Sabra P. Baker was born on August 15,
1945, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the third child to the union of
Marvin Neil Baker and Agnes Lucille Baker. She was reared a
Christian, and at an early age accepted Jesus Christ as her personal
savior. She was baptized at the St. John Baptist Church in
Chattanooga where she had her fellowship in Christ for many years.
Sabra was educated in Chattanooga Public Schools and attended the
Howard High School, where she met Maurice Chappell, her high school
sweetheart and years later, her husband.
She was a young woman full life, love
and wonder. She loved to spend time with family, listen to music,
laugh and play practical jokes. Before moving to Cleveland, she
bore a son, Tony. A few years later she bore a daughter, Katrina,
from her relationship with Maurice. In 1965, Sabra moved to
Cleveland with her family and became a member of The House of God
Church. She later bore a daughter, Sharon (“Shay”). Sabra had a
flair for fashion and, to boot, a passion for styling hair. In
pursuit of her desire to be a certified hair stylist, she attended
the Erma Lee Beauty and Barber College, where she graduated in 1973;
she went on to have a successful career from which to help support
her three children for more than 35 years. Sabra was a great cook
and had many “signature” dishes, including potato salad, dressing
and neck bones. In 1993, Sabra and Maurice rekindled their
friendship and on August 12, 1994, they were united in holy
matrimony. One year later, in August 1995, the two joined in the
fellowship at Blessed Hope Missionary Baptist Church, where Rev.
Johnny F. Twymon is Pastor. Before her illness prevented her from
attending church on a regular basis, Sabra was an active member,
serving as a Deaconess and a member of the Gospel Chorus. After a
long illness, Sabra departed life on this side of Glory quietly and
peacefully on Monday, February 15, 2010.
Preceding Sabra in death are her parents
Marvin Neil Baker and Agnes Lucille Baker and brother James Baker.
