Delores Underwood (December
13, 1952 - August 23, 2006)
Delores (Lois) Underwood was born December 13, 1952 in
Louisville, Kentucky to Doris Jones and William Nothington (preceded
her in death). Her family relocated to Cleveland, Ohio in 1965. In 1971, her
only child, Yolanda Underwood, was born. Lois accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized by
Pastor W.C. Crayton at Second Lakeview Baptist Church. She rejoined
Second Lakeview in 2000. Lois was educated in the Cleveland Public School System and
graduated from Cleveland Extension High School in 1972. She became
a certified Nursing Assistant in 1981 from Automation Academy. She
furthered her education, graduating with honors from Stratford
Career Institute in Rehabilitation Counseling. Lois worked as a Nursing Assistant for more than twenty (20)
years. She volunteered at Saint Vincent Charity Hospital as a Detox
Counselor for three years. She was employed for the past three years
at Fairview Hospital. Lois was especially gifted in writing and had a passion for
reading. Her hobbies were shopping and collecting teddy bears and
she had a zest for roses. Lois departed this life on Wednesday, August 23, 2006. She
leaves to cherish her memory, mother Doris Jones; daughter Yolanda
Underwood; grandson De’Mone Frisco; two sisters, Frances Jones,
Susie Jones-Pollard (Jerry); three brothers, Larry Underwood
(Ethel), Nate Jones (Jackie), Ed Jones (Pat); four nieces, Monique
Underwood, Wanetta Jones, Toquana Jones, Theresa Jones; one
great-nephew Demetrius Jones; and close friends Rochelle Robinson,
Tina Francis, Keith Champion, and a host of other relatives and
friends.
Maurice Underwood
(December 23, 1930 - March 31, 2006)
Maurice Underwood was born December 23, 1930 to Frank
and Minnie Maude Underwood in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the second
youngest of eight children. He accepted Christ at an early age. He
attended Miles Standish Elementary, Empire Junior High & East
Technical High School. After high school, Maurice joined the army in
1948 where he received and honorable discharge with decorations in
1952. In 1955, on July 25, through the marital union of
Maurice and Jerry Dean was born Maurice Lee Underwood, Jr. Jerry
Dean preceded him in death in 1992. After his divorce to Jerry Dean Maurice moved to
Chicago, Illinois where he met Annie Laura McKenzie. He and Annie
Laura had two sons, David Cordell born May 9, 1969 and Creston
Maurice born September 9, 1970. Shortly thereafter he returned to Cleveland and in
1973 he married Willie Mae. Two years later on October 17, 1975 they
had a daughter, Nedra Lashaun. Willie Mae preceded him in death in
2004. Maurice was a loving and caring father and
grandfather who loved life. He enjoyed many favorite pastimes
including playing cards, visiting with family and friends and
watching his favorite team The Cleveland Indians play baseball.
After retiring Maurice returned to Miles Standish Elementary School
where he worked as an aide for many years providing a variety of
assistance to staff and students. He also enjoyed the added pleasure
of spending everyday with his grandchildren as they were students at
the school for four years. Maurice loved to sing and carry a tune. He was
lovingly known to break out into song on any given occasion. He also
loved to spend mornings at Cory United Methodist Church's Senior
Program where he participated in various activities with friends and
acquaintances. Maurice entered into eternal rest on Friday, March
31, 2006 at 10:00p.m. at VA Medical Center. He leaves to celebrate
his life his son Maurice Lee Underwood Jr. of Cleveland, his sons
David and Creston McKenzie of Chicago, his only daughter Nedra
Benson of Cleveland, son-in-law Freddie Benson Jr. of Cleveland,
daughter-in-law Jennifer McKenzie of Chicago, stepdaughters Ruby,
Olivia and Linda who preceded him in Death in 1995, grandchildren
Sheila, Jerrel Maurice, Jamilah Aliyah, Freddie III, Marcus Leshaun,
Elijah Kevon of Cleveland and Emma Leigh Annie of Chicago. Preceded
him in death are his brothers Andrew, Cornelius, Thomas, James,
Robert, Benjamin and his only sister Helen. He also leaves a host of
family and friends to cherish his sweet memory.
