong, was born on May 9, 1947 in Shelby, North Carolina.  At the age of six, the family relocated to Cleveland, Ohio.  James, affectionately known as "Jimmy" or "Strong", attended Giddings and Charles Dickens Elementary School, Alexander Hamilton Junior High, and Max Hayes Trade School where he pursued his dream of becoming an automotive mechanic and having his own body shop.  The family united with the Second Tabernacle Baptist Church where Jimmy accepted Christ for himself under the pastor ship of the late Thomas Edison Chapman.  Jimmy sang in the choir and was a part of Boy Scout Troop 555.  After graduation, Jimmy was drafted into the U.S. Army and served his country in that capacity for four years in the Vietnam War.  Returning from the war, Jimmy met and fell in love with Carolyn McGahee and the two were united in holy matrimony.  From this union two sons were born, Lorac and James, both of whom he adored.  Jimmy also had a baby girl, Corinne, who, being a girl, melted his heart.  Jimmy began working for the Pepsi Bottling Company where he remained until an accident left
