Paul Albert Wadley (December 6, 1939 - March 30, 2005)

Paul Wadley was born on December 6, 1939 to the late Prentice (Simon) Wadley and Hattie Harmon Wadley.  Paul attended school in Peoria, Illinois and in Lexington, Tennessee.  In January of 1963, he was united in marriage with Argentra Melton and in March of 1963 he was drafted into the U.S. Army.  During his tour of duty, Paul was a truck driver, an occupation he continued after his honorable discharge.  He was a truck driver for EBP for 5 years, Boyas Excavating for 25 years and Terrace Construction for 5 years.  He was also a CB operator for over 25 years under the handle "7up".  On March 30, 2005, he departed this life.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one sister, Elsie Rosetta Wadley.  Paul leaves to mourn his passing, wife Argentra Wadley;  a son, Paul Wadley, Jr.;  a daughter, Traci Wadley;  three brothers, Prentice (Renee) Wadley, Darwin (Alfreda) Parker, and Sheldon (Susie) Parker;  four grandchildren, Katrina Starks, Paul Gall, Kelvin Wadley and Prentice Gall;  one uncle, Isaac (Wylie) Harmon;  one aunt, Alma (Vernon) Bacon;  one great-grandchild, Tayonna Wadley;  and a host of other loving relatives and good friends.

Shanohn Walcott (January 10, 1976 - January 31, 2007)

Shanohn was born on January 10, 1976 at University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio to Gregory Allen and Sheron Lynn Walcott.  He was the youngest of two children with Teran being his older sibling.  Shanohn attended Charles Elliot, Louis Agassiz and Garfield Computer Tech middle and elementary schools.  He auditioned and was accepted into the Cleveland School of the Arts where he majored in music.  He joined several school organizations such as the Jazz Ensemble, the Mass Choir, and the Just Chilling Club.  Under the direction of Mr. Woods, they performed all over the city and at church functions as well as for the Mayor.  Although he had a love for music and singing, he expressed an interest in computer technology and eventually enrolled in Bryant and Stratton to pursue it.  Shanohn worked in several fields such as retail sales and restaurants where he held positions as manager and assistant manager as well as crew leader.  He also had worked for Ace Cab Company and Geauga Lake Amusement Park.  Shanohn confessed Christ at an early age and on June 3, 1984 was baptized at Green Grove Baptist Church under the pastorage of the late Rev. L. J. Howard.  When we think of Shanohn, we think of a kind young man who was well liked among his peers and co-workers and well loved among his family.  He was funny, personable and always upbeat even through his illness.  Shanohn was an avid card player with friends.  He also collected movies and loved to travel and swim.  Being very sociable, he enjoyed cooking for his friends and dressing very fashionable.  Shanohn was also a casual bowler and loved to read.  On January 31, 2007, Shanohn departed this life and is preceded in death by his grandmother, Hattie Torbert, and by his uncle, Eric Frank Jennings.  Those left to cherish his memories include his loving mother, Sheron;  dear brother, Teran;  father, Gregory Walcott;  grandmother, Phyllis Thomas;  aunts, Brenda Joy Torbert and Francine Jennings of Cleveland, Ohio;  uncles, Gentleman Torbert Jr. and Tyron Torbert of Cleveland, Ohio;  as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

 

Eddie J. Walker (June 30, 1932 - July 8, 2007)

Eddie James Walker was born on June 30, 1932 in Columbus, Mississippi to the union of E. Walker and Jimmie Barnes.  Eddie accepted Christ at an early age and joined Brick Church in Columbus, Mississippi.  Eddie worked as a cook for Mississippi State College for Women for over seventeen years until he became disabled.  He moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1971 where he battled multiple illnesses until the Lord called him home on Sunday, July 8, 2007.  Preceding him in death are his parents and three sisters, Vanice Armistead, Betty Armistead and Linda Barnes.  Eddie leaves to mourn his passing two sons, Antonio Moore of Columbus, Mississippi and Mack (Arlene) Dent of Tupelo, Mississippi; three grandchildren, Stefen, Briana and Kyla; one sister, Barbara Harris of Cleveland, Ohio; three nieces; seven nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

 

Ernestine Walker (June 21, 1951 - April 26, 2007)

Ernestine Walker of Cleveland, Ohio went home to be with the Lord on April 26, 2007 in her 55th year.  She was born in Columbus, Georgia but relocated to Saginaw, Michigan.  Shortly after she met and married her beloved ex-husband C.T. Walker, Sr.  She is the loving mother of four children Kimberly (Sharwone) Beatty, Shirley (Garth) Scott, Pastors CT (Denise) Walker Jr., LaCres (Demetrius) Taylor all of Cleveland.  Also survived by her are 16 grandchildren Deandre (Brenda), Christopher, Brian, Jessica, Ernestine Lester, Jerell, Derell, Terell, Gabrielle, Garth Scott, Wendor, David, Darron (deceased), Aaron, LaCres, James Moncado, Quartez Walker and Urshala Mackey-Walker;  eight great grandchildren, Ireisha, Christiana, Tradariena, Deandre, AnnMarie, Brian, and LaMarieana;  three nieces, eight nephews, three aunts Eunice McClure, Kathryn Sudden and Id Stewart.  She was pre-deceased by both parents, and five other siblings.  She leaves behind a host of cousins, friends and several God children who called her mom.  She will be missed dearly.  Ernestine worked in the Home Health Field for over 12 years.  She was a Faithful member of Cornerstone Ministries Church here in Cleveland where she served as Founder and Apostle.

 

Jernel James Walker (May 12, 1982 - December 2, 2006)

Jernel James Walker, affectionately known as Jay, was born on May 12, 1982 in Cleveland, Ohio to James and Gwendolyn Walker.  Jernel, who was educated in the East Cleveland School system, loved playing baseball as a young boy.  He loved to have fun, to hang out with his friends and to simply enjoy life.  He also loved shopping for today’s fashions and was always getting himself a new outfit.  His shoes were always clean and he really cared about how he looked.  Not only did he have one mother, his sister became his mother and they were very close.  She always watched out for Jernel and did not want anyone to mess with him.  If you did, you would have to deal with Shanda.  Jernel always had a smile on his face and, if you said something he didn’t like, he would just look at you with a little grin on his face.  He would never say a word, though, and was always respectful to his family.  When the family would have a cookout, he’d always be there.  He would sometimes park in his grandmother’s driveway - watching the house while they were sleeping.   When his mother started her church, he was her first drummer.  On the Sunday before his passing, Jay visited the church and, giving his mother great joy, gave his life back to the Lord saying that he “was tired.”  On Saturday, December 2, 2006, Jernel departed this life.  Family members who have preceded him in death include great-grandparents, Stone Walker, Florence Walker, Georgia Craig;  grandfather, Willie J. Edwards, Sr.;  aunt, Linda Esperance;  and uncle, Earnest McClain, Jr.  Those left to mourn and to cherish his memory include his parents, James (Wanda) Walker and Gwendolyn (Michael) Taylor;  one daughter, N’Zhuri Au-Shay K. Hawkins, who turned two on the same day of his passing;  sister, Rashanda Walker;  brother, Rashad Walker;  step sister, Tasya Tyus;  step brother, Raheem Tyus;  grandparents, John and Mary Walker and Mary Edwards;  aunts, Florence (Robert) Ross, Burma McClain, Qwendolyn (Harry) Harris and Sherry Booker;  uncles, Robert (Andrene) Tift and Willie (Yvonne) Edwards;  special friend, Martina Jones;  and a host of loving relatives and friends.  He may be gone but his memory will live on in our hearts.  He’s resting in the arms of Jesus now and we know that we will see him again.

 

Robert Walker III

Robert Walker III, born on September 13, 1930 in Newbern, Alabama, was the youngest of four Sons from the union of Robert Jr. and Azzielean Walker. His parents and three brothers Lee Arthur, Sebb, and Eugene preceded him in death.  Bayboy, as he was affectionately called by family members, accepted CHRIST at an early age, and was educated in the Alabama public school system.  In 1950 he served in the U. S. Army as a medic during the Korean war. While on furlough in the Summer of 1951, a mutual friend introduced him to the love of his life, Bessie Ann. In 1952 Robert was honorably discharged from the Army and relocated to Cleveland, Ohio.  On June 21, 1953 Robert and Bessie Ann were united in Holy Matrimony. To this union three children were born. For 54 years he remained a faithful, devoted and loving husband, father and Papa who lived for the happiness and satisfaction of his family.  Robert was employed by the Shaker Heights City School District, as Custodial Maintenance Supervisor for many years, where he received numerous certificates and awards for his performance, before retiring in 1992.  Known fondly as Bob by friends and Papa by his grandchildren, Bob truly enjoyed the company of his two closest friends Willis Adams Sr., his fishing buddy and travel partner Sam Hunter, along with their wives. His favorite pastime was hitting the golf course every other day with golfing buddies Ernie, Herbert, Dave and Tim. Robert was also a member of several social organizations..  He leaves to cherish his memory, a loving, devoted wife Bessie Ann, three children Shelia Bates, Meetri Walker, and Paul Walker, one son-in-law Tim Bates, six grandchildren Teriesha Howard (Rayshean Sr.), Robert Bates, Swazine Walker, Tia Bates, Paula Walker, and Paul Walker Jr. Six great- grandchildren Rayshean Howard Jr., Tre’sean Howard, Destinee Bates, Tayvon Austin, Jeremiah Walker and Rayana Howard; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

 

Donte L. Wall (June 3, 1977 - July 21, 2006)

Donte Lamar Wall was born on June 3, 1977 to the proud parents of John Tillman and Elizabeth (Goldie) Wall. He departed this life suddenly on July 21, 2006 in Pine Knots, Kentucky. Donte was jovial, loveable person, He graduated high school in 1996 from Riverview High School. Donte leaves to mourn his passing both of his parents; three daughters, Dontasia, Eljabria, Doneisha; two sons Davonte and Donte Jr.; a sister Michelle; a brother Darnell; a special cousin Ronnie; three nephews - Mik-Mik, MyQuan and Tayvon; two aunts, Connie and Charlotte; and an uncle Kendall. He also leaves grandparents and additional siblings in Memphis, Tennessee; other relatives, many friends and special companions - Casey Austin, Michelle Campbell, Keisha Ray and Stacy.

 

Jame Wallace (June 6, 1930 - October 14, 2006)

One of Thirteen children, Jame Wallace, was born in York, Alabama on June 6, 1930 to the union of Lonzo and Mary Wallace (both deceased). In his youth, Jame joined Elizabeth Baptist Church, in Mississippi where e accepted Jesus as his personal savior.  After working for the railroad system in Alabama, Jame moved to Cleveland, Ohio in the 1950s, and started for New York Central Railroad (Conrail) laying railroad ties until his retirement in 1985. Also while living in Cleveland, Jame joined Morning Star Baptist Church. He continued to attending various churches through-out the Great Cleveland area until his health started to fail. It was also in Cleveland, Ohio where Jame met and married Olamae Bonnie (deceased) to which one son was born (deceased), he later had one other son, Kevin.  Jame Wallace, was funny, and kind-hearted in his own way, and he loved his family...He loved his sisters cooking, and if they cooked you would find him seated at their table enjoying some greens, cornbread, chicken, and whatever else they had cooked. Jame would help any family member in need. He helped many of us. All anyone had to do was ask "Uncle Jame"; he never said no...you could always turn to him if you needed help. He many have fussed, but he would always help you. "I can still see him smiling as he walking in the house hands in his pockets jingling his keys and his coins, saying 'Hey Gal'" (We thought at that time he had a whole lot of money in them pockets).  Jame Wallace depared life, as we know if on Saturday, October 14, 2006. He leaves to mourn, his passing, his son, Kevin/ Cleveland, his sisters Loubertha Marbury/ Cleveland, Ora D. Lake (Arthur)/ Cleveland, Elver Hare (Henry)/ Alabama, Adell Carlisle/ Alabama Mary Lake/ Florida, his brothers Lonzo Wallace/ Cleveland, JP Wallace (Bobbie)/ Alabama, OC Wallace (Tina)/ Alabama. Also, left to mourn his memory are a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. He will be missed, but never forgotten by those that knew and loved him.

Thelma Ward (November 19, 1927 - February 9, 2005)

Thelma Ward was born in Columbus, Georgia on November 19, 1927 to the late John and Willie Whitaker.  Thelma retired in 1991 from the Beachwood Board of Education were she was a dedicated worker.  Thelma married her childhood sweetheart Julius Ward, Sr. who precedes her in death. Thelma and Julius joined in Holy Matrimony June 27, 1945.  To this union were born three children, Velma Harper, Allen Ward who precedes her in death, and Julius Ward, Sr.  She made her transition from this life on February 9, 2005 in her home after a long battle with Cancer.  She leaves to cherish her loving memory her two children, Velma Harper and Julius (Laurie) Ward, Sr.; six grandchildren: a very special granddaughter Shirley Ward (Michael) Beasley, Allen Ward, Jr.,  Rochelle (Tony) Ward, Jenise (Derrick) Kelson of Duluth, Georgia, Donnell (Tomeko) Harper, Julius Ward, Jr., Michelle (Xavier Sr.) Lynch;  great-grandchildren: Rodrick, Redrick, Shaleah, Me'Kel, Xavier Jr., Katie, Leon, Craig, Shaphia, Tavin, Dyshawn, Cori, Caleb; great-great- grandchildren: Alyssa and Cory;  a sister, Zella Mae Tiller from Detroit, Michigan; a brother, Clemon Whitaker of Chicago, Illinois;  three sisters-in- law:  Rose and Ruth Ward of Cleveland Ohio, Martha Ward of Columbus, Georgia;  two brothers-in-law:  David Hall of Cleveland Ohio and Charles Ward of Columbus, Georgia;  and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, relatives and friends as well as a dear family friend Gloria Hunter-Rodgers, her best friend Ola.

Franklin D. Washington (July 17, 1940 - April 25, 2006)

Deacon Franklin Washington “Bo Diddley” was born in Sumter County, Alabama to the late Sylvester Washington and Annie Belle Lard.  He answered the master’s call on Tuesday, April 25, 2006.  Just as he had lived the past sixty-five years, his departure was quite and peaceful.  He was a noble Christian, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Brother, and Uncle, and loved by all who knew him, everyone he tried to help, and smiled the whole day through.  He loved and served his Master, and tried His will to do; was always helping others, a life so noble, kind, and true.  He will be missed!   Franklin accepted Christ at an early age, was baptized, and joined Shady Grove Baptist Church.  He later joined the Greater New Calvary Baptist Church where he served faithfully until his death.   He owned and operated the “Famous Coney Island Restaurant on 79th and Superior for several years and later ventured into the Washington’s Towing service.  A master of many things. Willie Washington (February 28, 1924 - April 22, 2007)

Willie Washington “Wash” was born on February 28, 1924 in Natchez, Mississippi to the union of George and Elizabeth (nee Thirdgill) Washington.  Wash, who had a genuine love of animals and treated his dogs and cats like babies, was a quiet man who had many acquaintances.  By choice, however, he acquired very few true friends.  Those who were his friends became lifelong friends and included Jessie Conley, Juanita Bonner and Dorothy Bland.  Wash was a devoted employee of the Ohio Department of Liquor Control from which he retired.  It was there that he met Willie J. Bobo “Bobo” and formed a lasting companionship.  Wash adopted Bobo’s children as his own and they called him “Pops”.  He and Bobo often traveled together and they, along with Dorothy, Jessie and Juanita, often went to church, dinner and other social events together.  This group often times seemed inseparable.  Wash joined Morning Star Baptist Church along with his friends Bobo, Jessie and Juanita.  He made this his church home and served as a member of the Trustee Board and Usher Board.  He attended services faithfully until his health prevented him from doing so.  Wash was a smart man who didn't believe in wasting anything.  He was honest and straightforward and his heart belonged to God, his family, close friends and the church.  On Sunday April 22, 2007 Wash departed this life and is preceded in death by his parents as well as by his wife Jeanette Jonas Washington who passed away on June 16, 1976.  Those left to mourn and to cherish his memories include Willie J. Bobo;  daughters, Fern Norton and Gail Cammon;  son, Gary Bobo;  friends, Dorothy, Jessie, and Juanita;  seven grandchildren, Isaac, Erica, David, Amber, Aaron, Adrian and Devin;  numerous associates and acquaintances.

 

James Watford (April 5, 1934 - July 19, 2004)

James Watford, one of fifteen children born to Frank and Sinnie Watford on April 5, 1934 in Greensboro, Alabama, passed on Monday July 19, 2004.  He attended Steven Morris elementary school and then worked at Holtz, Alabama for a short time, before moving to Cleveland, Ohio in 1955.  He worked at Ungar's Bakery about 10 years.  During this time, he met and married Madie.  They were married by the late Reverend Eugene Ward Sr. on October 3, 1959.  He then moved on to be employed by Chemtron/McGearn-Rohco for 33 years where he retired in 1999.  He received many awards for his years of service to McGean-Rohco.  He also received a service award from East Clark Elementary school and the City of Cleveland.  After retirement, he was employed as a School Crossing Guard at East 146th and St. Clair and East 147th and Aspinwall until his knee surgery in January of this year.  In March of this year, he professed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, joined East Mount Zion Church and was Baptized on March 28, 2004.  He leaves behind a devoted and loving wife, Madie, a daughter, Cynthia Glenn, and grandson, James Tim Glenn Jr. of Rockmart, Georgia, a son, Kevin Jamele Watford, daughter-in-law Florence and male child to be of Euclid, Ohio, a sister Wincer Drew and husband David, of Detroit, Michigan, brothers Louis Watford Sr. and wife Elizabeth of Garfield Heights and Rosevelt Watford Sr. and wife Sandra of Cleveland, Ohio.  He also leaves cousins Jessee Watford and wife Jennene and John Watford of Cleveland, Paul Watford of Springfield, Ohio, sisters-in-law Ann Watford, Gloria Watford and Edythe Watford of Cleveland, Ohio, Georgia Payne, Juanita Perry, Deloris Boykin and husband Henry, of Birmingham, Alabama, Sharron Mitchell, of Jackson, Mississippi, Shirley Faye Dent of Toledo, Ohio, and Bernice Groce Isbell of Columbus, Ohio.  In addition he leaves brothers-in-law Samuel Mitchell of Jackson, Mississippi, James W. Groce and wife Joyce of Key West, Florida, Walter William Mitchell of Birmingham, Alabama, uncle Mallory Lawler and wife Willa Dean of Cleveland, Ohio and aunt W. Ruth Ficklin of Los Angeles, California.  James is also survived by a host of other cousins, nieces and nephews in Ashtabula, Ohio, the states of Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, Alabama, Michigan, Georgia, New York, Florida, Texas, Massachusetts and our Gruss Avenue Street Club family.

 

George Wathen (February 22, 1929 - June 14, 2007)

George Wathen attended the Cleveland Public School System and later served in the United States Army during WWII and received an honorable discharge.  Over the years, George worked multiple jobs and ultimately retired from the City of Cleveland after thirty years of service.  George is preceded in death by his father, Virgil Wathen;  mother, Arvelean Holt Fletcher;  stepfather, Charlie Fletcher;  and his three brothers, James Wathen, Robert Wathen and Milton Wathen.  He leaves to cherish his loving memories his devoted wife Yohlanda; three children, Russell, James and Valerie; and five stepchildren - Michael Fletcher, Cassandra Haywood, Robert Haywood, Kennard Boyd and Abram Boyd; a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren;  three sisters-in-law, Edith Wathen, Andrea Switzer, and Daphne Foley;  three brothers-in-law,  Michael Foley, Vincent Foley and Carnelle Switzer; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

 

Linda Jean Watkins (May 14, 1954 - June 26, 2004)

Linda Jean Watkins was born on May 14, 1954 in a small town in Mississippi to Bonnie L. Montgomery and Jack Junior Montgomery, both having preceded her in death.  She was the third oldest of nine brothers and sisters.  After becoming a young woman, she married Walter Junior Watkins and they had two daughters, Brenda Jean Watkins and Penelope Quanchell Watkins.  Linda graduated from Calhoun High School and became a factory worker and a nurse.  Thereafter, she got a divorce and moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1975.  Here, she married twice - to Marvin Moore and then to Earnest Thompson who preceded here in death.  She was a very loving and caring person.  She loved to socialize; she was easy to get along with; every person she met she had a good impact on.  She enjoyed talking on the phone and if you needed any advice, she had it.  She was just one of the sweetest people you ever met.  In fact, she was so sweet her nickname was "Candy".  Later on in her lifetime, Linda became very sick with diabetes, heart trouble, asthma, and arthritis.  On Saturday, June 26 2004, she suffered from organ failure and died at University Hospital.  Linda leaves to mourn two daughters, Brenda Jean Watkins and Penelope Quanchell Watkins; three sisters, Bonnie Fay Anderson, Mary Ann Richardson and Bridgette Kaye Montgomery; five brothers Thomas Montgomery, Dewayne Montgomery, Sammie T. Montgomery, Kenny Montgomery and James Henry Montgomery who preceded her in death; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and other loving family members and friends.

 

Mary Lee Watson (January 24, 1949 - October 12, 2005)

Mary Lee Watson was born on January 24, 1949 in Tunica, Mississippi to the union of William Watson and Estella Christian.  While in Mississippi, and, at an early age, Mary accepted Christ into her life.  She had also been a student at Nugent Center High School in Bernard, Mississippi.  In the 1960's, the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio where Mary attended Glenville High School.  Mary was a happy woman who loved life and her family.  Her home was the center of many family gatherings and she loved to cook - with potato salad and cornbread being her specialties!  On October 12, 2005, Mary departed this life.  She is preceded in death by her parents and by one brother, John Kinsey.  She leaves to cherish her memory, five children:  Richard Watson of Cleveland, OH, Glenn (Carolyn Williams) Watson of Landover, MD, LaTonya Watson of Cleveland, OH, Rayshawn Watson of Cleveland, OH and LaKeesha Watson of Cleveland, OH;  two sisters, Gloria (William) Lambert and Gladys Blakely, both of Cleveland, OH;  one brother, Johnnie Harris of Cleveland, OH;  four grandchildren;  and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

 

Milton Thomas Weaver (September 15, 1921 - October 27, 2006)

Milton Thomas Weaver “MT” was born on September 15, 1921 to the late John Curtis and Mattie Lou (Dickerson) Weaver in Lineville, Alabama.  This loving family was favored with twelve children -six boys and six girls.  On Friday, October 27, 2006, Milton made his transition from this life to join nine of his siblings in eternal sleep:  LB, William, Curtis, Harold, Melba, Hattie Sue, Mattie Lou, Rose, and Mae Rosie.  Growing up in Lineville, MT attended Clay County School.  He was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church and at the age of twelve he was baptized by Rev. Andrew Green.  In 1942, Milton joined the Army and served in World War II.  While in the Army, he attended Grad Cooks and Bakers School and was employed as a cook.  In 1946, upon being honorably discharged, Milton received the ATO, APTO, and World War II Victory Medals.  In 1947, he married Bovene and in 1950, they moved to Cleveland, Ohio.  Milton was a jack of all trades.  Some of the jobs that he held included being a delivery man, and a property manager.  He was also a postal worker for thirty-three years before retiring.  His hobbies included philosophy, carpentry, baking, baseball, boxing, bowling, and football.  However, one his strongest passions, that he shared with his wife, whom he affectionately called “Bean”, was the love of people, especially children.  Together, their hearts reached out and raised family and over sixty foster children.  He leaves to cherish many fond memories his loving and devoted wife, Mrs. Bovene Weaver;  two devoted granddaughters, whom he raised as his own - Kimicko and Akiah Allen; a loving great granddaughter, Monolitta Carrington;  McKale (deceased) and Davelle (Kadisha) Hill whom he raised as sons;  Beverly Moore whom he raised as a daughter;  sister, Geneva Johnson; brother, Vernon C. (Hazel) Weaver;  special niece and nephews:  China Weaver-Brown, Andrew Johnson, and-James (Linda) Houston; all of Cleveland, Ohio;  sisters-in-law, Alma Marbury of Alexander City, Alabama and Freddie Weaver of Wedowee, Alabama;  Godsons, William, Walter (deceased), Wayne and Keith Wheeler of Detroit, Michigan;  and many, many loving family and friends.

 

Lula B. Webb (June 23, 1916 - March 20, 2004)

Lady Lula Webb was born June 23, 1916 in Pike County, Alabama to Mr. and Mrs. Silas Wingard.  As a child Lula attended school at the Old Mt. Zion Baptist Church.  She also attended church at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.  There she accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior.  During the year of 1938, she was united in holy matrimony to Uther Hooks, who preceded her in death.  To this blessed union, seven (7) children were born.  Yearning to relocate, in 1968, she moved to Cleveland, Ohio.  While there she attended the Hebrew Pentecostal Holiness Church.  It was there she received the Holy Ghost.  Later, she was united in holy matrimony to Reverand John Webb, who preceded her in death.  After his death, she moved her membership to the New Mt. Zion Baptist Church.  With the leading of the Lord, Mother Webb moved her membership to the House of God (Shiloh Temple) located at 1194 E. 79th Street.  She was known by many names, Lady Webb, MomB, Mother Webb and Momma.  Mother Webb was a faithful member of Shiloh Temple where she served as an Elect Lady, President of the Mother's Board, the 1st President of the Pastor's Aide Committee and a fervent Prayer Warrior.  Lady Webb devoted her life to God, her family and the church.  Early March 20, 2004, Elect Lady Lula B. Webb was called home to be with the Lord.  Born to her parents also were two (2) brothers and four (4) sisters.  Five (5) of them, Grady, Mattie Vera, Clara, Ida Mae and Paul all preceded her in death.  Also, three (3) of her children, Thomas Lee Folmar, Annie Mae Bogan and Dorothene Hooks, preceded her in death.  Behind she leaves to cherish her memory her sister Grace Wingard (Selma, AL);  her children, Annie Richards and Lorene Fuller (Troy, AL), Corene Lemmons (Akron, OH), Betty Taylor (Cleveland, OH) and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and church family.  "MomB" you will truly be missed.

 

William Curtis Weems, Jr. (July 22, 1938 - August 27, 2005)

William Curtis Weems was born July 22, 1938 to William Henry and Cornelia Mary Weems.  William was born at University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio.  Bill attended Cleveland Public Schools - Wooldridge Elementary, Kennard Jr. High School and East Technical High School.  After graduating from East Technical, Bill went to Kent State University extension program for two years.  During Bill's school years, he was active in a number of organizations.  He sang in the East Tech A Capella Choir.  He sang with the All City Choir (a choir of selected voices from high schools around Cleveland, Ohio) and  Bill sang bass.  Bill confessed Christ at seven years of age.  He was baptized in 1945 at Zion Hill Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. A. William Johnson.  Bill served on the Red Circle usher board and also the Junior Usher Board for a number of years.  Bill sang with a gospel group, The Rose of Sharon Jrs., for a number of years.  In this group he held the position of both President and Secretary for a number of years.  Bill joined the Cleveland Chapter of Indoor Gardening Society of America, Inc. in 1978 and in this organization he held the position of both corresponding secretary and recording secretary for a number of years.  Also, President of Chapter 2003.  Bill leaves to mourn and to cherish his memories, a sister, Delores Robinson;  brother, Lawrence Paul Weems;  nieces and nephews, John (Rose) Robinson, Lawrence Robinson, Karen (Tim Perry) Pickard, and Christina (Jeff) Brown;  four great nephews and seven great nieces;  his aunt, Corrine Burgess;  cousins, Vivian Nickens and Tina (Lou) Graham;  and his very dear friend Robert Farriss.  He also leaves to mourn a host of other family and friends.

Carl White (September 10, 1946 - July 7, 2007)

Carl White was born on September 10, 1946 in Monroe, Louisiana to Carrie White and Gilmore Ellis.  Carl confessed Christ at an early age and was baptized in his hometown.  He attended Monroe Public Schools and later met Sadie and to their loving union had two children:  Cherilyene and James, both of Monroe, Louisiana. Carl later moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he met Rose.  To their union three beautiful daughters were born:  LaTonya of Dallas, Texas, Tameka of Atlanta, Georgia and Nakia of Cleveland, Ohio.  Carl gained employment with Executive Caterers here in Cleveland as a chef.  He loved to cook and “could make a hotdog taste like steak!”  His chicken dishes and greens will surely be missed!  In addition to cooking, Carl loved to iron clothes and was considered “better than the drycleaners!”  He loved all types of sports and was known for his fun loving ways.  After a long illness, Carl was called home on July 7, 2007 and is preceded in death by his parents;  his brother Gilmore “June” Ellis;  sisters Helena (Jesse) Broadnax, Dorothy Lewis, and Betty Vills.  His memories will live on through his four daughters and son;  his three devoted sisters - Lucille Williams, Mattie Turner and Carrie McFee and one caring brother J.C. Gardner of Monroe, Louisiana;  and eleven wonderful grandchildren.  Carl also leaves behind a long life companion of 22 years, Mary Lee Gordon and her children – Robert, Francine, Lawrence, and Erica as well as thirteen grandchildren of Cleveland, Ohio.  A host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, whom he all loved dearly, will also miss his presence.

 

Mary Belle White (March 12, 1925 - September 26, 2006)

Mrs. Mary Belle White was born March 12, 1925  to the late Albert & Cora Ward in Fairfield Alabama.  She was called to her everlasting home September 26, 2006.  Mary accepted Christ at an early age.  She enjoyed in Holy Matrimony to Dennis White.  And in that union four children were born.  She enjoyed cooking and listening to variety of music and having family around her.  She was loving and giving.  She leaves to cherish her memory Three Daughters, Willa Mae Holman (Richard) Detroit, Mich., Mary Black (Author) and Cora Owens (James), one son Dennis White all of Cleveland, Ohio, sisters and brothers, Mattie Ward – Hillary of Boston, Mass., Shirley Ward, Albert Lewis Ward (deceased), Bernice Ward, Dorothy Mitchell, Carlene Ward (deceased), Althea Ward, Herman Ward (deceased), Ruth Monett (deceased) Sue Emma McClendon all of Birmingham Ala., grandchildren Theresa, Troy, Marcus, Richard Jr. Holman, Ronald and Namon Harris, Michelle and Luke Barnett, Garran Scott and Kia James Owens Jr.  Denisha White (deceased), Tanay Young, Kylar White and host of loving great-great grand children, nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, family and friends.   And two special friends, Mrs. A. Simpson and Essie B. Poole.

 

Saul M. White (March 25, 1932 - July 9, 2007)

Saul M. White was born on March 25, 1932 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the loving union of Arthur and Leana White. Saul graduated from high school at the age of 16 and it is reported that he earned a Purple Heart and was one of the most decorated soldiers of the Korean War.  Saul was a machine operator at Chrysler Stamping Plant and a welder at Parlwood Iron and Metal on 55th Street.  He was also a gifted artist, mechanic, and carpenter and was considered a jack of all trades.  On Monday July 9, 2007, Saul departed this life.  He is preceded in death by his parents;  by five brothers - William, Mano, Clarence, Henry, and Joseph; and by one sister, Sarah.  Those who are left to mourn his memory include his loving wife of forty-one years - Janice;  their children Saul Mario (Erica) White of Cleveland, Ohio and Dionne Annette (Ray)Allen of Garfield Heights, Ohio and Saul’s son from a previous marriage - James (Gerldine) Comer;  one brother, Wilbert White;  four grandchildren, Mario Jamal Jones, Camalle RaeNiece Jones, Eric Huston Jones, and Marie Annette White;  step-grandchildren, April Morgan, Jamie Comer, and Christie Comer;  two great-grandchildren, Diamond and Diora Morgan;  and one unborn great-granddaughter Sprinkles;  three close friends, Bernard and Patrice Lavender and Josephine Johnson all of Cleveland, Ohio.   Saul always said, “I was born ahead of my time – I walk slow because there’s no hurry - your destination will be there.  See where I’ve been and track where I go next.”

 

Barbara C. Whitfield (April 20, 1926 - September 1, 2006)

Barbara Corinne Whitfield was born on April 20, 1926 in Wellington, Ohio.  She was the fifth of six children born to the union of Carl and Julia Wynn.  Barbara was educated in the Wellington, Ohio School District where she graduated from Wellington High School.  In the early 1950's, she moved to Cleveland, Ohio.  In 1954, she married Walter Whitfield who she met while attending St. Andrew Episcopal Church.  The couple was blessed with one child, Deborah.  While Barbara had worked as a nurse's aide, her primary occupation and the activities of her life centered around her family. Barbara departed this life on September 1, 2006.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Walter; as well as by all of her siblings, Carl Wynn, Jr., Madeline Byrd, Julia Miller, Eleanor Morgan, and Richard Wynn.  She leaves to cherish her memories her daughter, Deborah (Bervin) Collins; three grandchildren, Melissa (Antonio) Brown, Jennifer (Jonathan) Minor, and Camille Robinson; three great-grandchildren, Alanna Brown, Miles Brown, and Jacqueline Minor; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

 

Vera Whitsett (February 26, 1935 – November 8, 2003)

Vera Whitsett was born February 26, 1935.  Vera was called home on Saturday, November 8, 2003.  Vera attended Cleveland Public Schools and graduated from John Hay High School.  Vera worked as a Senior Clerk in the Medical Unit of the Justice Center for 32 years.  After retiring in 1999, Vera began tutoring at Marion Sterling School where she obtained great satisfaction in helping children.  Vera attended Holy Trinity Baptist Church where she was a dedicated and faithful member.  Vera was very active in church serving on several church auxiliaries such as Missions and Nursing Home Visitation.  She was also a member of the City Mission, Murtis Taylor and Zelma George Senior Activity Center.  Vera leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Jack C. (Robin) Whitsett and Dale A. Whitsett;  six grandchildren, Robert C. Whitsett, Jack H. Whitsett, Joshua J. Whitsett, Taria L. Whitsett, Niyia L. Whitsett, and Darryl Keith;  one aunt, Bernice Buford;  three best friends, Lorraine Moore, Elaine Bryant, and Barbara Haggart;  two very special friends, Shirley O'Neal and Carlena Covington; and a host of cousins and friends.

 

Dorrough Whittaker (November 5, 1952 - November 15, 2007)

Beloved son to Thomas and Lina Whittaker, father to Dorrough Lane, brother to JoLynn Hall, Debra Robinson(Gregory), Brandon Whittaker, Mark Whittaker, and step brother to Denisha Whittaker, uncle to Dionne Huffman (Troy), Wendy Simmons, Marie Whittaker, Brandon Clarke, Mya Robinson, Gregory Robinson Jr. , Kyla Whittaker. Also a relative and friend to many.  We love you and we will miss you dearly!

 

Edward Wilcox, Sr. (February 7, 1931 - September 29, 2004)

Edward Wilcox, Sr. was born February 7, 1931 in Cleveland, Ohio and died on September 29, 2004 at his home.  He was the son of the late Lucinda and Raspberry Wilcox, Sr.  Edward was a husband, father and the seventh of nine brothers and sisters.  Edward received his educational training through the Cleveland Public School System, which granted him a job at United Screw and Bolt for 45 years and a part time job with Data Com for 30 years. In his spare time, Edward enjoyed activities such as spending time at Woodland Recreation Center where he spent his time boxing, riding his bike, collecting cans and weekend refreshments.  He also appreciated different types of music such as Blues, Jazz and good conversations with his neighbors and friends.  Edward had such a way with words and making people enjoy his company that his kind, smooth, and pleasant conversations assisted him with the love of his life, Ms. Betty Andrews.  On September 25, 1955, Edward and Betty were married, and they remained a united couple for 49 years.  Their time spent together was shared spending time, dancing and special dates every Saturday evening.  These intimate times together created four children named Carol, Edward Jr., Barbara and Lamont.  Edward and Betty spent the remainder of their lives caring, loving and providing for their children, who were their pride and joy.  Edward's love for his family led several members to refer to him as “PA-PA”.  Edward spent the past few years living with his wife Betty, enjoying his retirement and spending time with family and friends.  Despite his illness, Edward always kept a good sense of humor and persevered to regain his strength, state of mind and life.  Edward leaves behind his wife Betty;  four children, Carol Wilcox, Edward Wilcox, Jr. (Crystal), Barbara Edmonds (Steve), and Lamont Wilcox;  five grandchildren, Jessica, Jennifer, Cristian, Edward III, and Cache’;  two great-grandchildren, Keiona and Donta’;  eight brothers and sisters, Wilma Mae Blackshire, Katherine Calhoun, Lillian Wembly, Raspberry Wilcox, Jr. (Ada), and the late Florida, Elisabeth, Leroy, and Cicero Wilcox;  two sisters–in-law, Renee’ Prince (Rodney) and Beverley Montgomery;  and one brother-in-law, George Andrews.  As a surrogate father, Edward also leaves behind Tyrone, Johnny, Warren, Donald, Elnoria and, as a surrogate grandfather, leaves Antonio, Dominic and Donna.  He also leaves a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, family and friends. 

 

Raseberry Wilcox, Jr. (December 4, 1934 - March 22, 2006)

Raseberry "Rase" Wilcox, Jr. was born on December 4, 1934 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Raseberry Sr. and Lucinda Wilcox.  He was the youngest of eight children.  June Bug, as he was lovingly called by his family, attended parochial and Cleveland Public Schools.  He graduated from Benedictine High School.   He attended Williams Temple Church of God.  He later became a member of Parkwood C.M.E. Church.  He worked 18 years for Midwest Material Company and retired in 1996.  He met his lovely wife Ada Pearl Brooks in 1977 and they were united in marriage on March 3, 1980.  One of his greatest joys was fishing.  He enjoyed taking family and friends out on his boat.  He had a mechanical mind and liked to tinker with cars, houses and appliances.  He was a very humble and gentle person whom everyone loved.  Sunset for Raseberry was March 22, 2006 at 6:00 a.m. at the age of seventy-one.  Five siblings preceded Raseberry in death - Florita, Elizabeth, Leroy, Cicero and Edward.  He leaves to mourn his devoted wife, Ada; a son, Donay (Charita); stepchildren, Stanley and Joan; three sisters, Willie Mae Blackshear, Katherine Calhoun, and Lillian Wimbley; six grandchildren, Keeara, Chanay, Beth, Phillip, Valencia, Joniece;  and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

 

Alfred Payton Williams

Alfred Payton Williams was born in Cleveland, Ohio to the wonderful parents of Payton and Luleen Williams on April 10, 1950.  Alfred grew up in Orwell, Ohio he attended school at Windsor Elementary, Grand Valley High and graduated from Job Corps in Cleveland, Ohio. He accepted Christ at an early age and always loved to sing in the church choir. He loved writing poems and teaching Kung Fu. He taught Kung Fu Do to several students in the Cleveland area, where a great number of then received medals of Honor and/or black belts.  Alfred wrote several poems and short stories that were published in the Plain Dealer and the Cleveland Press Newspapers. He recited several of his poems for Cleveland, Ohio radio stations. His poems and inspirations aided his family in times of need.  He would gladly come to the aid of his family and friends and even strangers that crossed his path. He always treated everyone with respect, and even risked his life to rescue a drowning child in the raging waters of Lake Erie.  Many of his friends knew him lovingly as “CHOP” in which he received his nickname from his black belt status in Kung Fu. He loved to skate, sing, play pool and watch sports including the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Cleveland Browns, but especially the Ohio State Buckeye games.  He went to Vietnam at the tender age of 18 to fight for his country in which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Purple Heart, Medal of Bravery and the Bronze Star Medal of Valor.  He was wounded in Vietnam by manning the machine gun to keep the Vietcong from taking the platoon, where he was shot and stabbed several times saving his platoon which constitutes him as a war hero.  Alfred Payton was the 5th child of Luleen and Payton Williams Sr. who preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Patricia;  9 children: Tiesha, Tyla (Ron), Rasheda, Alfred, Alkeisa, Al Maurice, Antonio, Dea and Shania; 4 brothers:  Payton Jr., Donald Lee, Willie Steve and John Joseph;  3 sisters:  Ann, Bonnie Ann and Debra Paulette;  2 siblings preceded him in death:  Robert Earl and Susie Mae.  One Uncle (John) and 2 aunts: (Annie and Clodine);  15 Grandchildren and 1 Great-grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. 

 

Annie Pearl Williams (February 3, 1944 - July 15, 2006)

Annie Pearl Williams was born February 3, 1944 to the blessed union of the late Henry Henderson and Susie Mae White.  Annie graduated from Tipton High School in 1962.  Annie moved to Cleveland, Ohio.  She worked for St. Luke’s for thirteen years and from there, she was a nurse assistant throughout the remainder of her life  Annie, better know as “Pat”, accepted Christ at an early age.  Annie had a certain charisma that was hard to come by and a beautiful smile that was only one in a million.  Annie loved caring for and helping others.  Annie was an avid reader and an open minded conversationalist.  The peace that she would leave you with put ease to anyone’s life.  Annie departed this earthly home on July 15, 2006 at her Cleveland home.  Those that have preceded her include her parents, one brother - Benny Smith;  two sisters – Mary White and Ethel Lucas.   She leaves to cherish her precious memories, two children: Christopher A. Williams and Rashad K. I. Asaad;  one sister, Rosa L. Portis;  one brother, Johnny White;  three grandchildren, Teaunna Walker, Christopher Williams Jr., and Cierra Sims;  and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends of Rashad.   She will be greatly missed.

 

Bailey Williams Jr. (January 15, 1916 - February 2, 2007)

Bailey Williams Jr. was born January 15, 1916 in Pittsburgh, PA.  He was the 2nd of six children born to Bailey Williams Sr. and Laura Carter Williams of Pittsburgh, PA.  He completed his secondary education before enlisting into the US Army.  He served honorably from 1942 until 1945 in the South Pacific;  he later received an honorable discharge.  Shortly thereafter, he returned to his hometown of Pittsburgh to be with family and to begin a new chapter in his life.  He later moved to Cleveland and landed his first job as a meat processor for Ray's Sausage Co.  As the 50's ended, Bailey worked with a number of companies, American Courier, Mayfield Heights Board for Education and South Euclid Garden Supply.  In 1965, Bailey was employed with the US Postal Service for over 25 years and would retire from this career in 1989.  It was the workforce that led him to the love of his life, Ruth.  Bailey pursued then married Ruth.  They married in 1960.  Bailey and Ruth have two daughters Toni and Michelle.  Some hobbies he enjoyed early in life were bowling, traveling and he like to watch professional football.  He loved the Cleveland Browns when Jim Brown played but he was always a true Pittsburgh Steelers fan.  On February 2, 2007, Bailey Williams departed this life.  Other family members who preceded him in death included father and mother Bailey and Laura Williams;  brothers George, Harry and Thomas Williams, sisters Audrey and Betty Williams;  son Michael Alexander and grandson DaMon Alexander.  Bailey leaves to cherish his memories his beloved wife of 47 years, Ruth;  children Toni, Michelle, Renee and Jimmy;  grandchildren Robert, Jordan, Kiyanna, Ayesha and Jimmie IV;  nephews John and Edward Williams;  sisters in law Laura Brown (Birmingham AL), Bobbie Lewis, Winifred Williams (Columbus OH);  brothers in law Tommie and Isaiah Cargill and wife Annie Ruth;  and a host of other relatives and friends

 

Ester Williams (January 24, 1934 - August 30, 2004)

Esther Williams was born January 24, 1934 in Person City, North Carolina to the late Clara Baskerville.  She was the oldest of eleven children.  She departed this life to be with the Lord on August 30, 2004 at University Hospitals of Cleveland.  Esther accepted Christ at an early age and attended Zion Level Baptist Church in North Carolina.  She attended school in Yanceyville, N.C.   She later moved to Cleveland, Ohio in the late 50’s.  There she met Willie Hector to which 4 children were born out of this relationship.  She joined Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church in 1981 where she sang in the choir for many years.  She later joined the Missionary Ministry where she served faithfully until her health would no longer allow her to participate. She remained an honorary member.  She loved her church and she loved her Pastor.  She leaves to mourn 4 children, Michael (Deirdre) of Lilburn, Georgia, Deborah, Gail, Willie (Damon) Hector of Cleveland, Ohio;  5 sisters, Rosa (Carl) of North Carolina, Doris (Keith), Evonne (Harry), Deloris Ayers, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Nessel Baskerville of Cincinnati, Ohio;  5 brothers, Larry and Johnny of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Edward (Laura), Tariq (Tara) of Dayton, Ohio, Jerry  of  Cincinnati, Ohio;  8 grandchildren, Antwuane, Andrew, Michael, Marcus, Michelle of Georgia, Denita, Jessica and D’Quan of Cleveland; 3 great-grandchildren, Azira, Deneesha and Destiny;  4 uncles;  1 aunt and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended children and a host of other relatives and friends.

 

Laphonso L. Williams, III (February 4, 1986 - September 7, 2006)

Laphonso Lewis Williams, III was born on February 4, 1986 to Ms. Trudy Deanna Jacobs and Mr. Laphonso Lewis Williams, Jr. in Cleveland, Ohio.  Laphonso accepted Christ in his life at an early age at Good Shepherd Baptist Church of Cleveland, Ohio.  In addition, he attended classes in the Cleveland Public Schools, leaving Glenville High School to attend Cleveland Community College to achieve his GED Certificate.  While in school, he worked aside Maurice Peterson, a master Auto Body/Paint Technician.  Laphonso also had a strong passion for water activities and used his strong swimming skills to become a Certified Life Guard for the City of Cleveland’s Department of Parks and Recreation where he instructed individuals from young children to senior citizens how to swim. “Guess that was the Aquarius in our baby”.  Laphonso was a bright and vibrant young man.  He was a lover of life and had a loving and giving spirit.  He was so full of life’s energy that he left everyone with his special words of flavor such as “It gets Greater Later” and “What’s good?”  He was a real live wire with a burst of energy that was truly felt when you were in his presence.  Laphonso had passion for life that was felt by all that knew him.  In addition, he was a strong link in his circle of family and close friends.  He encouraged everyone of his family members to stick together and stay close and to watch each other’s back.  He always let them know that hhe was only a phone call away if needed.  Some of Laphonso’s favorite hobbies and activities were swimming, cars, and listening to music.  He especially liked Chopper and Screw Rap; R & B, etc. and, most of all, just hanging out with his brothers, close friends, and family.

 

Luleen Williams (June 2, 1927 - October 2, 2006)

Luleen Williams was born June 2, 1927 in Greenville, Alabama  the parents of Alma and Joe Crittenden. She accepted Christ at an early age and attended and graduated from Rad Hill High School in Greenville, Alabama.  Luleen met and married Payton Williams, Sr. who preceded her in death and into this union nine children were born. Luleen and Payton moved to Orwell, Ohio and attended "First Baptist Church". They later moved to Cleveland, Ohio where they joined the "Second Nazerene Missionary Baptist Church" under the leadership of Reverend George Wheeler. Luleen worked at Chardon Rubber Company and she also worked in Cleveland Public School District as a lunch aid. She also worked diligently as a Missionary at Second Nazerene. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Luleen resided in the comfort of her home until the Lord called her home on October 2, 2006. She leaves to cherish her loving memories, five sons; Payton Jr., Donald, Alfred, Willie and John Joseph, three daughters; Bonnie Ann, Debra Jones (Annie Dixson). She also leaves two sisters-in-laws; Clarabelle Crittenden and Annie Mae Williams, two brother-in-laws; Patricia Williams (Patty), and Angela Williams. She leaves a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends that will miss her dearly.

 

Pennie Williams (September 30, 1917 - October 21, 2007)

Pennie Williams was born on September 30, 1917 to the union of Samuel and Ollie (nee Drane) Miller in Rome, Mississippi.  Pennie accepted Christ into her life at a young age and at the age of eight, she moved with her family to their new home in East Chicago, Indiana.  Here, she received her education and graduated from Washington High School.  On May 10, 1958, Pennie married Rev. Edward T. Williams Sr.  In 1969, the couple moved to Chicago, Illinois when Rev. Williams was called to preach there.   While in Chicago, Pennie had worked as an electronics technician and, in 1979, due to her mother’s failing health, the couple moved back to East Chicago, Indiana.  After her husband’s passing in 1993, Pennie moved to Cleveland, Ohio.  Pennie was an outgoing and sociable woman who made friends easily.  She loved church, singing, traveling and entertaining her friends.  Pennie also loved to bake and her cakes, breads and rolls will surely be missed!  On Sunday October 21, 2007, Pennie departed this life.  She is preceded in death by her parents;  by her husband, Rev. Edward T. Williams, Sr.; daughter Brenda Young;  as well as by her siblings Cramor, Robert Lee, Ora Mae, Eddie, Mary, Sam, John and Otis.  Those left to mourn and to cherish her memories include her children Bertha Williams of Orlando, Florida, Janet (Arthur) Jones of Jacksonville, Florida, Evangelist Barbara Miller of Syracuse, New York, Edward Williams of Chicago, Illinois;  siblings Martha Fell of Cleveland, Ohio and James (Jean) Miller of East Chicago, Indiana;  sister-in-law Ermaline Miller of East Chicago, Indiana;  thirteen grandchildren which include Gregory Williams and Lafayette Harris who she helped raise;  twenty-nine great-grandchildren;  as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends.

 

Samuel Henry Williams Sr. (November 6, 1947 - February 9, 2007)

Samuel Henry Williams, Sr. was born on November 6, 1947 in Gary, Indiana to the union of Robert and Hester (nee King) Williams.  “Jo Jo”, as he was affectionately called, received Christ into his life at an early age.  He was also educated in Indiana where he graduated from Roosevelt High School.  On June 19, 1967, Samuel entered into the U.S. Army.  During his tour of duty, he earned a National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal with Four Bronze Service Stars, and a Vietnam Campaign Medal.  On June 18, 1970, Samuel received an Honorable Discharge from active military service and over the next seventeen years re-enlisted for Reserve Duty.  For a number of years after returning home, Samuel worked as a machinist and welder for the Gary Works Steel Mill in Gary, Indiana.  In the early 1980’s he later moved on to Cleveland, Ohio.  While in Cleveland, Samuel held various jobs which included being a truck driver, a factory laborer and, most recently, a machinist for Neway Stamping in Wickliffe, Ohio.  Samuel was an outgoing and fun loving person who enjoyed poker, bowling, and baseball.  He also loved the Cubs and the Indianapolis Colts.  His fondness for “interrogating” his family and friends in an effort to gain a reaction will surely be missed!  On Friday February 9, 2007, following a period of illness, Samuel departed this life.  He is preceded in death by his parents and by siblings Mary Lee Avant, Joshua McKinney, Robert Williams, Jr. and Eugene Williams.  Those left to mourn and to cherish his memory include his wife Gail who he met in 1989 and married in 1998;  two children, Samuel Williams, Jr. and Yolanda Williams;  two stepsons, Brian Owens and Jovan (Leshawnia) Owens, Sr.;  three sisters, Rose Holley of Chicago, Illinois, Carol (William) Moon of Cleveland, Ohio, Ora Lee (Carrie) Murray of Mississippi;  one brother, Paul (Sharon) Williams of Indiana;  mother-in-law, Hazel Owens;  grandchildren, Taneisha, Briana, Kenshay and Jovan Jr.;  and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

 

Willie Clyde Williams (March 13, 1936 - March 13, 2005)

Willie Clyde Williams was born on March 13, 1936 in Mapleville, Alabama to the late Clemon Williams and Carrie Lee Davis Williams.  At an early age, Willie joined the New Convert Baptist Church.  He was educated in the Mapleville School System and in 1957, Willie relocated to Cleveland, Ohio.  He worked in railroad construction for over thirty years and is warmly remembered for breaking hammers while nailing in spikes.  Willie never missed one day of work from any job and during times of derailment, could be depended upon to show up for work, no matter how early in the morning.  In 1995, Willie retired from the Standard Construction Company here in Cleveland.  Willie was united in holy matrimony to Barbara Nell Hannah in 1960.  To this union three children were born - Walter Earl, Delores and Randy.  Willie was a quiet-spirited man who loved his family and cared for others in need.  He was full of knowledge and often shared what was on his mind.  One piece of wisdom that he passed on was to "let your job be your alarm clock..."  Willie loved spontaneous travel - especially going down South.  He was also a fan of football and baseball.  He especially loved outdoor grilling and was known to have perfected a special secret recipe barbeque sauce!  On March 13, 2005, Willie departed this life.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by all four of his brothers - Raymond, Earl, Franklin and Nelson.  He is also preceded in death by stepson Robert Charles King.  Willie leaves to cherish his loving memories:  wife, Barbara Williams;  daughter, Delores Williams of Cleveland, Ohio;  three sons, Randy Williams, Walter Williams and Henry King, all of Cleveland, Ohio;  two grandsons, DeShun Isaiah Williams and Josue Concepcion Williams;  three sisters, Mary Gray of Bessemer, Alabama, Climmie (Earl) Nix and Sadie Daniels, both of Mapleville, Alabama;  three aunts;  three sisters-in-law, Janie Miller, Dorothy (Ernest) Hollis and Savannah Harmon, all of Cleveland, Ohio;  one brother-in-law, Leevester (Vera) Hannah of New Orleans, Louisiana;  and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

 

John L. Willispoon (September 23, 1931 - January 6, 2005)

John Willispoon, the second of five children, was born on September 23, 1931 to the union of Fred and Ella Mae Willispoon in Brent, Alabama.  In 1948, the family left Alabama and moved to St. Louis, Missouri.  While in St. Louis, John confessed his belief in Christ and was baptized at The Prince of Peace Baptist Church.  "Jumpa", as he was affectionately known, moved to Cleveland in 1950 at the age of 18.  He later formed a 7 piece band with two dancers and was known around town as "Mr. Fabulous".  On August 22, 1970, John was united in Holy Matrimony to Opal Elbert.  He is preceded in death by his parents;  siblings, Melinda, Velma, Amanda and Pearl;  as well as sons Terron and Derrick.  Those left to cherish his memories include wife, Opal;  children, Kenneth, David, Renee and Yvonne; as well as sister-in-law, Allean Heggie.  He was also the grandfather to so many that they all can't be listed.  John also leaves a host of other family and friends that loved him dearly.  The family also wishes to mention two people who have and continue to claim "Jumpa" as their second dad - Edward and Yulonda Freeman.

 

Charlie Wilson (September 7, 1923 - November 11, 2006)

Mr. Charlie Wilson, known to many as “Chuck” or “Mista Chuck” was the 3rd of 6 children born of the union of the late Maggie (nee President) and Charlie Wilson on September 7, 1923, in Vicksburg, Mississippi.  He accepted Christ at and early age and was baptized by Reverend Richardson at St. Mark Freewill Baptist Church in Vicksburg, Mississippi.  He spent a short time in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and then decided to move to Cleveland, Ohio, where he settled his life.  Charlie met the love of his life Iris and together they shared their love and raised 5 children.  He joined Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in 1960 and served as a dedicated usher.  He worked for the Harshaw Chemical Company for 33 years and retired in 1986 to guide the lives of his grandchildren.  He and his loving wife have been residents of East Cleveland since 1972.  His love for the community was demonstrated by his effortless attempt to keep the immediate neighborhood clean by going out daily, removing debris from the streets and sidewalks.  The neighborhood children new him as the “Candy Man” because he was such a giving and caring man, as was so often shown.  He was loved by many and will certainly be missed by the community.  He leaves to mourn his loving wife Iris, 2 sisters: Bertha Brown, St. Louis, MO, and Rosie Crump, Los Angeles, CA; 5 children: Greg (Helena) Charles (Tammi), Terry (Theresa) Nashville, TN, Shelia (Sam), Yvonka (Spencer), 16 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

 

Clyde Wilson (August 1, 1942 - November 21, 2007)

Mr. Clyde Wilson was born on August 1, 1942 in Leland, Mississippi to the union of Lewis and Irene (nee Bush) Wilson.  Clyde loved to fish and his family was his life.  He worked at Foseco Metallurgical Inc. as a machinist for twenty-nine years.  It was no secret that Clyde was looking forward to retirement, for he would proudly state, “When I retire, I’m going fishing!”  He also had a love for music - especially blues and jazz.  Clyde was loved by everyone and his smile will never be forgotten.  Clyde was preceded in death by his wife Devon E. Wilson; his parents;  three brothers - Sylvester, James and Robert;  and a special friend, Lorraine Black.  Clyde leaves to cherish his memory and mourn his passing three daughters, Orelia (Douglas) Jones of Cleveland, Ohio, Jonette Bolding of Georgia, and Lorraine (Clifford) Gaston of Cleveland, Ohio;  three sons, Greg Wilson of Cincinnati, Ohio, Timothy (Cindy) Malone of Cleveland, Ohio, and Clyde E. Wilson of Cleveland, Ohio;  one sister, Corean McIntosh of Cleveland, Ohio;  one brother, Chuck (Bessie) Wilson of Chicago, Illinois;  seventeen grandchildren;  five great-grandchildren;  two nieces, Teresa Black and Sharietta Black of Cleveland, Ohio;  one nephew, Johnny (Fracita) Black;  three special friends - Betty Malone, Linda Harris, and Lucy Scott;  and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends.

 

Helen D. Wilson (April 18, 1931 - July 5, 2004)

Helen D. Wilson was born on April 18, 1931 to Jeriesha Dixon in Atlanta, Georgia.  She gave herself to Christ at an early age and came to Cleveland, Ohio at the age of 14.  Helen was united in holy matrimony on August 3, 1945 to Benny Lee Walker.  To their union, two children were born - JoAnne and Elaine.  Helen and Benny were divorced in 1955.  She united again, on September 30, 1967, to R.J. Wilson.  He preceded her in death in 1989.  After an extended illness, Helen departed this life peacefully on July 5, 2004 at 9:30 a.m.  Helen's sister, Juanita Towns, preceded her in death in January 2003.  She leaves to mourn her passing and to cherish her memory, two daughters, JoAnne Brown (William) Crosby of Cleveland, Ohio, and Elaine (Kenneth) McDaniel of Shaker Heights, Ohio;  three sisters, Annie Pearl Chapman of Cleveland, Ohio, Alice Horton of Atlanta, Georgia and Jeanie Malone of Columbus, Ohio;  five grandchildren, Sindy, Anthony, Robert, Kenneth, Jr. and Mark;  nine great-grandchildren;  and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

 

Roosevelt Wimbley (June 24, 1919 - August 15, 2007)

Mr. Roosevelt Wimbley was born June 24, 1919 in McGehee, Arkansas to Tom and Bertha Wimbley.  He received his elementary education at Grand Elementary School in Arkansas.  Roosevelt moved to Cleveland, Ohio when he was just a young man.  After being in Cleveland Ohio for some time he met his future sister-in-law, Katherine Calhoun who later introduced him to his loving wife, Lillian.  On May 28, 1968 Roosevelt and Lillian were wed in holy matrimony and raised seven children.  He retired from Elwell-Parker as a certified (Class A) Industrial Truck Operator at the age of 65 years old.  Roosevelt loved to cook good “Soul Food” and some of the family favorites were his fried chicken, deep dish cornbread and rich pound cakes.  He also had a love for Blues and Jazz Music.  He was a sharp dresser; he loved suits and had to complete his attire with Stacy-Adams shoes!  Roosevelt departed this life on Wednesday, August 15, 2007 peacefully in his sleep.  He will be remembered for his loving ways good sense of humor and caring heart.  He is preceded in death by his parents.  Roosevelt leaves to cherish his memories while mourning his passing wife, Mrs. Lillian Wimbley; three sons, Albert Wilcox of Cleveland, Ohio, Leon Wilcox of Las Vegas, NV and Wayne Wilcox of Cleveland, Ohio, one daughter, Debra Wimbley-Smith of Mayfield Heights, Ohio; three step-children Eddie Wilcox of Cleveland, Ohio, Alfred Wilcox of Garfield Heights, Ohio and Lucinda Wilcox of Cleveland, Ohio; one brother Tommy Wimbley of St. Louis, Mo.; one sister Josephine Harris of Oakland Park, Kansas; sixteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and host of friends and relatives.

 

Rosemary Windle (November 29, 1931 - March 16, 2008)

 

Nelda Withers-Bentley (December 14, 1971 - March 16, 2008)

Nelda M. Withers-Bentley was born on December 14, 1971 in Cleveland, Ohio to Robert and Annie (nee McCurry) Withers. She accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of St. John AME Church where she praised the Lord.  Nelda was educated in the Cleveland Public School System. She attended the Cleveland School of the Arts where she was well known for dancing. During her youth, she participated in drill team dancing and in the Cleveland Ballet. She later graduated from Jane Addams Business Career Center in 1990 where she had majored in Data Processing.  She later wanted to turn her hobby of doing hair into a profession so she enrolled at Charmayne/Vogue Beauty School. After graduating, she worked at La Chic Beauty Salon for four years. She then decided to become an owner of Colour Me Beautiful Hair and Nail Salon where she worked diligently and was dedicated to her customers. Her love for dancing continued at the salon where it would be no surprise to see her break out into a Morris Day or Michael Jackson dance routine!  On September 6, 1997, Nelda married Vernon Bentley Jr. To their union, two beautiful children, that she loved wholeheartedly, were born - Alexis and Dar’Jon Bentley.  Nelda loved to take her children to Chuck E. Cheese’s. She also loved shopping as well as her travels to Las Vegas and Niagara Falls. She was a caring and dependable person who always had an upbeat and positive way about her.  On Sunday, March 16, 2008, Nelda joined her father, Robert, in eternal rest and peace with the Lord.  Those left to mourn and to cherish beautiful memories include her loving family: children, Alexis and Dar’Jon Bentley; mother, Annie Withers; brother, Robert Withers, Jr.; sisters, Michelle Withers and Leslie Withers-Brashers; brother-in-law, Ricardo Brashers; niece, Tishuana Withers; nephew, Chauncey Brashers; dear friends, Vernon Bentley, Jr. ("Booney"), Andrea (Nadine) and Jipp (Germaine) Gray; as well as a host of other loving relatives and friends.

 

Carl Anthony Woodard (December 21, 1985 - January 31, 2007)

Carl Anthony Woodard was born on December 21, 1985 in Cleveland) Ohio. He was the first child born to Nikita Woodard and Anthony Carl Maddox. Mr. David Thompson Sr. helped raised Carl. Carl was educated in the Cleveland Public School System. He was baptized on July 25, 2002 at the African Methodist Episcopal Church under the leadership of Rev. Arthur E. Doctor. Although Rev. Doctor relocated to another city and Carl did not currently have a church home, he had a personal relationship with the Lord. Carl was loved by so many because he had a heart of gold. He was a kind, generous, thoughtful, respectful, and hardworking young man with a lot of pride. Anyone who knew him would say Carl was a genuine person.  Carl had a long fought battle with Sickle-cell Anemia however; he did not fight it alone. He knew that his family and friends was always there with him, but most of all he knew God was carrying his footsteps. He suffered with Sickle-cell Anemia for twenty-one years. Early Thursday morning God dispatched an angle to come and remove Carl from all his pain and suffering. Even though he fought as long as he was allowed to he never used his sickness as an escape for enjoying life. Carl was sleeping so peacefully when we arrived at the hospital.  We noticed that there was no more life in him because we could no longer hear his loud snoring. Oh how we laughed, cried and told stories but most of all we prayed and thanked God for allowing us to have him for twenty-one years. Carl loved to make people laugh and he enjoyed spending time with his family as well as his friends. One of Carl’s favorite words was “chillin, chillin”. Carl also enjoyed dancing. As we remember Carl please know that he is only a shell and his soul has gone on to rest. When the gates swing open your love ones are there waiting to welcome you home.  He is survived by his loving parents: Nikita and David Thompson Sr. of Euclid, Ohio; Mr. Anthony Carl Maddox of Marion, Ohio; One grandfather: Willie Woodard of Chicago, 11 .One niece: Ki ‘Andra Woodard, Four sisters: Markita Woodard, Deidre, DeAndrea Thompson all of Euclid, Ohio; Lil-Leah Tolbert of Clevelaru Ohio.; Three brothers: David Thompson Jr, DeAn gelo and DeAndre all of Euclid, Ohio.; Four Aunts: Shanlanda Davis of Cleveland, Ohio; Debra and Angela of Euclid, Ohio., and JoAnn of Caljfornia. Three Uncles: Timothy (Janice), Milton and Calvin Thompson all of Cleveland, Ohio; Four Great Aunts: A precious aunt who he called” Grandma” Pearline R. White of Euclid, Ohio, Verna Davis of Atlanta GA., Susan Maiten and Berita (Joe) of Greenville Ms; Three great uncles: Talmadge (Evonne) Davis Jr. and Joe Ira (Linda) Davis both of Cleveland, Ms., Mr. Keith M. Davis of Newport News, Va.; One great great aunt Ethel Williams of Cleveland, Ms., One great great uncle Theodore (Annie Rose) Davis of Chicago, IL Carl had a very close family connection to Mr. Terry 0. (Tressa) Shields of West Palm Fl; Mr Carlo 0. Shields of Tennessee; Oudia Shields of Euclid, Ohio; Capucine Shields and Tracy S. Davis of Cleveland, Ohio.  Carl always loved to hang around his precious cousins who he loved to be around: Felicia Haynesworth, Keith, Oudia Jr., Rebecca, LaToya, LaTash and Modesty Shields, Terry, Ah-Zhanee,Nichell, Ayahna and Lawrence Davis all of Cleveland, Ohio and Stacy S. (Michael) James of Columbia South Carolina who Carl admired, respected and treasured. Lavoris Kirnbrough better known as Little Ma was like a nanny to Carl. Also, a very special love one that was dear in his life Ms. Stephanie Harris of Cleveland, Ohio, and a host of relatives and friends.

 

Odell Woods (December 19, 1922 - March 10, 2006)

Odell Woods was born on December 19, 1922 in Crockett County, Tennessee to the union of Louis and Elzira (nee Hamilton) Woods.  "Woodie", as he was affectionately known, was raised and educated in Tennessee and, at an early age, accepted Christ into his life.  On February 4, 1943, Woodie entered the U.S. Army where he served in World War II.  During his tour of duty he received an American Theater Ribbon as well as World War II Victory and Good Conduct Medals.  On February 15, 1946, he was Honorably Discharged.  After leaving the service, Woodie moved to Dayton, Ohio where he went to work at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.  While there, he met, and ultimately married, the former Carrie Hunter.  To this union three children were born.  The family later moved to Cleveland, Ohio where Woodie gained employment with the General Motors Chevrolet Parma Plant.  On June 30, 1981, after thirty years of devoted service, Woodie retired from his job as a Transmission Operator at General Motors.   Woodie was a quiet, laid-back and reserved man.  In addition to the love for his family, he also loved working on cars.  When he wasn't working at General Motors he could often be found working on cars in his own garage.  He also liked wrestling and he enjoyed working around his yard and being "Mr. Fix It" around the house.  On Friday, March 10, 2006, after a period of illness, Woodie departed this life.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Elzira Woods;  a son, Barry Woods;  a daughter, Carol Douglas;  a grandson, Alan Douglas;  two brothers, T.O. Woods and Jimmie D. Woods;  as well as by two sisters, Coachman Office and Allien Williams.  Those left to mourn and to cherish his memories include his loving wife of more than fifty years, Carrie;  one daughter, Denise Woods;  siblings, Blanche Hicks and Louis "L.W." Woods, both of Tennessee;  two grandchildren, Krystle Woods and Glynnisha Smith;  two great-grandchildren, Precious Johnson and Ariana Taylor;  a devoted nephew, Donal Hicks;  other loving relatives and friends.

 

Elbert B. Wright (May 5, 1913 - April 17, 2004)

Elder Elbert B. Wright, who was born on May 5, 1913 in Natchez, Mississippi, was one of thirteen (13) children born to the union of Handy Sr. and Mary Wright.  Elder Wright, who attended the Natchez, Mississippi public schools, confessed Christ at an early and was baptized at Tates Magnolia Baptist Church.  Until his health failed, he was a faithful member of Mount Sinai Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio where he served as an Elder.  Elder Wright met and fell in love with Gladys Payne and they married on January 8, 1938.  Their union was blessed with two sons, Robert and Charles.  After working as a foreman for Emerson Construction Co. for many years, Elder Wright retired at the age of sixty-five (65).  Elder Wright is preceded in death by his loving wife Gladys and beloved son Robert.  He leaves to cherish his memory son Charles, daughter-in-law Nancy, their two sons, Anthony and Andre, all of Grant's Pass, Oregon; Robert's two children, Chris and Pam; and a host of other relatives and friends.

 

Lucy Bell Wright (November 25, 1914 - March 22, 2005)

Lucy Bell Wright was born on November 25, 1914 in Lexington, Mississippi to the union of the late Ambrose and Arista (Crockett) Gwin, Sr.. She was the youngest surviving child of eight brothers and sisters who have preceded her in death.  Lucy confessed Christ as a youth and was a member of Newport Baptist Church of Lexington, Mississippi.  Lucy was united in matrimony to Wilbourn Wright of Schlater, Mississippi on December 14, 1943, who preceded her in death on March 10, 1987. The family relocated to Cleveland, Ohio in 1943 and united with Mt. Nebo Baptist Church under the Pastorate of the late Reverend Hill.  Lucy was a faithful, active, supportive member of Mt. Nebo for more than 50 years.  Most notably she was a Church Nurse, participated on the Mother’s Board, and on the now defunct Kings and Queens Club.  Lucy retired from Ohio Garment in the late 70’s, and truly enjoyed her golden years. Whether you knew her as “Aunt Sis”, “Lil’ Ain’nee”, “Lucy B.”, “Miss. Lucy”, “Sister Wright”, “Gaga” or “Mom” you are a witness to the fact that she never met a stranger. She departed this life on March 22nd at Kethley House in Cleveland, Ohio, and has joined her parents, siblings Almeda, Humphrey, Fred, Ambrose Jr., Clyde, Cornelius, Baby Alex, as well as a host of other family and friends in Heaven.  She leaves to cherish her memories a loving and devoted daughter, Dessie; supportive son-in-law Willie; three granddaughters, Patricia Callahan, Laurie Murphy, and Dr. Angela (Holger Amort) Murphy; great-granddaughter, Carmen Callahan; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, play-daughters and -sons, and friends.
